Katawa Shoujo |OT| (VN, Free, Waifus, etc)

Halfway through Rin's route and this is much, much better than the Shizune route. Not nearly as syrupy and straightforward as either Emi or Lilly's and I rather enjoy Hisao's personality being less generically can-do in this route than in those other routes.

I like you Grimace. You're an alright... whatever the fuck a Grimace is

Happy new year / anniversary, everyone.

My running has been going well. Emi running poster image thing has been a surprisingly well paced difficulty curve. I have kind of been breaking the suggested time frame by changing it from the three runs a week to every day... I'm going to be starting the things on week 5 today. Hooray!

I've started playing it. I find some parts boring/too long and the narrator's style is too rich (since the full game isn't available in my native language I have to read it in English, which makes it even more tedious) but I find Lilly so adorable I keep playing anyway.

you need those rest days. They're not there to dick around - they're so your muscles have time to build up again between strenuous periods of exertion. It's not just about burning off fat, it's also about building up your muscles.

I pretty much do absolutely nothing the rest of the time in the day, so I figured it evened out. : (

I haven't read the whole thread but I'm surprised by the apparent controversy. The game seems to depict disabled people in a respectful enough manner and, if anything, the sexual content reminds you that those people are still human beings and desire sex just like everyone else (the writing was good enough to make the sex scenes more touching than just arousing). I may be a bitter kissless virgin but I can't help but feel sorry for disabled people because some of them must be way worse off than I am in their sex lives. I've seen a documentary or two about that (where the people had much more serious physical disabilities than in Katawa Shoujo). I found them thought-provoking.

By the way, if you haven't done it already, watch (The) Intouchables.

Edit: here's one of those documentaries I was referring to (in French):

Disabilities + porn game + 4chan = The premise is quite something.

And thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, going in, I did not expect it to be so touching. Then again, going in, I didn't know anything about the game before going in besides that it was a dating game with cripple girls. I was really surprised by it, in a good way.

Finished Lilly's route (good ending).

I think this game has single-handedly cured my depressive tendencies. Despite the numerous flaws in its writing (I've found a great review by someone who didn't like the game but unfortunately it's in French), the story has changed my view on life and everything in quite a few ways and made me a happier person.
Obviously it plays out slightly differently depending on the route, but I love that they started Hisao in a state of complete clinical depression from his diagnosis.

You have the arc of him getting used to the school, getting over his old girlfriend, finding a new girlfriend, but then also dealing with his depression from his diagnosis . It plays out in a very gradual way in the background, and flares up at moments like when he gets the letter from his ex. At least in the routes I played, he doesn't have a sudden epiphany and is instantly better, but he's surprised when he realizes how far he's come.

There was such a startling amount of honesty in so many aspects of the game. It really resonated with me on a level I didn't expect.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"

The degree to which he suffers from serious depression seems dependent on the arc you choose - i.e. in Rin's arc he seems really messed up, which seems only partially because his personality traits are bouncing off of Rin's and probably more because the writer is a different person.

My interpretation has always been that in Act 1, the choices you make determine the type of person that Hisao is post-diagnosis, and that in term determines who you're naturally going to hang out with more. To put it another way, you're not changing him based on your choices, the choices reflect the kind of person Hisao already is.
Or, to put it another another way, actions in the future change those in the past. Schrodinger's Hisao.

That's certainly an interesting way of putting it, I viewed it more as the girl Hisao spends his time with helps shapes his new post depression personality, Emi and Rin being quite noticeable ones for this but your Act 1 theory intrigues me,
you've just opened a whole new level of mindfuckery with Schrodinger's Hisao clearly.

I recently replayed the Emi route since i'm jumping back to all my GotY list candidates to refresh myself, I still got those hard hitting feels, definitely list worthy stuff.
Also put the games soundtrack at number 2 for SotY, what can I say? I like it a lot.

All I want to do is continue to play KS but I don't have the time (lots of homework), so I downloaded the soundtrack.

I couldn't make it past the first song, as it made me burst into tears. I don't know what happened to me - 4LS are evil geniuses.

Yeah, those guys really did something special. Considering that 4LS is dead, I wonder if in the future they'll get together again for another project.

The music is incredible.

Lmao. Dem feels man. Just listening to stuff like Wiosna and Innocence stirs up nostalgia for me.

Is there an easy way to synchronize your saves between Linux and Windows computers? Every time I finish playing I need to go to the save folder, copy the save files to my Dropbox folder, then go to the Dropbox folder in my other computer/OS and copy the files in the other location.

You could probably just keep them in the dropbox folder and then use symbolic links.
