Ringing in the New Year in the Land of the Extreme, Chavo Guerrero will kick-off the first ECW on Sci Fi of 2008 and explain his attack on CM Punk two weeks ago. With the ECW Champion in the buiding, one might expect that Chavo's verbal address could turn into face-to-face confrontation between these newound rivals. What will transpire? How will Punk commence his 2008 after the end of his 2007 was spoiled by Guerrero?

ECW Champion CM Punk’s title might as well be a golden target in the Land of the Extreme. As if Big Daddy V and Mark Henry didn’t add up to a big enough problem for the champion, Chavo Guerrero is now making efforts to knock Punk off of the pinnacle point in ECW. Thanks to United States Champion Montel Vontavious Porter making room for him, Guerrero made sure the Straightedge Superstar wouldn’t go to bed without a headache. What further measures will this hungry competitor take to crash CM Punk’s party?

WWE Tag Team Champions The Miz & John Morrison’s luck may have run out. After weeks of success in combining their efforts, the duo fell to Shannon Moore & Jimmy Wang Yang on ECW on Sci Fi. Can they recover and get past their differences to keep hold of the gold or are their days as champions numbered?

Also on ECW, Shelton Benjamin tore through questionable competition – a man taking part in his first match. Is there something out there that can bring him down or is the self-proclaimed “Gold Standard” right when he claims there is no stopping him?

Find out the answers to all of these questions and more on the next ECW on Sci Fi, Tuesday at 10/9 CT. Also, be sure to catch ECW in its entirety every week on WWE.com, available from Wednesday to the following Monday afternoon.

As time winds down on 2007, the first SmackDown of the New Year will see Superstars competing in a Beat the Clock Challenge, as announced by General Manager Vickie Guerrero. Who will participate and try to earn a title opportunity at Edge and the World Heavyweight Championship at Royal Rumble? Will The Animal’s rage be unleashed on the competition? Will The Phenom make the competition rest in peace? Or will another Superstar be up to the challenge – Finlay? MVP? Rey Mysterio? The Great Khali? Will the Rated-R Superstar, his lover Vickie and his “Edge-heads” Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder find a way to keep the gold in Edge’s hands?

What will 2008 hold for the Superstars of SmackDown? There is only one way to find out, and that is to tune in each and every Friday on The CW Network to Friday Night SmackDown.

What happened to Austin Creed in TNA?

I guess Killings leaving ended his chances of a debut?

And while I'm just putting things out there for discussion...........

When the hell is Matt Morgan going to debut? The waiting is getting ridiculous.

Yes! I was there to watch Layla in person.

A quick question for you all: I've been out of the loop in terms of the recent WWE DVD releases (anything post 'Mania 23) and so what should I be getting? I'm in the UK by the way so the likes of the HBK DVD and the Raw XV Set aren't out here yet.

I've got my eye on the Ladder Match set (as I love a good spotfest) but I'm not sure what else I should be picking up.

Be warned with the ladder match DVD.

Spread it out a LOT!

Ladder matches are awesome because you see them maybe 3-4 times a year.

But watching them in any straight number just causes match fatigue as you begin to see a lot of spots setup and logic that doesn't work.

I made it through the first two disc in like a week and still can't bring myself to finish the 3rd. (Helps that my friends have had it since like a week after it came out :lol )

Has anyone bought the RAW XV DVD? I couldn't find it when I went to Target/Circuit City last week. Hoping to find when go this week.

yeah Raw averages around a 3.5-3.8, TNA does 1.8-2.0. Only one TNA does better is ECW but I pretty sure a rerun of spongebob does better then ECW.

TNA does a 1.1, every time. ECW gets 1.3-1.5, Smackdown does 2.8-3.2, RAW does 3.5-3.8 but should be picking up soon because Football is over and Wrestlemania is starting.

Royal Rumble will be in HD???? Crap, I hope DirecTV DOESN'T carry it. My wife is getting pissed on PPVs, and if RR is in HD on DirecTV there's no way I'm going to be able to avoid it.

Does WWE only have one live production crew? If so, that could be good news for all other WWE shows being that all three are on HD networks (USA, Sci-Fi and CW)

I think.. well I know that Smackdown will be making the switch to HD (maybe first?) because of the CW. Raw will soon go that direction as well. I don't know if ECW will need it but eh.

I think Smackdown's ratings shouldn't be included. If I remember correctly, network ratings and cable ratings are on a different scale. Could be completely mistaken though.

That's why I was asking about production crews. The second that Smackdown goes HD, technically so does ECW (even if it's not being aired). They then just have to uplink the HD signal to Sci-Fi. And if there is only one live production crew, that would mean that RAW is HD ready also just needing to transmit to USA (using likely the same uplink satellite as Sci-Fi). See where I'm going?

Who knows, but something tells me as long as there is only one production unit (which given matching location bookings leads me to believe it's possible) that the light-up to HD on all three shows will be close together. Both Sci-Fi and USA are begging for HD content anyway they can.. If WWE has the ability, my guess is Universal will do what's needed to see it happen.

Smackdown and RAW have the same number of viewers. Smackdown also does really good in Hispanic ratings because of Rey.

What's the final word on the Raw XV DVD? I'm seriously contemplating it. But the price is throwing me off. I wouldn't think it'd have much stuff if it was only $20.

