Joel should've been the face of The Last of Us, not Ellie! (No Spoilers) (PlayStation Fan Rant)

What makes you say she's the "face of the franchise"? If 1 was primary Joel's game and 2 is primarily Ellie's, then that's one game apiece, or equal share of the spotlight. They probably thought that Joel's story was satisfactorily finished but have an interesting idea for a story with Ellie. If there's a Last of Us 3 it might feature another new protagonist again.

I think it was the right choice. I'm glad she is the main character in this. She is a great character and I'm excited to play as her. I hope we can play as Joel at some point in the game.

Why did Naughty Dogs choose Ellie over Joel as the face of the franchise when clearly Joel is more appealing as a main character?

As a person who hasn't been spoiled of the games yet, I'm utterly shocked to see ND choosing an unappealing and obnoxious character like Ellie over a charismatic and enigmatic character like Joel.

The voice actor for Joel is much better and more well-known among gamers, so it's surprising to see his character being put in the backseat, so to say.

I'm extremely disappointed in Naughty Dogs and now I understand why so many of their talented devs left the studio before this shitshow releases.

As a PlayStation fan, I'm upset and when I'm upset, it's a serious thing.

Ehh. I'm ok with Ellie being lead.

When you stack the chips on a single character it becomes more difficult to tell an interesting story with subsequent entries in the series. The lead becomes "untouchable", there is never a real sense of danger.

Personally, while I have enjoyed TLOU, I would rather ND end the series with this game than make Joel the lead and make TLOU games till the end of time. I am more interested in seeing what worlds they shift to next. What was that space game they teased in Uncharted?

The things I like about The Last of Us universe is I feel no character however much you love them is safe, which is a realistic approach to their world. There are no good guys or bad guys, just a shit ton of people doing shady things to surivive, hell Joel alluded to thid in the first game with his brother. No one is safe or protected and thats what makes the story even more tense because things can turn on a dime.

This is one of the first games where I feel the people you kill in the first game will bring consequences that people wouldnt imagine in the second. As you see Joel as the "hero" another character in the game may see him as the villain and its been a long time since we had perspectives like that shared in the context of a story where you question "maybe Joel is the bad guy, maybe he did do the wrong thing" his actions have consequences and that feels very real in the universe of the last of us.

this was also somewhat told with David, he mentions a story of how Joel and Ellie salughtered some of his people that went out for supplies. They were doing the same thing Joel and Ellie were, survive by any means. Being the player of Joel though we had the upper hand. But in the first game Joel did terrible things. NPC's werent after him becaude they knew Ellie was a immune and a potential cure, they were after him because its kill or be killed.

I think his main arc is well covered in TLoU. However, having some early pandemic situation story (when people start to go crazy) and covering his darker times and deeds could have made for a very interesting story as well... Maybe as DLC.

But since the TLoU DLC was released I assumed that Ellie was going to be the focus, I don't see why ND can't do as they please... that seems to be the way they feel about it, I am not one to want to force them into developing a character they want to kill... You don't have to agree with it, I just don't like the fandom trying to dictate the direction of a series (you can be disappointed, annoyed, enraged by it, and voice your opinion, just know we are not in charge... They will "pay" if their story doesn't work for some reason).

To answer the OP's question hell yeah you're right, I got mad respect for Naughty Dog, they're one of the best, Joel can carry a series himself but you know what Naughty Dog isn't the only developer with bad main character decision, in Nier they literally replaced a respectable father trying to save his daughter with a character that isn't as quite as good, not as memorable, no special qualities etc.
latest

and so OP raises a good point that main character selections matter, I believe Naughty Dog could have gone deeper into the franchise IF they explored a Joel exclusive world.

But they already explores Joel, we know about his past and present. In the first game he fulfilles what he set out to do which was the eventual safety of his "adopted daughter" Joels arc was over. Him being the age he is, living now with his brother in the dam etc. There would be nothing of importance to tell esp with a grown up Ellie by his side.

I mean after the narrative of the first one...I feel like the natural next focus would be on Ellie and how she would deal with learning the truth about the ending of the first game. Not that I think TLOU actually needed a sequel, it was a pretty self contained story, but if you were to do another game featuring the same characters, I don't think another go as Joal would've been very interesting for the narrative. Unlike something like Uncharted with Nathan Drake, Joel was never the driving force behind TLOU; Ellie and the world was...and since you can't play as the world...

