Joel should've been the face of The Last of Us, not Ellie! (No Spoilers) (PlayStation Fan Rant)

Why did Naughty Dogs choose Ellie over Joel as the face of the franchise when clearly Joel is more appealing as a main character?

As a person who hasn't been spoiled of the games yet, I'm utterly shocked to see ND choosing an unappealing and obnoxious character like Ellie over a charismatic and enigmatic character like Joel.

The voice actor for Joel is much better and more well-known among gamers, so it's surprising to see his character being put in the backseat, so to say.

I'm extremely disappointed in Naughty Dogs and now I understand why so many of their talented devs left the studio before this shitshow releases.

As a PlayStation fan, I'm upset and when I'm upset, it's a serious thing.

There's several reasons, but I suspect the most likely and most understandable being that in today's current climate it is easier to market a game about a lesbian woman without conflict from certain elements of the media, versus a game about a violent white man.

Better question: Does TLOU2's direction damage Sony's brand? Is Playstation now the system choice of cucks?

I completely disagree. Not only do I think Ellie was a wonderful character in the first game, but also think she was fleshed out well in the DLC. Her being the main protagonist is the natural progression for the story. Ellie at the beginning of the story was immature and untrusting of others (Joel was untrusting too) but she grew beautifully by the end of the story. I REALLY disagree with the your statement that Joel should be the main protagonist because the voice actor is more well-known. Should John Marston have been the main character of RDR2 because people were more likely to know him? Absolutely not, and the story was better because of it. Saying the voice acting is not as good is completely subjective, but I feel both were acted wonderfully in the original game.

In my dream world, though, TLOU would never have gotten a sequel, and if it did, it would be a completely new cast. I wish companies (in movies, TV, and video games) didn't feel like they needed to retract the same IP, especially when a piece of art like Last of Us worked so well on its own and did not really need (or intended?) to have a sequel.

EDIT: I also want to add that I don't think this makes her 'the face of the franchise' anymore than Joel was. They originally both were, and I think that will always be the case, no matter the outcomes of this next games and the others that come out after (I presume).

Also, how do you know people have been leaving the studio because of this game being a "shitshow"? High turnover has been attributed to crunch.

I don't mind that Ellie is the main focus even though I prefer Joel as well.

That being said everything I hear from this game makes me think of a great franchise thrown in the garbage bin just for the sake of pandering some snowflakes who'll never even play the game.

The guys (or is it women....) at Rrreeee-era must be having a huge hard-on right now.

They really should have gone the prequel route.

I haven't been spoiled yet. So far I don't mind it at all. Joel's story ended. What else could they have done with him? Save Ellie again? Story of grown up Ellie makes more sense for a sequel.

I don't have a problem with Ellie yet. Let's see what they did with her here. If it's all forced woke shit, focusing on agenda just for the sake of it.. then it will change my perspective of it.

Ellie taking over as main character makes sense to me.

The thing is, Joel was a great character so if Ellie was going to take over that role, it was to be expected that her older version should also be a great character going through an interesting story arc. Based on the marketing so far and the reactions to the leaks (which I haven't seen/read), so far that just doesn't seem to be the case

Do we even know yet if Ellie is the main Character? Did naughty dog confirm this? Only because she is on the cover, this doesn't make her the main character.
Anyone remember MGS2?

I mean Pixar have been getting the bag with Toy Story by reusing the same core story for 4 films in a row so it sells. (Not that it's a good thing.)

That's why I have zero interest in TLOU2, but I liked TLOU1.
Watching paint dry is more exciting to me than playing "Ellie Lesbo Adventures".
Even without any romance, Joel at least is cute to look at.

I know it's a troll thread but the answer is cause Ellie is a girl. That's it, there's nothing else to it. They wanted to be progressive and shit.

I would have loved it if they made a sequel that started right where the first one finished. Like 1 second after the end. But hey, im not as creative as druckmann, lel.

Neil (funny to note one of my co-workers name's Neil and he's also gay) Druckmann was inspired by the birth of his daughter. Upon this realization, when it really actually hit him, the bloke felt bad about being sexist his whole life and did a 360.

Now he's a new found man with a debt to his newborn daughter. I have a son so I can only speculate, but the thought of some other mans penis penetrating your own daughters vagina could be nibbling at your daily thoughts, which in turn would make sense for Neil to come up with a solution of changing his daughters sexuality, as ultimately it's socially constructed from a young age.

TLOU is only a manifestation of his desires as a father-in-law, which I celebrate.

Think you answered your question OP. That's why.

It's clear that Last of Us Part II wants to be a game that focuses more about real world political / society issues rather than being a videogame per se. That's why my hype for this game is below zero.
