Killzone Shadow Fall 9 minutes of single player gameplay

Its pretty spectacular graphically. If anything that panoramic scene of the Helghan side of the wall is even more impressive the the introductory flyover of Vekta. From the opening shot on 2/20 this is the most 'next gen' looking title I've seen. As other posters have said, this could be the most impressive looking game on any platform. There are obviously plenty of PC games that look cleaner and run better but nearly every other game to this point has been designed to scale down to current gen consoles. This one doesn't need to and it shows. I'm excited to see what PC versions of next gen games are capable of from this baseline.

I'm also impressed with the artwork. This had been an area of weakness for Guerrilla and its great to see them address it so comprehensively.

Go into the BF4 forums to see what they are capable of.

I already listed multiple things. The game gives you a lot of freedom to do w/e, pick off enemies with stealth, the flying robot, seeing enemies through walls, annnnd regen health. But wait, there's more! From ign:

"The good news is that, while health is regenerative, you can still use health packs on the fly that will heal you quickly and slow down time for a limited period, too, giving you an edge against incoming hordes of aggressive foes."

That sounds absolutely ridiculous to me. So not only can I hide and have my health regenerate but I can also heal it quicker and SLOW DOWN TIME? So you can regain health back for free, got a robot buddy to kill shit for you, you can pick off enemies with stealth which never works because it basically means designing spaces where enemies do dumb stuff to allow you to sneak up on them. What's dumb about that is the "punishment" for getting caught is WELL NOW YOU SHOOT THINGS.

The big issue I have with regen health is it SEVERELY limits what the enemies can do. You can't have really have a variety in damage because lol player can just go find cover, so in pretty much all of these games enemies kill you way too slowly on "normal" and ridiculously fast on harder difficulties. No regard for pacing or anything, just straight from the start. That's not really a very engaging or fun way of making a game difficult. It seems like they're just throwing options at the player and not really making that well of a designed game. I've played Killzone 1 and 2, a bit of 3, and none of them gave me any confidence that this game would really impress me.

I'm not calling the game generic or w/e but I'm saying their choice in how health works is terrible. I've seen enough, there's no way they can do enough to make it work. I loathe regen health in shooters because it just bottle necks what you can do with so much stuff.

Well from a lot of videos I've seen it's pretty easy to get killed. If it's too easy just bump the difficulty!

It doesn't regenerate and slow down time at the same time, only one or the other. Basically, and correct me if I'm wrong, I think its a similar health system to KZ2 MP, where you regenerate health slowly, but never to the original maximum unless you have a medkit or whatever.

In Shadow Fall, instead of a Medkit you have adrenaline shots, they can be used for one of two things. Either to regenerate your health (assuming immediately and to the max?), or use them to briefly slow down time instead. Not both. So you have to be tactical with how you use and preserve these adrenaline boosts and whether you use them to slow down time for a tactical gunplay advantage, or instead to regenerate health. It's a great balancing act.

The quote there says "and slows down time". Please show me something proving that's incorrect.

Also I'm talking solely about the single player here. I watched footage, his health FULLY recovered, complete with the red stuff all over the screen effect. Going off of this btw. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4nA4cPRj-w

Looking at it all I can think "wow that looks pretty...and that's about it".

Edit-
Well from a lot of videos I've seen it's pretty easy to get killed. If it's too easy just bump the difficulty!

Easy to get killed how exactly. I feel like I covered this, I'm sick of shooters where the only thing that affects difficulty is how much damage the enemies do. It's pretty easy to get killed in Call of Duty on the highest difficulty but it's not like a smart challenge or anything.

Also it would be nice if someone could explain to me why the hell there needs to be an option to regain health even faster when you already can just regain health by not getting shot. It doesn't seem terribly hard to do that.

I don't have the link, but it doesn't do both. Adrenaline shots either revive you, or can be used to slow down time for gunplay advantages. There's an interview somewhere where one of the games lead designers is commenting about exactly that. And he even says that it's something they put in place for added tactical consideration.

So you can either heal faster or you can slow down time. Ok.

I am still failing to see how this addresses any of my other issues. Once again, gonna say the choice of health system they're using alone bothers the hell out of me, giving me more options within that space doesn't help.

That is correct. Heal faster (it's quite slow otherwise), or slow down time. Thing is, if you've ever played Killzone 2/3, you'll know the AI in this franchise is among the best in any fps if not the best, so it's not like many other games where you can just merrily hide behind a wall till you regenerate. Enemies will constantly flank you, team up on you and pressure you etc.

