I cant't believe how badly they screwed up both software and hardware.

I can. Back when this thing was rumored to be in production months ago, word was the first iteration would be quickly put together for the Holidays as a stopgap. It supposedly wasn't even designed by Lab126, but the successor will be.

Hysterical how people will lap this up despite it being a pretty clearly rushed "stopgap" with several flaws. "B...b..but it's Amazon!" Why anyone would give their money to a company who is basically playing people for idiots (by releasing a subpar device despite having enormous resources and being a year late to market in the 7" tab category) is beyond me. But maybe that's just me.

I have a big problem with huge companies in general when they get too big for their britches and start just assuming success based on their brand name without really delivering the quality people deserve. Hated it with WalMart, hated it with Sony in the gaming arena, hate it now with Amazon.

Um, it's probably going to stream the mobile version to you. That's the one it lets you download to the device anyway.

Agreed. Here's hoping the Nook Tablet doesn't get lost in the Kindle Fire hype machine, as the hands on videos so far look fantastic.

B&N has had over a year in tablet experience and it's certainly showing now. Beefy specs, refined design, and what looks to be a more pleasurable user experience compared to the Fire. The only thing they lack is content outside of books and periodicals, though B&N said they'll be announcing new 3rd party partnerships to remedy that soon.

Who in the world would ever equate Walmart with "quality"?

It will get lost in the Kindle Fire hype machine though. Look at the Nook Touch. Arguably the best eReader out there but everyone still talks Kindle. The Nook line just doesn't have the public on its side.

Goes to show you the sway these huge mega-companies like Amazon, Google etc. have in terms of mindshare. The Nook Touch was worlds beyond Kindle 3 in every respect, and though it sold well, I doubt it sold anywhere close to what the K3 did. The Nook Tablet also looks to be the superior product - at the very least, it wasn't rushed out the door, which imo is an insult to customers given Amazon's resources and how far behind they were in coming to market.

If Amazon were a smaller company and wasn't able to eat the $10-50 they purportedly lose on the sale of each device, and had to come to market at $220-$250, the difference would be even more stark.

On a side note, I am firmly against companies in any industry being allowed to sell any product below cost. At cost? Fine. But not below. All it does is give larger companies an inherent and oftentimes insurmountable advantage.

ugh, just got the kindle fire and have been setting it up. I hope If the wifi network screen is not an indication of things to come, scrolling the list was incredibly laggy and jerky..

edit: so scrolling in general is not an issue, it's fast, responsive and accurate. And I like that when you stop scrolling, it automatically changes the position to include any item that otherwise would be only partially visible.

but holy shit is the quality of the streamed videos horrible. it's one giant pixelated mess, almost to the point of being unwatchable. there better be an option to increase the quality, or it's going right back.

edit 2: what the hell, it enters sleep mode after something like 10 seconds, disconnects wifi and throws you out of the current video. And reconnecting is so slow that after unlocking and trying to resume the video it tells me "active wifi connection" required. what the fucking hell amazon.

Yes, the sleep thing is really, really annoying. I can't believe they let this out like that.

There's no place in the settings to change the sleep timer?

Of course there is.

Am I the only guy feeling happy with this 200 dollars purchase? After 2 nights of use, still pretty good.

Shouldn't video playback be independent of normal sleep time out?

I've had it a few hours now and I am loving it. No problems others are having (WiFi dropping out, sleep problems, video quality). Loading books is a mess as calibre doesn't support it yet, but I am very satisfied.

You're comparing the last generation Kindle to the Nook Touch? I guess we should mention the Nook touch is also better than both the Kindle 1 and Kindle 2. The K3 went on sale in August of 2010, so for almost a year it provided the superior reading experience with the eInk Pearl display.

This painting of Barnes and Noble as the poor little start-up is beyond ludicrous.

I'm very satisfied. All my issues are software related, and considering this is the 1.0 of the OS, I'm good to wait.

How many ereader apps are in the Amazon store? Could someone check which ones work properly on the Fire? EZPDF, Aldiko, Bluefire, Kobo, Mantano reader, Comic Reader Mobi to name a few...

I bought it to use as a digital photography portfolio. Works out really nicely so far - fits right in my camera bag. I'm also using it for internet/email and some PDFs. No complaints. Thing is easy to use and moves fast. The display is awesome for my photos and I like the smaller tablet size. For $200 it works out perfectly for what I need.

I'm happy with mine. Reponse and video framerate is choppy if something else is downloading in the background, but otherwise solid for me. Doesn't go to sleep if I'm playing a video from Amazon or Netflix. For a $200 7" tablet, it has met or exceeded my expectations.

