Killer is Dead making its way to PC

That's why I said this is not the film industry. He is still directly responsible, he is the creative director of his studio and he choses what role to play in every game. If you ask me NMH doesn't top Shadows of the Damned but it was a downward spiral from that point.

Shadows of the Damned is a great example. Suda 51 originally had a darker, more psychological horror game in mind. EA wouldn't let that happen.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolo...hadows-Of-The-Damned-developer-interview.html

The collaboration between the two developers began around six years ago, just as Suda 51 finished work on Killer 7. Mikami says the developer showed him some concepts for a game he hadn’t started work on. The dark story attracted Mikami to the project and the pair of them set to work.

“The story was pretty different to begin with,” says Mikami, “It was a lot darker and also was far more complex. Right at the beginning, we didn’t really have much humour in the game, but the Grasshopper (Manufacture, the developer) staff brought jokes into it and I think it turned out pretty well.”

Hm, I skipped this when it came out for consoles but I'll definitely check it out on the PC this time around.

GH not EA.

For the third time, he is the head of Grasshopper Manufacture. Saying the game was compromised doesn't mean shit would have changed if he CHOOSE to assume a different position.

Well ummm now I'm glad I didn't buy the PS3 version yet :P I will buy it day one on PC! :D And hope we don't need any Durante magic to have it run in native 1080p :(

Amazing decision, the game is absolutely drenched in style that was screaming to be seen in 1080p with a smooth framerate. I skipped double dipping on MGR PC, but this would be a legit gameplay upgrade.

So, in one year-ish:

- Deadly Premonition
- Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3
- Ikaruga
- Resident Evil 4 HD
- Killer is Dead
- King of Fighters XIII
- Metal Slug 3
- Trails in the Sky First/Second
- Metal Gear Rising
- Agarest
- Typing of the Dead: Overkill
- Ninja Gaiden Yaiba (lol)

Reeeeaaally awesome trend, hopefully it continues.

Soon "no japanese games" can be marked off the excuses console gamers give about not liking pc gaming.

I don't believe he wanted to make a comedic game, but I guess we'll never know.

Yes we do know. the studio he LEADS made the game as we know it. I'd say it would be extremely rare for a game not to change at all from its conceptual stages.

If anything your article confirms Suda didn't have any complaints from EA "they have been very supportive and respectful of our creativity."

Amazing decision...

I'd say for a big part we are talking about either gen end games or games that failed to live up to sales expectations. I mean if we saw MGS: GZ as a result of Rising's PC performance, then I'd say there may be a trend.

All we need now are the big holdouts, Atlus and Arc Systems Works

Well Atlus is owned by Sega now, who makes most of its money via PC sales... will be interesting to see if future Atlus titles will be PC as well.

Did the success of Dark Souls lead to all of these Japanese ports? Ever since DS I've noticed a lot more ports from companies not named Capcom or Sega.

I doubt it because if there was ONE game that should have been affected by Dark Souls PC performance that would have been Dragon's Dogma. Outside of that genre publishers releasing more PC ports is pretty common between gens.

I love Suda, but wasn't this game a huge disappointment?

It's one of their best games in terms of combat with a nice visual style, but it falls very short in story and characters. Overall it's an average game with the usual Grasshopper oddities. Nice candidate for a sharper, faster PC revisit though, since the original is marred by performance issues.

I really really loved this game, will definitely double dip for PC. The music and inoffensive gameplay, combined with the crazy story and varied bosses really scratched an itch.

One of the most polarizing of his games with fans. Some think its one of his worst games, some think its one of his best. I liked it, gameplay is timing, combo, dodging, mashing based, but found it fun and fluid for a Grasshopper title. Story dissapointed many at first and confused others, I liked it more as I replayed though and picked up on a lot of things. Weirdness as you'd expect from a Grasshopper title. Best part is it's style, it has some absolutely slick style, great look, really cool drawn animated cutscenes, the music fits well, and in my opinion, most of the bosses are fantastic. Gigalo could be offensive and kind of useless, and added several sidequests to try and lengthen it.