That was obvious the first time he fought, zero ability.
alas "wrestling" as it's been for the past 30 years is not only about technical ability and talent but also charisma and promos. for every single one of you that complains about cena, I point to his recent reign and all of his promos and then say "What do we have at this very second?" RAW has had Santino and that's about it. Carlito hasn't been doing spots since his disagreements with WWE started, Orton is miserable. HHH and HBK are doing the same spots they have been for 10 years. Jericho has been doing ok since he came back, but before JBL has had no one to promo with.

The bottom line is that the best promos we've had in recent years, and consequently some of the more memorable matches as a result, are like the Edge/HHH/Cena three way era, and Cena/HBK.

I won't defend Cena as a great or even really good technical wrestler... but he can work a mic and work in the ring even if he's not the best. IMHO that's more than you can say about most of the current roster among all three shows.

Hate on Cena all you want, but his spot on the Tribute to the Troops special, combined with the fact that he FU'ed Vince with a torn pectoral is exactly WHY the majority of fans like him. I promise you his return late this year will be one of the highest viewings for a WWE event in many years.

I agree, and I never said I didn't like him.

Much like The Rock, he is a fantastic showman. My criticism was purely technical.

When is Cena set to return?
late this year. They said the injury would keep him out 9-12 months. That would mean the earliest he could come back would be july-october.

Opus Angelorum said:
Apparently around April, May or June.
that seems really early. WWE basically officially said he has absolutely no chance of making Wrestlemania and is unlikely for Summerslam. I realize your guess doesn't change that, but from the sounds of it it sure sounded like August or September would be when he's back.

I'm assuming he may return to do spots initially (just like the tribute show), and return to action later. I guess it will depend on ratings.

Hey, not a wrasslin fan , both my sons are though and they were watching wrestling on New Years Eve. Well , I guy I remember from the 80's "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan gets into the ring looking like he is in his mid to late 50s. It's a triumphant return , the crowd goes bananas for him , he has the Stars and Striipes and his 2x4 and...he got totally crushed in under 40 seconds buy this dude name Umaga (sp?)

The crowd looked deflated and he looked horrible it was a shame. What the hell was he doing in the ring anyway ?

Sent to die.

He is still seen as a fan favourite (the whole USA thing helps), personally I think he should just retire completely.

Chris Masters is due back as well soon, I like him.

O_O

umm

Didn't Masters get fired? He was on Fight Network radio doing an interview after he got canned saying he was going to do some indy shows for a while.

and Cena > all of you

If you watch his DVD, his wrestling skills are there but due to the WWE's style of wrestling, he really can't use it. His gimmick is a brawler much like post-broken neck Austin. He had a great match with Umaga at Royal Rumble last year.

McMahon-HHH beef.

Yeah he did a bit if IGF, but it's rumoured that he will return to the WWE in 08.

He was 'sacked' before by the way for the same offence (drug abuse), so the precedent has been set.

How so, are you saying HHH would have wanted to win?

no no no no.

HHH is the new Stone Cold

Regal did that so HHH wouldn't win and get in the rumble. Pleasing McMahon in the process.

Did you not see HHH and Flair backstage where HHH said it'd be his honor to retire Flair, or something like that?

The local wrestling promotion in my area, IZW, brought in Terry Funk, Jerry Lawler and Hacksaw Jim Duggan last year for one of their big shows. I was lucky enough to schedule interviews with all three wrestlers before the show for an article I was writing for the newspaper. Duggan is a completely different guy than you would think. He's very serious, very quiet and has a gruff voice. He said the reason he still wrestles is because he needs the money and he loves the sport. When I talked to him, he wasn't sure when he was going to retire, but it wouldn't be soon. It's a shame though. He came out and put on a hell of a match here. But then I see him on Raw and he does those moronic promos: "HOOOOO! SIIIIII! HOOOOO!" and then jobs to guys like Umaga. I feel bad for him. His career is almost as low as when he was a janitor for the powers that be a.k.a. Vince Russo in WCW.

Opus Angelorum said:
I took the angle that retiring Flair would have made him much happier?

Vince has had it in for HHH since the 15th anniversary show. The whole catch to it was JR pointing out that Regal hit Flair in plain view of the ref making sure Flair got a DQ. I'm guessing this leads to a Regal/HHH match for Raw Roulette or Royal Rumble.

Flair will have someone new to chop next week...see Smackdown for details.

Hockey Legend "The Great One" Wayne Gretzky is featured in an interview for the Swedish newspaper Expressen that was published on Sunday. In a photo enclosed in the article you can see Gretzky wearing a shirt showcasing the WrestleMania logo and the slogan "Destruction in The Desert," which would indicate that Wrestlemania 2010 will be held in Phoenix, Arizona. Gretzky has ties to the Phoenix area as he is currently the part-owner and head coach of the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes.

Here's a link to the article showing Gretzky wearing the WM 2010 Jersey

Here's another update on WWE HD:

If you are excited about WWE RAW airing in High Definition, it looks like you are going to have to wait longer than this coming Monday. According to Mike Johnson the original plan was for RAW to launch in HD alongside the USA Network, however, it has since been pushed back several weeks. It is likely that WWE RAW will debut in HD the day after the Royal Rumble pay-per-view which is set to be the first WWE pay-per-view broadcast in High Definition.
