Jeff Grubb: It sounds like Sony has probably settled on a State of Play for June (rather than a Showcase)

It's a narrative, because you ignore the fact that Sony released a lot of games between 2020~2022.

Not true:

2020 through 2022 for Sony was great.

Much more than they did between 2013~2015, and without a doubt, with much more quality overall. That explain why they can't release games at the same cadence right now, but overall, compared with last gen, their output (quantity) is basically the same.

So "overall" they have had a good cadence of games until 2023? Well shit man....that's exactly what I've been saying.

They did release alot of games in 2013 alone on ps3. The only difference this time around is easy crossgen which was most of the games so far.

Corrected then. And the point I did make.....still stands.

2016 - The Last Guardian, (GenDesign), Uncharted 4,
2017 - Gran Tursimo Sport, (Sport game ignore as everyone does MLB), Gravity Rush 2, (killed Japan Studio), Horizon Zero Dawn, Knack 2, (Killed Japan Studio) Uncharted Lost Legacy (DLC),
2018 - God of War
There we go, Neogaf cuts edition.

Sony sucks, MS sucks even more, and I don't care about Nintendo. Maybe it's time for some new competent company to appear on the scene

Nintendo is much better because of there exclusives which stays exclusives. And none or very low focus on that live and gaas service.
Worst Playstation generation ever?
In terms of 1st and 2nd party game development, its the worse. Sony Asian game developers (Example Team Asobi, Shift up, and Kojima production) and Hero project are the bright side. For the hardware, Ps5 is a very good technology for its price. While sales is still tracking to be one of the best numbers in history.

Despite of Sony many blunders this gen especially with wasted game development due to live service and GAAS focus, and woke infestation, Sony PS patient and loyal fans are the one's saving them.

I wonder what remaster it will be this time. God of War 2018? Well after being burned by the last state of plays I can't care less. Probably death stranding 2 sop

Are you telling me that the month when Microsoft is having a showcase for xbox and Nintendo release their new console that Sony would be doing something in June?! This Grubb guy is a GENIUS!

What I'm expecting:
  1. Horizon MMO
  2. Marathon trailer
"Thanks for tuning in!"

What we'll actually get:
  1. The Last of Us Complete Edition trailer
  2. Horizon MMO trailer and Fortnte tie-in
  3. God of War 2018 Remastered
  4. Too-long Marathon squad gameplay trailer with bad banter
"New price increase for PS5 Pro! Buy now!"

Last year they got:

Remasters:
TLOU Part II

Remakes:
Until Dawn
Silent Hill 2 (console exclusive)

Sequels:
Helldivers 2
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (timed exclusive, still console exclusive)
MLB (multiplatform)
Destiny 2: The Final Shape (multiplatform)

New IPs:
Astrobot
Rise of the Ronin (timed exclusive and financed by them. still console exclusive to this day)
Stellar Blade (timed exclusive and financed by them. still console exclusive to this day)
Lego Horizon
Concord

They also got the GOTY award winning game as an exclusive title to their platform.

I will never understand how 2024 was a bad year as a PS player.

The conversation was about Sony first party studios.

The conversation was about Sony first party studios.
Which is a pointless conversation to be having, since Sony's first-party output has never been all about their in-house teams only.

It's the equivalent to solely focusing on discussing the first 45 minutes of a soccer match during which the rival team scored 1 goal, while conviniently ignoring the remaining 45 minutes in which the team turned around the match and ended up with a 3-1 victory.

100% agree. Ronin, Stellar Blade, Astro, HD2 are all really good to great games. But to be fair, a lot of people own a Playstation for their cutting edge and highly produced first party games, which wasn't present in 2024

During the PS4 era, Playstation would usually only release one AAA game a year, sometimes 2. Their cadence isn't too different this generation. The problem has been a lack of new IP and sequels that don't innovate very much on their predecessors.

The good news is that Playstation should have 4 new AAA IPs releasing in the next 2.5 years. Wolverine, Intergalactic, Saros, and Sony Santa Monica's new IP. They should end the generation really strong

It isn't pointless. Not when games from Sony's first party studios are the primary reasons why I own a PlayStation. Those are games that, 9 times out of 10, are absolutely kick ass games. When I think of Sony first party studios then I think of TLOU, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War, etc. Not Stellar Blade. Not Rise of the Ronin. So save your silly analogies. If you don't like my outlook on Sony first party then that's not my problem.

The in-house studios of today were the external partners of the past, replacing the in-house teams that are no more.

The context changes each generation, making any comparison apples-to-oranges like in nature.

