Oh shit it's out this week huh?! I know I'm spewing a lot of hate (most of it is in jest) but I'm really excited for this album. It's a hov album.

wow Rick Rubin didn't even do anything on this album

In the many commercials teasing Jay-Z’s forthcoming Magna Carta Holy Grail album, Jay is surrounded by a supergroup of his longtime collaborators—Swizz Beatz, Pharrell Williams, Timbaland—as he plays new music and explains the songs. Also seen in the snippet videos is the legendary Rick Rubin, founder of Def Jam Records and producer of LL Cool J’s Radio, The Beastie Boys’ Licensed To Ill and most recently, Kanye West’s Yeezus. While Rubin and Jay have had a working relationship since their collaborative “99 Problems”—a single from Jay’s Black Album —according to a spokesperson for Rubin, he was reportedly not involved in the making of Magna Carta, but was rather merely in town when they shot the commercials, thus his presence in them.

When we recently caught up with Rick over the phone, he explained: “The point of me being in the commercials was that he was filming a documentary and he asked me—I imagine he’s just comfortable talking to me—to come listen to the songs with him and just talk about the songs. Just listen to it and talk about it, and that’s what we did. It was fun.” He went on to divulge what he initially thought of Magna Carta, saying, “I liked what I heard, but it was a little difficult—after just coming from the Kanye sessions—to listen to Jay’s album, because they’re so different. I was in a very alternative and progressive headspace, and Jay’s record is a more traditional hip-hop record.”

For more with Rick, check back with us tomorrow for an in-depth interview about his contributions to albums by Run-D.M.C., Public Enemy and The Geto Boys.

low-key diss. calling it the same old shit.

Amazon Germany leaked the album cover (?)

Well, that sure is something.

Yeezus - artsy to back-packers with bookless backpacks.

Except it's not very deep conscious wise, so it's not much of a backpacker head thumper... And while MBDTF is "artsy", Yezus is bipolar.

Anyways, I hope Jay's delivery in Open Letter is a sign of things to come. Read the lyrics to most MCHG tracks, but it's hard deciphering flow without instrumental and all of the black bars in those bars.

In my honest opinion Jay-Z's ONLY disappointing album is BP3. I even prefer the Best of Both Worlds and Unfinished Business over them. There are still a couple of decent songs off BP3 but listening to the album as a whole (which I usually love to do) puts me off to listening to Jay-Z for weeks. It's just way too poppy. ugh. Terrible followup considering how incredibly awesome American Gangster was. And to all the Kingdom Come haters, I really like that album. It's very well rounded to me.

Blueprint 3 is easily the worst Jay album. It's the only one that's legit bad.

I'd actually put Kingdom Come over it and Life & Times Vol 3.

I guess Rick Rubin is a Yeezy stan too?

"A traditional rap album" is a diss now? I'd rather listen to traditional rap than stuff made for critics in a rushed and panicked fashion.

The worst albums are Kingdom Come, then Vol. 2. Blueprint 2 is hiding around there somewhere, too.

Bought an S4 today. Downloaded the app. No idea if I am one of the first million to get the free album.

Is there a way to tell? Or is the app going to be removed from the market after 1 million downloads?

If all you see in that cover is M C H G then this album isn't for you. Peer through the four windows and reflect on: your existence, earth, civilisation and camelus dromedarius specio.

Honestly I expect an album called Magna Carta Fucking Holy Grail to have some king shit/castle music esque album artwork. Throw some DONDA PYREX shit all over it, something.

So you want Jay to copy Kanye's style then?

Pls keep that lame hypebeast shit away from Jay albums.
