Kojima: Do you think of him differently after Metal Gear Solid 5 ? (NO SPOILERS)

Great game designer. Good game director. Awful writer.

^ Kojima didn't write or direct Portable Ops.

His bad work on stuff post-MGS3 doesn't suddenly erase all of his work as a writer pre-MGS4 for me. Now that he's a free man again, so's to speak, I think we might see some of that old school Kojima magic again. Hopefully.

I think he did a fantastic job with MGS V
even though it clearly suffers from the open world design.

and also he wanted it to be "too big".

i would have preferred a TON of camp omega size maps and then just go from there.

MGSV is a masterpiece.

Takes everything cool/crazy/bad/good of the series from the past 20+ years and puts it into its own modern, brilliant finale.

Haters can suck it...Good luck finding Peace!

Despite being delusional fanboy how can you possibly say that with a straight face that "the plot is well written" and the infamous twist is super obvious to several key hints in the game. The gameplay is the best in the whole saga and it's extremely fun to play agreed.. But you hypnotized yourself on some Ocelot BS.

Hell the trailers gave a better story smh And we haven't even talked about how he literally spoils the entire game in trailers.

I'm not delusional. It's my opinion.

mgs v is a shitload of fun and very different from all the other mgs games in a really positive way for the most part.

The Missing Link was nonsense from narrative standpoint the game sucks, cool ideas and Skullface had so much potential but he was oh well. Gameplay wise undisputed it's the best/fun in the series.

Fucking ending twist had no lead up towards it.

No. He has always been and still is a great game director unlike any other in the industry. He's not exempt from cocking certain things up now and again either.

Except for MGS3. MGS3 is perfect in every way and I'll accept no counter-arguments.

Sublime gameplay and feels like the reverse of MGS 4

Still the best figurehead dev in the industry, even though the game has a ton of issues

Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid are masterpieces but not this one. Maybe he is running out of ideas.çımdont praise him like before after this scandal

The game part is literally Peace Walker again in more open areas.

The open world is trash and basically an interactive load screen between bases.

The less said about the fucking horrible story telling the better.

The man desperately needed an editor and people to question some of these decisions.

He's done as much bad as good, at this point. It doesn't erase his work, but it does nullify it, and considering his writing (based on his most recent works) I have a low opinion of him as a writer or story teller.

I'm actually surprised at how subtle he became with this game, tapes aside (which are very expository), specially towards the end, almost to a fault. I honestly can't think less of him when it's something that is lacking in this medium.

He is one of the greatest game designers of all time, and intermittently a good storyteller as well. MGSV didn't really change my opinion of him, but it was reassuring to see that he is firmly in the business of making video games - not movies.

As someone who purchased the limited edition PS4 and was so hyped to play the game I am greatly dissappointed.

This isnt the Metal Gear Finale I envisioned. Weak story, bland empty open world, mission based game structure, missing chapters, F2P mobile wait mechanics and motherbase insurance that actually costs money.

If this was his grand vision for Metal Gear Solid, fuck that I am out. Give me Metal gear solid 4 any day.

He needed to leave the franchise years ago. My hope is Sony Japan hire him and get him to make a new IP

I agree with all of this minus the MGS4 part and I'd like to add that the traversal is just dreadful in this game. The game should have been a bunch of Ground Zeroes style levels with a lot of diversity rather than one of the most incredibly dull and repetitive open worlds I've ever seen.

Love him and I never played a single MGS. His passion is palpable and even if some of decisions cause diverse reactions, I more or less think that's a win in his book. He gets the people talking about a franchise that's existed since '87; all the while maintaining a vision about his characters. I do believe he's wanted to be done with the series for a while and the fan demand (
outrage for some
) put more stress on him than necessary to continue the series. But no MGS is critically panned (with the exception of ACiD 2 I believe) and when he was forced back in the directing seat, he never skimped.

Sure he may have been over ambitious with MGSV. Sure, if the rumors are true, Konami were in there right to cut him off. I think they were dumb for throwing the proverbial baby out with the bathe water. But regardless I will always respect Hideo Kojima for his passion. P.T. goes a long way to show the dude still has the juice.