PS shows have been very underwhelming basically the entire generation thus far, outside of the Sep 2020 Showcase where they got the Hogwarts Legacy reveal, because WB Games planned on going to e3 that year, buuuut Covid. That was epic.

But anyway, not expecting much from PS. Should of course be a great year for Nintendo, though. They always go big for the launch year of their new console.

I'm fully capable of looking at the first party studio output and deciding for myself. Thanks.

Try to remember guys, the cost of having a massive showcase is Sony totally blowing their load. We saw this in 2015-2016 where they got so excited about actually being on top for the first time in a while, that they spent the next five years releasing the lineup debuted at those E3 conferences.

I see why that is appealing, but think about the announcements we've gotten over the last year.

- Helldivers
- Astro
- Ghost of Yotei
- Saros
- Intergalactic.
- most of the deets on DS2.

That IS an E3 level showcase when you throw in some major 3rd party stuff.

I think this cadence over the last year is clearly a sign they are moving away from the huge showcases and want to have smaller State of Plays, or announce things at TGA/SGF. More beats throughout the year.

Then what's the difference between a Saros and a Returnal? A Spider-Man and a Wolverine? Knack and Sackboy? Concord started out externally but ended up as an in-house project, does that make it count more in your book than a Detroit?

Your whole angle of comparison is flawed: the difference between a Ghost of Tsushima and a Stellar Blade is not whether a team is in-house or external, but the investments that go into each individual title, based on the game concept, IP recognition, market conditions, target demographic, etc.

So, are you really fully capable to decide? Hmmmm...

First people said Xbox had no games.
Now they say Sony have no games.

Where are they, who is stealing all these games ? 🤔
Can't speak for xbox, but on the sony side they shifted hard into gambling on GAAS hoping that they could land a huge hit with a lower budget than would typically be required for a AAA single player game. As evident, it's not going too well for them.

Anyway, the 2023 and 2024 May events were held around 15 hours after the Sony Group Business Segment presentations those years. May be a coincidence, but the one this year is being held in mid June, so there's that.

Let's keep in mind that Jeff isnt 100% sure what it will be in June.

I think a Showcase to start showing games in the back half of the generation (announcents or otherwise) would be good for Sony.

i called this back in 2021 when they started skipping E3s. I knew they didnt have any enough content to do a big showcase every year.

its not a suprise that their only big showcase this gen has been the 2023 one where they showed like 5 CGi games and Spiderman 2. If it wasnt for insomniac, sony first party would be in shambles.

A lot of it is due to poor management by herman and Jimbo. Cancelling Days Gone 2 or rather rejecting its pitch in 2019 meant no game from bend in 2025. Forcing them to do GaaS then cancelling it 6 years later is also retarded. Had Bluepoint started on Demon Souls 2 in 2020, or another remake, it wouldve been ready for 2025. But no, another studios wasted on gaas trash.

But when 60% of your budget is going into GaaS, there isnt enough money left to give it to your other teams. The ones that made you successful. The ones that literally resurrected the Sony brand after the fuckups of the PS3 launch. I havent seen first party studios abandoned like this, ever.

i-worry-people-are-misunderstanding-sonys-plan-for-future-v0-i921qt30aacb1.jpg

YIKES!! 60% GAAS?!? That's just terrible business decision 🤮

- New Yotei Trailer
- The entire Bungie team on their knees looking at the camera with tearful eyes begging us to pre order Marathon (it's later revealed an ex-employee had stolen some eye drops for the team to use on this video)
- Saros Gameplay reveal
- Media Molecule presents some quirky new game that's going to bomb.
- 2 new Chinese souls likes and 4 new Chinese anime waifu gacha games
- The big finale is Horizon GaaS.

Can't wait!
You forgot one or two new remasters but this sounds spot on lol

Worst Playstation generation ever. My PS5 is basically. a 3rd party and PS4 player. And just barely. Luckily Switch (and soon switch 2) are keeping me too busy to care too much.

I dont know what I should be excited about from Sony when it comes their first party.

I'm more excited for 3rd party offering.

Every year I consider more strongly that this will be the last Gen I'll have bought a console. As we get further into the gen, I feel like that's the best choice. This gen has been awful.

You guys are still thinking that Sony is going to make a show announcing everything they got, all at once, years in advance just to keep some online fans clinged to the past hyped for a couple of weeks before they start complaining again? "pie_tears_joy:
That's not how marketing works today in the era of games being shadow dropped and 3-6 months long marketing cycles.
They will announce just the things that they feel they're ready to announce and that's it.

Not surprised, they have been lacking games since 2 years already