I've only had a few hours to play with it, but I think this will work out well for what I need it for, a companion for me to view notes and other things while editing my books on my laptop. I also ran some Netflix with none of the problems mentioned so far.
Maybe some thing will come as I delve deeper into it, but I think it's exactly what I wanted. It easily connected to my wifi and so far all the apps I've downloaded work well. The Sleep thing can be played with in the settings, so it doesn't bother me.

My buddy just bought one for his non-techie wife. She has no experience with the ipad and had no real expectations.

She absolutely love it.

Just watched the Tested QL and they said that if you want this thing for browsing and general use then this is not the device for you. Is this pretty much the consensus? Has Amazon addressed any of the issues yet or mentioned patches in the near future? My laptop is shot and I wanted to get something to bridge the gap between now and when the iPad 3 comes out.

I think Tested guys are overly harsh to it for a very special reason: their homepage tested.com loads very slowly on Fire. And the reason? It's bloated with youtube videos ( I'm counting 6 as of now).

I've been browsing on it for 2 days. I like sitting back on the couch with it on my lap better then the laptop or PC. It loads fast and smoothly, not sure what the complaints are. I use a lot of image heavy photography sites and it loads and manuevers fine.

I've used an iPad and it's a bit smoother (of course). The Fire works just fine for browsing though. Again, not sure where the complaints are coming from on a few review sites.

Nope, same exact packaging, which is actually pretty nice.
I went to Target and was going to buy one, but something told me to wait for the one Amazon is sending me. I watched the Tested QL and he said the serial number on the box is tied to your account. So, I'm not sure how that would play out with returning the one I got from Amazon to Target. I played around with the demo unit some more and I still think it's an awesome device. Also, I got mine for $192.99 with 1-day shipping (I realize I won't get it in 1 day). There's a code you can put in at checkout that brings the total to $189.99 if you're using Mastercard.

I'm enjoying it a lot. Everything seems to function as it should.

Same here. I've gotten a lot of use out of it already. Reading Walking Dead finally, catching up on a few notes for my work presentation, browing GAF and my usual sites, streaming my music collection, all from my couch on a tablet that cost $200. Nook does seem to be ahead on the streaming, but I have no doubt both streaming apps can be fixed via software.

I brought it into the office today to show it off to my team, and they all seemed impressed. A few were on the fence, but once they held it, decided it was worth the purchase. For $200, its right at the "impulse buy" territory.

For something that's supposed to be able to play Flash, the thing should at least scroll once it's loaded. I found that pretty bad.

I just sent mine back today. It was too buggy for me. The Netflix/amazon streaming quality was the final nail in its coffin. :(

Hopefully the next one will be better.

There is an email listed in Docs that you can send them to, or you can connect it to your PC.

I tried sending a Mobi to that address and it didnt work. What type of cable is needed because none of mine are working.

A quick tip: Quickoffice has a pretty decent file manager build in. It comes in handy when you need move things around.

Also, despite it is stated in the User's guide, don't send pictures to you kindle email: they will show up as individual e-books and you can't see them in Gallery. Instead, attach to your email and download on Fire.

Hard to believe. Check (or change) your kindle email address on Amazon.com. You need a micro USB cable to connect to PC.

Tried doing all that and still didn't work. This surprisingly inconvenient and testing my patience. Now I have to order a micro USB cord because they only included a wall charger. Grrr.

[EDIT] Hold up it took a while to sync. Now is there a way to move it to books instead of docs?

The orange light comes on when it's charging. Are you sure the USB cable is all the way in?

Video quality is pretty disappointing on this thing. I think its good enough to tide me over until the iPad 3.

Browser could be faster. Touch response isn't as tight as my phone, but it's version 1 after all.

I can't say I'm that impressed. :\

Part of it is the reason why I've always held off on getting an iPad: I have a desktop, I have an iPhone (and even that has been relegating to *just* a podcast + phone machine) , I don't really need a tablet.

So I didn't need a tablet, I bought a tablet, and I find that I don't need a tablet.

Figures.

edit: Also, there are issues that I have with this that are shared with my iPhone (minuscule text on webpages, microstutters, infrequent unresponsive touch controls (more frequent on Fire), etc.

How well does this thing stream stuff from Justin/Twitch.tv? I'd love to have something I could set up next to my monitor for Starcraft streams.

Posting from my Fire. As an ipad and touchpad owner, I can safely say this is worth the price. I'm actually pretty impressed with it. Oh and I had no idea you can share a Prime account with up to 4 people. My mom shared her account with me and now I have all these videos to watch :) video quality isn't too bad really...I expected way worse after what was posted above.

You buy the tablet that can't take sd card as your photography companion?