I said I played Killzone 2 and 3. The ai performs alright but the over all design of the game made it incredibly meh for me.

I don't know how many times I need to restate my issue with regen health seeing how everyone seems to want to dance around refuting that. It absolutely ruins enemy variety and design to make things easier for people who can't handle managing healing items or whatever the hell. Games like half life can have weaker enemies and stage hazards and whatnot because it's not all or nothing for the player, small damage can build up over time and be a problem. In Killzone and every other shooter ever this gen you're pretty much either at full health or dead in 2 fucking seconds on the harder difficulties ooorrrrr you're playing below that and it's stupid easy if you're competent. This has been an issue in Halo, Killzone, CoD, Gears, any game with this kind of health system. Based off what I've seen and heard Shadowfall will in no way fix this issue, instead it's just awkwardly throwing more things at the player. The ai can be the best thing ever but it still has to actually perform within the design of the game, and that design is not appealing to me at all. I complain about this because it seems like they want to do something different which I really like but they don't want to let go of essentially the biggest problem with their past games.

I wasn't that hyped for Killzone until these videos came out. Killzone 2 had amazing multiplayer and a good single player (BOSSES!) but Killzone 3 burned me so bad. Soon as the preview thread went up I wanted to preorder the next day lol.

Read the guys' statement. Here, let me help you:

His statement invited mentioning *another* game outside of KZ. It wasn't derailing the thread at all.

For whatever reason maneil doesn't like BF4 and/or the PC version of BF4. You upseted him by merely mentionning the game!

The biggest problem for you. Regen health is not a problem for most. Certainly not for me, I feel the combat in Halo is far superior to anything the Half Life series could muster.

Just my opinion but I think this looks a lot better than Battlefield 4, especially in the visuals.

The rapelling alone in Killzone Shadow Fall, and how the camera works when doing it, has me all hot and bothered. God damn it looks fucking awesome. Rapelling down the side of the building right onto the lobby, and land immediately into a firefight? With the incredible city skyline as the backdrop? Someone hold me. I do not think I'm ready for this next gen shit lol

Ridiculous.

Now this is what I call a campaign blowout, not the crap that GT had. Seems like they are keeping their promise of more ope level design which I love. I am so sick of corridor shooters.

Interesting video preview from Official PlayStation Magazine UK. Some of the features they talk about is great, and the guy says when he played it at Guerrilla's office he chose a very low-key vent-happy Deus Ex style playthrough. I really hope this is a viable option; it would be so awesome if this genuinely supported different kinds of playstyles.

I'm quite happy about that really, and have faith that they can do that considering that it was possible to do so (in terms of different playstyles) with Killzone Mercenary on Vita.

Watching that video now, loving the different abilities you have access to in SP. The fact that the missions themselves seem varied (fighting off a terrorist attack, infiltrating Helghan territory, hostage rescue) has me pumped to play the final game.

The Battlefield thread is going in circles at this point. Pretty sure they covered everything within the first 20 pages. :P

Regardless, Killzone remains the best looking game on PS4. Infamous will be the first challenger to that throne.

Drive Club and the order looks fantastic as well.

This thread is missing all the people that constantly claim that Killzone is a shitty FPS series. Only those that know the truth remain.

It really is unfortunate that the Killzone series carries this stigma by so many people. The series has never been shitty and KZ2 was absolutely incredible.

well if i do buy a PS4 this year atleast i know to stick with Killzone atleast for the singleplayer
since the reviewers said the BF4 SP sucks lol[.......im a SP FPS type of guy

wow preview. They did a great job and was actual useful. So congrats.

On the game itself. looks absolutely delicious. They really did an amazing job and set a bench mark real high right from the launch for 1st party studios.

Sony's first party titles look head and shoulders better graphically, right out of the gate as well.

I recall a few individuals out there who thought Worldwide Studios would lose their edge since the hardware is now easy to develop for and they would be on even footing with 3rd parties.

It's the same for all the games now though. Whole forum has gone to shit.

Killzone looks insane.
Ryse is looking phenomenal as well.
Can't be affording both though. So Xbox will have to wait till the summer.

Best looking game I've seen I think. Certainly considerably better looking than I ever expected from a launch title. Still can't believe it has an open ended gameplay to much of it, plus 60fps multiplayer. All at 1080p to boot...
