Jessica Chobot: Stepping Into Daylight by Polygon

To be honest, you're making it easy

Please explain how wanting better written characters and not caring about ones gender/race somehow translates to women issues?

Empathy for another human being

Sure, what she went though is bad but that has nothing to do with the writing job. Jobs are not given out to people who need them the most but rather who is the most qualified.

Sure, what she went though is bad but that has nothing to do with the writing job. They're are plenty of struggling writers out their with experience.

Sure, having experience is one thing. Understanding the industry and videogames whilst also being able to write is another.

Then send their resumes to Zombie Studios? Or make a game studio yourself and hire them?

Do you take issue with so many indie studios writing their own game stories too? I'm sure most of them don't have writing credentials.

Exactly, at least she has a degree more related to the Fine Arts, rather than some indie tech wiz who only understands maths and tries to write one.

Zombie Studios can do what ever they please but I don't think it is a particularly offensive idea to have a dose of skepticism over someone with absolutely no writing experience.

Sure, having experience is one thing. Understanding the industry and videogames whilst also being able to write is another.

And having both is better.

I'll never forget her hijacking IGN's Nintendo podcast to talk about how Mass Effect 1 was the best game ever on their special Mario Galaxy launch podcast.

...funny how she later ended up in Mass Effect. One of the easily bought "journos" in the industry. Awful figure.

I enjoyed it because she lied about her game knowledge to get the job and Matt and bozon ripped into her for being awful. A lot of users called her out too and it didn't take long before ign moved her into simply a pretty face.

There's a video where they ask why she's qualified for the game writer job her answer is because she's watched scary movies and loves violence. I don't have high hopes for this one.

It said in the article she's pitched TV shows and is helped write a movie script. That puts her on par with a lot of 'game writers' already.

Pretty much. People can't fault her for taking the opportunities given to her. I don't know anybody who would say, "Ehh, maybe somebody else who worked harder for this job should get it". Its just how it is. You can look at most of the big name screenwriters in Hollywood( ex. Roberto Orci). Their stuff isn't any better than the guy sitting in his house writing. They just had the opportunity given to them, whether its through networking or whatever. That's what it is. Doesnt really matter how good you are if nobody gives you a chance.

To be fair, their games would probably be even better if they did find writers who actually know what they're doing instead of doing it themselves.

The only reason in my opinion. I'm surprised she still has work after that disaster.

the only reason?

Ok buddy. An optional side character that's at the bottom of your ship that you never have to talk to is why the game was such a piece of shit. or you could just completely ignore her, since you know, she's not even a minor character.

yep

Sure, but that is not indicative of good writing. In the article they say "Chobot is not a trained writer".

Look, I'm not saying the game is going to poorly written. I'm just being skeptical.

Automatically assuming that writing minority/female characters will somehow preclude well-written characters is problematic. That argument is basically imagining devs saying "Well, we have this really well written white male protagonist, but let's throw that out because society says we should have more women and minorities." The issue is that consideration of women and minorities is not given equally at the conception level. This problem also exists in real life employment. However, in this case Jessica Chobot was specifically asked to write up an outline which was then pitched to and picked up by Atlus-yet some people see her as being "unqualified" or "taking someone else's place."

Now I need a mopey piece on Hiphopgamer struggling to achieve his longlife dream making a song for a Medal of Honor game while pretending to be a journalist.

Everyone suffers in this life, it doesnt change the fact that people will question your ability to deliver something great when there is no evidence of it. I feel nothing but apathy of her involvement, I dont understand why people feel so strongly about her.

Please, someone in this thread who is defending her: explain to me why its not okay to complain about someone getting a job they are not qualified for?

I don't think anyone's saying it's not ok to complain. It's your right to complain about anything for any reason. God speed.

However, the reason the complaints might not be valid is simply that not having the track record or confirmed credits to back her up does not automatically mean she's going to do a bad job.

I could list pages of examples of freshman talent who hit it out of the park.

the thing is, you don't have to be a trained writer to be a good writer. it helps, but I know people who have degrees and couldn't write a good story if their lives depended on it. If she has good ideas, and knows what she wants to do with the story, she would only need a little guidance, or somebody to go over her draft and organize it more.

I get so empathy-embarrassed for the cheering nerds whenever I see this gif.

Conversely, veterans who screw up.

Jesus, this thread is brutal. Guys, she obviously pitched a good or intriguing treatment if they decided to hire her on. I really can't see how this would boil down to her being pretty.
That's how the real world operates. Men want to work alongside hot women, so hot women have a tendency to get hired.

This thread shows why I hate NeoGAF (and well, the whole internet to be fair) sometimes. Some people here are talking about other people as if they were sheer objects. Discuss things all you want - that's why we're here after all - but do not forget that behind every name, article or video game kameo there's a human being. It's not that hard.

Congrats, you managed to make the worst post of this thread, this is the kind of gross stuff that gets quote in Kotaku for their clickbait pieces on misogyny.

I will talk about public figures solely as public figures when that is the extent of their place in my life. I do not know her personally, and would never comment like I know the first thing about her as a person. I only know her work and can only comment on her in her capacity as the creator of that work.

I have ZERO experience in publishing my written work. If offered, I would take this kind of opportunity in a heartbeat.

She would be a moron if she turned it down.

I've seen it first hand. Cute girl comes in with below average credentials and gets hired ahead of several more qualified but less attractive applicants. And yes, it's gross.

Serious question, do you honestly think they only reason Chobot got the job is because she's physically attractive?

I wish her well.

Unfortunately, I'm an unattractive Asian male so there's no way for me to break into an industry by posting pictures of me licking video game systems...I hope she appreciates the fact that she's got these opportunities in the opposite way most people would get them instead of just getting pissed off about any criticism or preconceived notions people have whether they are deserved or not.

You obviously don't wish her well lol

I'm sure handheld tasting is her only redeemable quality

I don't think it just works with women. It's good looking people on average. I have a friend who's very handsome and he's leaps and bounds ahead of where his skills could take him and we all know it's because he looks like he stepped out of GQ.

I mean let's not pretend this isn't a "thing"

zombies studios:

Black Light
Blackwater
Black Light
Frogger
Ninja Turtles
Day Light

Chobot gonna fit right in with that pedigree and vision.

She's still awful but probably has more cred than Jade Raymond.

I think there are lots of writers with far more credentials dying to break into the industry. What credentials did this girl have again, and why was she selected out of likely thousands of other potential applicants?

True story, Harper Lee got her start in the publishing industry by licking a phone book.

To be fair, Chobot has stuck around in the game industry a lot longer than Harper Lee did in writing.

No.

Did Chobot write that?

Not quite sure what you're getting at, so I say this knowing I'm responding to a joke post, but just in case... Harper Lee never wrote anything before she wrote Mockingbird. Also never wrote one after.

1. Zombie dev/friend asked her to write up an outline
2. Friend like it, pitched game and outline to Atlus
3. Atlus picked it up
