Killzone Shadow Fall 9 minutes of single player gameplay

Best looking game I've seen I think. Certainly considerably better looking than I ever expected from a launch title. Still can't believe it has an open ended gameplay to much of it, plus 60fps multiplayer. All at 1080p to boot...

Man I want to like this but I can't get over how generic this looks. Time to fire 1 billion bullets again. I wish GG could make something else than a FPS this launch. They are no doubt kings at what they do.

Open world or semi open shooters are not generic, on the contrary they are a rarity. You have Halo, Crysis, and that's about it. Whereas military or linear shooters wise there's KZ (the older one's), COD, BF, Resistance, Gears, MoH, Haze and pretty much every other shooter under the sun. That automatically makes Shadow Fall non generic, given it's gameplay design ethos is not a common one.

Couple that with it's unique sci-fi futuristic setting, art and narrative, along with the other new additions to the game, and it's anything but generic really. In-fact, it's the most unique and non generic shooter coming out in the next few months.

What's generic about it? There only so many ways to shoot a gun.

And you got that OWL to spice things up. KZ is much better to play versus watching most of the time.

But you shoot bullets.

From the first person perspective.

#Generic

True true, I stand corrected.

Just sick of (imo) the hollywood action shooter, "buckle up soldier it's gonna be a bumpy ride". An opinion I base solely on the videos we've seen so far and the other KZ games of course. Just saying GGs tech would be awesome to see in something different this launch.

The art design, open ended mission structure, weapon feel, and setting are all far from generic. They've openly admitted to working on a new IP that's very different from Killzone, rumored to be an RPG. For launch, it was probably better for them to get their engine up and running and making a game that they're more familiar with, plus it's a recognized IP for the launch.

I do wish GG put this extreme technical prowess and horsepower towards something else and not a shooter but this new KZ isn't really generic, KZ has never been generic actually. It just suffers from being an FPS game

They're changing quite a bit for this entry compared to what the games were usually like. It reminds me a lot of Far Cry 3 now actually

I REALLY disliked Killzone 2's lag*, and have avoided killzone 3 and am somewhat scared of spending 60$ on this one because of it. Should I be concerned?

* By lag I mean it felt like it had substantial lag from when you fired to when your bullet hit. After playing CoD4 and going to KZ2 (just for the campaign) just didn't handle as well as I would have liked, felt too clunky. I think people have said it had pretty bad frame delay or something in KZ2 that was improved in 3?

Don't get me wrong, it might be a great game.

It's just when I watch the gameplay videos I feel like I've seen/played this game one thousand times before but with worse graphics. I feel like it's the typical launch FPS.

No need to be concerned. It was greatly improved in 3 and I've heard the controls are even more responsive in KZSF.

I agree whole heartedly. But the new open ended gameplay and missions, multiple ways to tackle each mission, back story and Helghan culture being explored, the grey sides to the power struggle, the Berlin or Palestine/Israel esque wall divide and other aspects of the art and visual design do imo set this apart from other shooters and it's own predecessors. Even from the story trailer you can tell this one is going to be more layered and more rich when it comes to narrative diversity.

GG's second team are already working on another title and have been for some time now. The game is rumoured to be an open world RPG.

Nah. They already greatly improved it for KZ3, and Shadow Fall will no doubt be improved further still. The new controller and it's improved dead zones, tighter sticks etc will no doubt help a tonne too, and the MP being 60fps means half the input lag right there. So yea, I wouldn't worry about lag being an issue at all.

SP is roughly 40fps too, so that should help lag as well.

This might top the Resogun voxel explosion as my favorite next gen gif. Man, I can't wait to see this running on my TV.

Hmm yea..outside of higher resolutions and super high AA ...this "IS" the best looking game to date on ANY platform when we talk graphic effects and other technical aspects going on here. I've played Cyrsis 3, BF3,etc on my PC with my 3770K@4.4ghz, 16gb ram, 7970 VaporX@1200core/1600mem...i been there! While i can achieve a higher overall "cleanness" on my PC using higher resolutions and a ton more AA spread over my PC games...this PS4 game surpasses ANY game I've played on my PC from a pure graphical effects standpoint....this IS a true next gen game.

Note: I am not saying my PC couldn't handle this..im sure it can, obviously but my point is this PS4 game is raising the bar graphically, bar none..all fanboyism aside, mind you.

How it all began....

I'm outta this thread of nonsense claiming KZ:SF > BF4 technical graphics garbage..

He didn't mention BF4. He said BF3. He said any PC game *he's* played. You bolded that part yourself. :s

Everything this game gives you seems ridiculously broken, the little robot, regen health, object highlighting, etc.

It's nice that it's kinda breaking away from CoD but it seems really poorly thought out design wise.

'Broken', eh? Please explain. :)

The artstyle shines as usual. Loving the blade Runner vibe, which I've got from the soundtrack too. (From the little I've heard of it).

I thought I was the only one. I found it very noticeable (soundtrack) during the very first part of the reveal trailer.

Those GIFs make me wish I'm not awful at FPS (not to mention the headache).