I really disliked how Skullface was really underused
I was hoping for a boss fight but we didn't get that unfortunately but then again, I don't see how it would be fun to fight a guy with a shotgun but knowing Kojima, he always finds a way to make something fun but it is too bad we got nothing. As far as his story goes, not sure how far he could have delved into the details but it was really not about him. The bigger picture excluded him. Maybe the whole language thing and the parasites was an influence to Zero and thus The Patriots were born and SOP system was put in place because of that otherwise his story was pretty much over.
that whole silent protagonist thing also bothered me since it gave the game a completely different feel than previous ones
You're right about giving the game a different feel but I don't see that as a negative thing to be honest since that plot point is related to Venom's identity and the fact that the latter is struggling in being the leader. Let's face it, the guy has no sense of leadership, is confused all the time and doesn't know what to say or how to react thus his silence. At one point at the beginning of the game he asks Kaz to tell him what to do just like he always did. This was probably hinting at his identity and the fact that Venom had no fucking clue what he was doing or what to do next. That's why he needed people like Kaz and Ocelot to make decisions for him and it makes perfect sense.
the real lack of a central conflict (especially considering what you learn about Cipher later on) and that there were so many loose threads and unresolved issues.
Well if you think about it, there was a central conflict and there is a common enemy but in this case, you just don't meet with that enemy and kill him, it's more of a behind the scenes type of thing and tapes but then again, some of the "unresolved" plotlines are left for the users to interpret. Remember the quote in Mission 46 about "There are no facts. Only interpretations"? Yea, Kojima doesn't want another MGS4 where everything is answered with nanomachines. I think he made the right decision to keep things mysterious and for the players to interpret. That's the fun part.
Sure you can blame it on Konami that everything isn't in there but the fact of the matter is when there became a hard Deadline Kojima should have focused on just the important bits and the conclusion.
I believe that Kojima finished the game and achieved what he always wanted to achieve. And assuming he couldn't finish the story, it's only logical that he would focus on making the gameplay awesome and polish it as much as he can rather than focus on story and deliver a broken gameplay. At the end of the day it's a game so the least you should expect is gameplay that works. A fantastic story won't make up for a broken gameplay but a fantastic gameplay can easily make up for a broken story. Not saying anything is broken in V but that's what I think.
As the game is...it doesn't feel like he concentrated on getting a good final send off or conclusion or what he felt was sufficient for the ending and plot wasn't enough for me. So eh. I think he's a good conceptual guy and can direct a good game, he just needs a good foil or counter to reign him in and keep him guided and centered.
Again, I personally think he finished the game. The title of the game is powerful. I would invest a bit more time on connecting the title with everything we, the players have experienced. Read a bit more into it, I'm sure you will be convinced. You feel it too don't you?

The open world aspect was pointless, and some of the movement was very dated - certainly for someone who is supposed to be one of the greatest soldiers of are time. One of my pet peeves in games is not being able to scale/climb up objects shin height, and the number of times this happened in this game was crazy - the real enemy in this game are slopes and wonky rock formations.

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
I feel about the same as I did after Peace Walker.

Which is perpetually disappointed.

Metal Gear 1 + 2, plus MGS 1-3, are are an incredible achievement in this medium. They are emergent, they are experimental, and they are artistic. They mark Kojima as one of gaming's greatest auteurs.

I do not feel this way about his later games. MGSV having great gameplay isn't enough for me, that's not why I ever played this series.

Oh well. It makes it easier to not be disappointed that he won't be making any more Metal Gears.

Except I feel the brilliance of MGS1-3 is best attributed to the man in his shadow, Tomokazu Fukushima.

He needs a second hand. He can't do everything by himself if anything just cause I'm tired of seeing him in every single credit.

People asked him for subtly and restraint for years. He finally gives it to us and there nothing but bitching. I agree with much of the criticism about the story but overall I loved it and thought it was wonderful how they dialed it back to focus on the sandbox gameplay that has always been the main draw for me. It's like they took everything wonderful mechanics wise from 3, 4, and peace walker and took it to the next level. I don't give all the credit to Kojima either his team is the best in the business. Also, I don't get all the talk about going over budget. For a game of this scope the budget wasn't particularly high and the dev time just wasn't that much longer than mgs2 or 4. Basically, my opinion is at an all time high. Bravo, Kojima.

