Remember, 5 years ago, the genius crew from Rockstar that compressed the entire 2 discs of RE2 on the even more limiting cart size of the N64, even managed to pump out a high-res mode.

Angel Studios (not of Rock * at the time)

Of course, if was compressed on the PSX version. Do you know how many megabytes per second it'd take on that CD without any compression? Hell, the CD drive couldn't transfer it quickly enough!

FF7 video was compressed, anyone who says otherwise has no idea what "compressed" means. There are many forms of video compression and it's entirely possible that they could be remastered now and be of smaller size due to several facts (more advanced codecs, smaller resolution, etc) but that doesn't mean there was almost an hour of uncompressed video in FF7 because that's just dumbspeak. Oh and whoever mentioned 7zip, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhAhAhAHAHAHAA. That's not the kind of compression you should be talking about when it comes to videos and media. :P

All of this is not taking into account the fact that a FFVII port on the DS is retarded to start with, as is any other port of ten-year old games. It's crap like that that's going to kill the DS in the long run.

also, people may not be thinking of this too much, but if there were a way to hot-swap the ds games out while you were playing, there is no reason why there couldn't be multi-card games for the DS, if they are as cheap to produce as rumoured. All it would have to do is essentially the same thing as the PS FFVII cd's, keep the basic game data the same on both/all cards, and have the "extra" required stuff card-dependent. each would have to have it's own save ram, and that may get confusing, but i don't see why this would be impossible.
The reason multi-disc games were necessary was because the disc was a fixed size. If you wanted more space, you needed more discs. With a cart/card they can just put more on the inside, save the bother of making multiple cart casings, and not have the inefficient use of space of having much of the data be the same from cart to cart. Were it possible, one 1500 MB FF VII disc surely would've been a better choice than three 650 MB discs.

Didn't the PS1's processor have an MDEC decoder built into it? MDEC IIRC was some kind of MPEG compression. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. I don't know why Square would put uncompressed video on the CD when the PS1 could decode in hardware. Also, if it's not compressed, then it had gobs of artifacting for nothing. The FMV in FF7 was of much crappier quality compared to that of their other PS1 games like FF8 and Vagrant Story. PEACE.
Yeah, totally uncompressed video would take ungodly amounts of space. PS1 video was compressed, just extremely inefficiently compared to anything in common use today. Something like 300 kilobytes per second.

To be fair, he wasn't. Since video and still images were possible to calculate in different ways, we were talking about the remaining 100+ MB of files.

Agreed. Now, spinoff Final Fantasy VII: Tifa Contact, that's completely different.

I hate to say this, but I think ports are essential to a handheld's success. They have their own audience, they're cheaper to make and can bring in large amounts of dollars.

Ports alone, not necessarily bad. But porting standard games to an experimental 2-screen/touch/mic system makes less sense than normal and should be done even less.

Truth is a good portion of handheld games (DS and PSP) will be recycled hand me downs from console games. Not many developers have the time or want to spend the money on portable games, especailly since PS3/Xenon/Revolution projects are likely to cost even more than current generation stuff. It may also surprise you, but there still are a lot of people who haven't played a lot of these big games.

At the end of the day it'd be great to have a portable version of FF7 to carry around with you, maybe with some enhanced graphics/redone cut sequences.

They could do some cool stuff. The second screen could be touch interface to scroll through things like Materia/Limit Breakers or it could display the other characters in your party. I hate it when they just disapeer into the main character.

Touch control could be used in battles.

They could have touch mini-games also in that casino-like area in FF7.

A portable FF VII with enhanced graphics would be nice, but better and more easily done on PSP/GBMA. However you make an interesting point about how touch features could be added in. Guess we'll see what sorts of things they cook up for FF III?

I don't think they'd have to really upgrade the backgrounds or anything. Just redo the character models, since they look pretty rough these days.

Square seems hesistant to remake FF7 for whatever reason, my guess is it would cost a lot of money to do it, on the DS, they could just get away with a basic upgrade of it. Add some touch mini-games maybe based around that casino-like area in FF7 (I can't remember the name).

I certainly wouldn't mind a full blown remake on PSP or GBN, but I'd be more than happy with a DS version as well.

Here's some food for thought.

Square will make games for the DS
They will include video cinematics
They will be RPGs

Whether it is FFVII or not is not so important. Although SquareEnix seems more comfortable supporting the DS at this point in time so their next big portable game could be headed to the DS.

Right I see you're referring to the announcement of FFVII Crisis Core on the DS...... oh wait no that's on the PSP.

But that's totally not coming out until like 2029 and also DS is getting FFVII: Before Crisis! That's right, I went the cellphone route!

Was this confirmed or are you just kidding around? I only remember little tidbits of wireless mentionings back in August during the event, and it was mostly twisted out of speculation from fans and Gamespot. I'd love to be wrong though.

Can any Japan GAFfers let us know whether the PSP is readily available on store shelves there? Because calling the PSP a bomb is utterly ridiculous if it's sold out.

its still apparently sold out, my friend has been looking for one for me since launch, and still hasnt gotten one.

if anyone knows any small stores in tokyo with them in stock, please pm me :)

No, it's not confirmed.

But Dear God, I hope I'm wrong. I don't want no more freakin' remakes or spin-offs for DS (or PSP, for that matter).

Amir0x, your new avatar is demonic. It's just going to make all the upcoming PSP vs DS nonsense battles here on the board bloodier and bloodier by the minute. :lol

As it was revealed in the other thread, GT4's #2 status is because a few stores broke the release date. The games actual release was the 28th and its reported to have sold over 300k on the 28th.

Im just sitting here drunk, waiting for the day that I can plainly state that I saw the DS's popularity forming from afar. Wait, that's today? :)

By the time the stocks are high enough, it will be too late (as in this gen will already be counted for the DS)

By the time the stocks are corrected, Jump Super Stars will release, pushing DS even more ahead.

By the time next christmas rolls around, Pokemon Diamond and Pearl will release, finishing it all.

Just watch.

I've been right so far, anyway :)

when the stocks are high enough each and every DS owner will sell their DS to get a PSP.

(wait for 10 threads a day about selling DS to get PSP in 2005) :lol