Its pretty spectacular graphically. If anything that panoramic scene of the Helghan side of the wall is even more impressive the the introductory flyover of Vekta. From the opening shot on 2/20 this is the most 'next gen' looking title I've seen. As other posters have said, this could be the most impressive looking game on any platform. There are obviously plenty of PC games that look cleaner and run better but nearly every other game to this point has been designed to scale down to current gen consoles. This one doesn't need to and it shows. I'm excited to see what PC versions of next gen games are capable of from this baseline.

I'm also impressed with the artwork. This had been an area of weakness for Guerrilla and its great to see them address it so comprehensively.

Just played Killzone Shadowfall Multiplayer today at the Brazil Game Show Event.

For PS4, we could play:

-Driveclub
-Knack
-Killzone Shadowfall
-Assassin's Creed 4
-Black Light Retribution
-Octodad
-Contrast
-That indie SSM game with a weird name

For Xbox One, we had:
-KIller Instinct
-Ryse
-Forza 5
-Dead Rising 3
-Kinect Sports

The line to play Killzone Shadowfall was by far the biggest one, something I found delightfully surprising. Poor Horp, the framerate was stable 60 and it was the most impressive console game on the showfloor. Recoil was very low, but the weapons didn't have any aim assist, making very difficult to land shots as it was.

Liked both controllers. People should be happy with any of them.

And League of Legends was more popular than any new console. lol

What. The popularity of this thing never fails to surprise me. I'd personally barely heard of it till recent months.

Any more detailed impressions you could share? About anything listed there, really...

Oh yeah definitely. When that music faded in during the opening of the Shadow Fall reveal at the PS Meeting back in Feb. Chills.

Well no shit, Sherlock. This is one of the three first party titles launching on the PS4 (the console I was interested in) over a significant degree of time, and it looks terrible. The other two looking equally as uninteresting. Of course third party support is bad across the board for both systems, so if anything this just reduces my chances of buying a new console.

By all means, tell us what you want in an FPS. I get really sick of people coming in and saying "oh this looks like shit, boring, more of the same etc". That is a weak argument. Be specific. What about it looks boring and samey? What could they do to make you intersted? How would you do things differently? Dont bring your weak generalizations because it adds nothing to the conversation. You could say that about literally every game being made. Otherwise you are just doing this to piss people off who are interested in the game. Be critical, not a douche.

Don't really care about people not liking Killzone or making shitty posts to that effect. But I would like a description on how it is generic and how other console shooters aren't.

And this is from 2012. :p

From the UK here, and honestly don't know a single person who plays this, and I have a lot of friends. Seems bizarre to me, but I don't doubt that it is this popular mind. Here Fifa and COD tend to be the main big names people are always talking about. Oh and GTA too, and to a much lesser extent, GT.

'Broken', eh? Please explain. :)

I already listed multiple things. The game gives you a lot of freedom to do w/e, pick off enemies with stealth, the flying robot, seeing enemies through walls, annnnd regen health. But wait, there's more! From ign:

"The good news is that, while health is regenerative, you can still use health packs on the fly that will heal you quickly and slow down time for a limited period, too, giving you an edge against incoming hordes of aggressive foes."

That sounds absolutely ridiculous to me. So not only can I hide and have my health regenerate but I can also heal it quicker and SLOW DOWN TIME? So you can regain health back for free, got a robot buddy to kill shit for you, you can pick off enemies with stealth which never works because it basically means designing spaces where enemies do dumb stuff to allow you to sneak up on them. What's dumb about that is the "punishment" for getting caught is WELL NOW YOU SHOOT THINGS.

The big issue I have with regen health is it SEVERELY limits what the enemies can do. You can't have really have a variety in damage because lol player can just go find cover, so in pretty much all of these games enemies kill you way too slowly on "normal" and ridiculously fast on harder difficulties. No regard for pacing or anything, just straight from the start. That's not really a very engaging or fun way of making a game difficult. It seems like they're just throwing options at the player and not really making that well of a designed game. I've played Killzone 1 and 2, a bit of 3, and none of them gave me any confidence that this game would really impress me.

I'm not calling the game generic or w/e but I'm saying their choice in how health works is terrible. I've seen enough, there's no way they can do enough to make it work. I loathe regen health in shooters because it just bottle necks what you can do with so much stuff.

It doesn't regenerate and slow down time at the same time, only one or the other. Basically, and correct me if I'm wrong, I think its a similar health system to KZ2 MP, where you regenerate health slowly, but never to the original maximum unless you have a medkit or whatever.

In Shadow Fall, instead of a Medkit you have adrenaline shots, they can be used for one of two things. Either to regenerate your health (assuming immediately and to the max?), or use them to briefly slow down time instead. Not both. So you have to be tactical with how you use and preserve these adrenaline boosts and whether you use them to slow down time for a tactical gunplay advantage, or instead to regenerate health. It's a great balancing act.

I hear this term a lot from console warriors that just like to slight killzone for some reason.

the series is far from generic, the art style is very distinctive and unique...they should find better insults to come up with