He's a genius nutcase. Nothing has changed. MGSV is my goty despite the numerous flaws. The stealth game play is on another level.

Yup. He's pretty great and despite all the flaws MGSV is my GOTY too, and the gameplay is easily the best of the entire franchise.

I think part of the disappointment some MGS fans feel with V is due to the game not fulfilling certain series expectations. I felt the same way about Skyward Sword when it came out: where are the towns, and why is the world so disjointed like it's a Mario game? Eventually I put the game aside because I was so disappointed. But later I remembered just how fun the game was to play. That brought me back to the game, and I loved the rest of it.

Think about all the diehard Resident Evil fans who hated RE4 just because it was different. I'm reminded of that sometimes when I see some (but not all) of the criticism hurled at MGSV by diehard MGS fans. I'm also reminded of the insane hype trains for this game, and it seems like anyone who buys into that mentality is just asking to be disappointed when reality hits.

Yup I think he's an even better game developer than I thought, MGSV is one of the best games of the generation.

I've loved every single MGS game and V is no different.

Love him even more. Fucking gameplay is too good. Only a few games have gameplay that get me rock hard and this is one of them. Only DMC3/4 and dragon's dogma beat this game in gameplay. The rest are nowhere near.

I had a great time with MGSV. The only things that brought it down for me was the repetitive nature it had in some missions(although, MGSV had more variety than most open world games do) and the disappointing story. The cassette tapes were the wrong way to handle the more fleshed out bits in the story. Editor etc. etc. I still think Kojima is a pretty great game designer but something has to be said for knowing your limits. I'd like to see what he could do in a more condensed world such as the setting of MGS3 but expanded with this gen's technology.

Kojima really needs someone there to say "Hey man, we need to reign this in a bit". Then again, he's probably gotten too big for that.

I have not used cocaine
The game would be a bargain at $200.

Rising had a spectacular story that achieved everything it set out to do. (One of those things was to make you laugh.) It was perfectly paced, too. Rising, and the characters in it, will be remembered for a long time and are often still quoted here on GAF. MGS V had an appalling story that wasn't finished, wasn't engaging, had dull, boring characters, was shockingly poorly paced and ultimately pissed everyone off.

I'm not sure I'd go all the way to saying it has a spectacular story but I agree with the sentiment. The Armstrong cutscenes alone are more entertaining than anything in MGSV. And by entertaining I just mean it made me feel something (i.e. in this case it made me laugh my ass off). MGSV has maybe 2 scenes that actually achieved that - Mission
43
(and even then it could have been a lot more impactful with proper build up) and the end of the
Paz quest line (I could see it coming from miles away but I still felt a bit empty afterwards for some reason)
. All the rest... Was boring at worst and unremarkable at best. Well... I guess
"such a lust for revenge"
was fun to hear but I'm not sure that was intended.

I read this was Kojima's last MGS and not because he is out of Konami but he does not want to do a similar game anymore.

Konami is moving from AAA games in the short term and possible for years so this leave a hole in the industry since there is not a game similar to MGS, Spliter Cell was compared at the PS2 era but just for the stealth similarities.

There is not a game series that can replace MGS , you can choose between Forza and Need For Speed or DriveClub , or Dragon Age and Witcher or Elders Scrolls and even Fallout.

But you can not compare MGS V with anything , that is the great job Kojima did and is sad there is nothing similar in the future from him or other developer

Speak for yourself. You don't know how well I write in a narrative sense.

I'm sorry. I'm sure you're a great writer but I was talking about his creativity on the gameplay side. I certainly am not going to defend Kojima-san's writing. I gave up on that by the end of MGS2.

I've played 117 hours and I'm still halfway through the game. I'm assuming 200h total without completing all the side ops, at this rate. I stand by my words.

Depends, OP. Did you think less of M Night Shyamalan after The Happening?

Imdb said that movie sucked so I didn't watch it.

Not really. MGSV just proves what I guess we've always thought about him.

Dude takes a lot of money and time to achieve his perfect idea.

He had but one of those for MGSV.

I already thought he was a hack writer after MGS4, so I guess I don't think of him any differently now.