This is good news. It sounds like Japanese developers are starting to take PC gaming a lot more seriously. I'm sure it's a good way for them to recoup dev costs.

Buying it just to support japanese games on PC and Grasshopper, even if ever since going PS360 they've fallen hard from GCN/PS2/Wii/NDS.

This kind of game doesn't interest me all that much. Or at least, from what I know of it, it doesn't seem to appeal to me personally.

But I'm happy to see more Japanese games reach the PC.

Doubt it. I think the other Japanese companies are beginning to port to PC for the same reasons DS was ported.. They are beginning to understand it's a viable platform. Not because of DS itself.

There was another interview:
Did Shadows Of The Damned, your collaboration with Suda51, turn out as you'd initially intended?

No, it became a completely different game. That was a bit disappointing. I think Suda was unable to create the scenario he'd originally had in his head, and he rewrote the scenario several times. I think his heart was broken. He's such a unique creator, so it seems to me that he was not quite comfortable with making this game.

It did get good reviews in the end.

Yes, pretty good, but it's not a case of whether it was good or bad. The game was nothing like Suda had planned, which is rather sad. Mind you, if we'd made it as he originally planned, it probably would have sold even less, but it would have been very unique.

Ultimately GHM/Suda is to blame for how Shadows of the Damned turned out, but the game was not what he originally wanted to create and I do believe pressure from EA is a strong cause of that. Personally the saddest thing to happen this generation, if you ask me. Kurayami sounded like a dream-game to me.

Will buy. I really like this trend of late ports as weird as that sounds. Have the games released on consoles (or any platform for that matter) and have them release all the DLC they want until they're content and then have them port it to PC with all the DLC included AND a lower price point. Since PC isn't my main platform I think it's great since I get to pick up the "definitive" edition of a game in some form. I'm curious if you guys are fine with paying more just have it released day and date with consoles (and much more if they plan out DLC) or prefer it like this as I do.

So basically, Shadows of the Damned gave Suda eye cancer?

The concept of what Shadows of the Damned could of been is absolutely fascinating and I would of loved to play it. That said, I loved the actual Shadows of the Damned that came out and feel it to be one of Grasshopper's best games, with just the right amount of style and craziness, but also balanced with a deeper background story and likable characters, plus an absolutely amazing soundtrack and audio design and actually kind of well-paced, for the most part. Surprisingly, I found the weakest area of Shadows to be an area I feel most other Grasshopper games excel in, which was the boss battles.

I have a strange fondness for Shadows of the Damned, and am happy it came out as it is.

I also really like Killer is Dead, but not as much as Shadows personally. Though Killer Is Dead has some fantastic style that just goes through the whole title (in my opinion the title has some of the best style out of any Grasshopper game), and I really like the bosses in Killer is Dead, and its gameplay is fun to me, but it has its problems. I put it on par with Lollipop Chainsaw, which I like about as much but for different reasons than Killer is Dead.

Ya know I don't know all that much about the series. Is it sort of a linear experience like Killer7 (not that I mind that at all) but I remember there being a motorcycle in the game? Or am I mistaken? Does it have a semi-open world way of progressing?

The little gameplay I watched of this, it looked ... Tedious. Maybe player wasn t very good.

Combat in KiD isn't in any way deep but it's serviceable for what it is. There's a good sense of momentum and all of the mechanics come together to keep that momentum going but there aren't enough mechanics at play or enough depth in each of those individual mechanics to make it as interesting as some other action games. If you've played No More Heroes and liked its combat then you should like KiD but much like NMH it's a game that is style over substance.

That's No More Heroes you're thinking of, it by the same developer.

I am interested in this game mainly due to its extraordinary visual style. Other than that I have no id what this game is like.

Could someone give me a brief explanation/ introduction?
