Yet teams somehow did it for decades. :lol Maybe the teams and players of today should start concentrating on defensive fundamentals as well as playing proper team D. Good team defense (helping, rotating on picks etc.) is much more impressive to me than zone defense, and takes much more skill imo. Players today just don't wanna work. :p

The game has changed since then. The players have gotten bigger and faster, but at the same time they can't shoot as well (strange how the best shooters are always the short guys who can't jump). It makes perfect sense to use a zone these days. I agree they could use more fundamentals, but you can make almost any system work if the team plays together. That is getting harder and harder to do with the focus the NBA places on individuals and the huge turnover on rosters.

Stern wanted a "stars" league, started it with Magic and Bird, then there was no one for the entire 90s until Kobe and Shaq starting winning :D, and these days he has no one left to replace them. Hope he is replaced by someone who puts more empahsis on the team.

Yeah, they did it for decades when zone defense was BANNED. And you know what? For those decades scoring was in the 110s and FG% was in the 50s%. So what is your point, exactly?

I disagree that players have gotten faster on average. Bigger, yes, but I was watching the '83 Finals between the Lakers and (I think) the Sixers, and I said to myself "wow, these guys are noticeably faster than most players today"; I recall saying the same thing when I watched some college games on ESPN Classic from like '86. I think if most people watched the games, they'd see that general speed has stayed roughly the same, with the few exceptions (still, I don't think that guys like Kobe, TMac, and Garnett are significantly-- if at all-- faster than Jordan, Drexler, and Olajuwon).


But this is debatable, obviously-- I'm just giving you my honest impressions from when I was watching those games. Those guys were quite fast.

On a side note, WHY would they choose to show games that EVERYBODY has seen dozens of times over? I'd prefer less frequently aired games to be shown, such as any games from any Bulls-Knicks, Bulls-Cavs, or Bulls-Pistons series....so I could get them on tape. :D

And you just have to fight aggresively though the picks and switch EVERYTHING. This team is young and athletic and I think they can do that...


Rudy is still coaching as if he has Hakeem. One guy with the ball and everyone else on the perimeter. LAME!!! I say post Lamar up more, have the guys MOVE without the ball and stop the LAZY "kickout for three" with 15 secs left on the 24!!!

As for their defense, his lack of play-calling shouldn't affect that. The team just needs to give more effort and there needs to be some accountability. If you're constantly getting taken off the dribble, you SIT!!! If you rotate late, you SIT!!! Oh and get rid of the 2-3 against good-shooting teams!!! Good grief :lol

I really doubt that Rudy is telling the Lakers waste 20 seconds on the shot clock so that Kobe can get the ball 6 feet behind the 3 point line where he has to dribble around 2 guys to force a bad shot. I am not sure what the fuck is going on with their offense right now and I don't know if that is Rudy's fault, that the players just suck, or that Kobe is being a retard.

The Lakers in general don't have good energy on defense for the entire game, they all (including Kobe) take quite a few plays off and they don't move together at all on defense or offense. I can't be too harsh on them though, it is a entirely new roster and it might take them more time to gel and get on the same page.

This is something I noticed against the Mavs the other night. Sometimes it seemed like they were just going through the motions (which is also a sign of a young team). And their transition defense was absolutely atrocious. The Mavs didn't even have to be on a turnover-induced fast-break, all they had to do was push the ball up the court and they got an easy 2 practically every time.