This literally makes zero sense if you played TLOU prequel and have 1% of knowledge of what TLOU2 is about.

Agreed. I play at least 30 mins of Gears before I read anything related to TLOU to ensure I give my testosterone a boost.
I honestly think it would be a smart move for Microsoft to position XBox as the "anti-woke" platform. Come out of the gate swinging hard with first party games centered around straight white male protagonists mowing down waves of freedom hating commies and banging sexy ass big titted babes wearing non-sensical titty combat outfits. Have Phil go on stage and make jokes about Master Chief being a tranny. The Resetera crowd will cry bloody murder but the less vocal 95% of the audience will love it. Eventually the internet will see to it that "Playstation owner" becomes synonymous with "low testosterone cuck" and it'll be all over for Sony.

Tbh being an American company I feel like Microsoft is the least likely of the three to take a stand against SJW culture in gaming. I mean yeah Naughty Dog seems to be picking this fight and they are a Sony company, but given how much creative freedom we know Sony gives their first party studios, I don't think we can take that as some sort of sign of a pervasive "woke" culture within Sony...something tells me that their Japanese stakeholders don't have much time for 58 genders and "zero biological differences".

Agreed. I'm afraid Microsoft is going down the same rabbit hole with having a female the face of Gears 5. Microsoft to counter the woke movement should revive Duke Nukem.

I don't know but the way the first game ended and the
final scene we play as Ellie makes more sense to me that
she would be the "face" despite Part 2 still continuing Ellie and Joel's journey

Two ways to look at this:

1 - Ellie's young, and eventually it'd become unrealistic to expect an old-ass Joel to still keep up with threats like he did in the first game. You don't want a Charles Bronson situation like in the later Death Proof sequels.

2 - "The force is female". Very real chance lead in Uncharted 5 will be female (Drake's daughter); Ellie of course being a female and also lesbian. Both games from Naughty Dog and both headed by Neil Druckmann.

If he retains his position at the studio I would not be surprised if their next new IP follows a similar trajectory with another female lead. And there's nothing inherently wrong with female leads. There's just a right and wrong way to do it, like with anything else. Seems like ND may've picked the wrong way to go about it with TLOU2, going by the leaks.

Dude is this a repost? Could've sworn I saw this same comment in a thread a long time ago.

Oh is that a thing? Yeah fuck it then, there is no hope.

I'd fuck Joel.

Joel uses the dvd player to put in a slice of ham so he can watch the pig butchered.

Joel finished mario twice. To the left.

Joel left the fridge open once. And so came the ice age.

Joel counted to infinity. Twice.

Joel logged in to his facebook account once. With a landline.

Joel only wears a broken watch cuz he will tell you what time it is.

Joel was given birth by his auntie cuz no one dared to fuck his mom.
What makes you think you can fuck him??

Hey buddy, Joel not being on the cover and main character is the least of our problems ... there are far worse issues cooking... have you been Hiding ?

Neil (funny to note one of my co-workers name's Neil and he's also gay) Druckmann was inspired by the birth of his daughter. Upon this realization, when it really actually hit him, the bloke felt bad about being sexist his whole life and did a 360.

Now he's a new found man with a debt to his newborn daughter. I have a son so I can only speculate, but the thought of some other mans penis penetrating your own daughters vagina could be nibbling at your daily thoughts, which in turn would make sense for Neil to come up with a solution of changing his daughters sexuality, as ultimately it's socially constructed from a young age.

TLOU is only a manifestation of his desires as a father-in-law, which I celebrate.

I'm wat-ing so hard right now.

I absolutely agree. Everyone just wanted to play as old bad ass Joel. This is the last of us.
Imagine if in last god of war You played as his wife (who dies in the intro).

I fully expect to see a

"Nate has been the face of Uncharted, not Cassie!"

thread like 5-10 years from now. You're pretty much doomed if you're a straight white male protagonist in a Sony game. ;)

Nooooooo MiyazakiHatesKojima MiyazakiHatesKojima ! We need the one and only true queen, we need a real warrior, we need the best of the best.

The Last of Us Part III feat. Xena, you read it 1st on GAF. We should let Sony know we need her, the world needs her, the universe is ready.

I still remember when I was in high school, the history teacher asked "Who killed the minotaur?" and one kid raised his hand and says "Xena!" drawing chuckles from the other kids.
