This topic poses a quandary, maybe worthy of its own thread (if not already done)

Is it viable to see a current video game company still making games in 100 years?

Obviously some of these companies have already been around for well over a 100 years, but who do y'all feel would be the last man standing?

I feel Nintendo has the best chance IMO.

Obsidian's quote would be nice if they were an indie developer, but they are owned by the biggest publisher in the world. And Avowed follows the same trend of studios owned by the biggest publisher in the world: they tend to get worse or remain stagnant. So, this "secret Weapon" stinks of the same old fairy tale of any studio owned by The Biggest Publisher of the World.

'expertise'? 'masters'? they list 2 games, one of which sold well enough, & the other of which hasn't even been officially released, & this guy's using words like 'expertise' & 'masters'? smh...
Yeah. True "expertise" and "mastery" would be something close to what Rockstar (from GTA to RDR, with Bully, Max Payne and L.A. Noire in between), Naughty Dog (from Uncharted to The Last Of Us and now Intergalactic) or CD Projekt RED (from The Witcher to Cyberpunk) do -- while selling tens of millions of copies and having real pop culture penetration through their works.

O onQ123 get your vote in now. Screen shot it. If you guess correctly you can quote yourself in a hundred years.

Trust me, he won't wait. A year from now he'll make an obscure connection to this topic for another excuse to jerk himself off. Quite frankly, I admire the dedication. Pretty rare these days to find someone putting in so much effort to give an air of legitimacy to their sexual self-satisfaction. Here I am just doing it at random with no sense of accomplishment. This guy is putting in a 9 to 5 just to hang a medal off his nuts.

Okay? Only ten thousand people were willing to opt in on the pre-order for their triple A game that cost tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars.
Pre-order of a special expensive edition, not the normal pre order.

And to the topic . I hope so but video game company are normally have a short life. On big miss and it can be over.

The media desperately tries to push western games now because they frankly kind of suck for numerous reasons. They'll hold on to every straw. Finding the way to success again starts with acceptance. This is not aimed at Obsidian per se, but accept your product is mid, and infested with DEI shit. And that consumers run away from your current philosophy. Reset and change.

Why is the trailer of Tides of Annihilation met with overwhelming positive comments? Because like Wukong and Stellar Blade it doesn't deal with any of that shit and the creators obviously design the characters they like, it isn't under review by some frustrated wokies who failed in society.

Great post

A lot of these American websites benefited from the rise of America’s game industry in the latter half of the 00s

Now that industry’s sinking they’re going down with the ship.

Isn't Avowed still in paid early access? I heard the game is good aside from the game breaking bugs. Might wait for a substantial patch before I play on Gamepass. But yeah, Stalker 2 was so much fun even with the bugs, no doubt the same could be said for Avowed.

As for Obsidian, I like them. I want a Grounded 2.

Tell us you haven’t played with game without telling us you haven’t played the game.

Ive played pillars that the world is set on. Much better games. Tried this on pc game pass and it my impression matched up some of the credible reviews I saw. Would you pay full price for this if it weren't on game pass? Probably not. As seen by the steam numbers.

And for those trying to downplay steam numbers because it's on gamepass.. pc gaming market has rejected the shitty windows store. They have shown time and time again they will buy food games on steam even if its on game pass

KOTOR2
Alpha Protocol
NWN2
FALLOUT: NEW VEGAS
POE 1 & 2

If we want to include the Black Isle days, then include Fallout 1 & 2 and Icewind Dale 1 & 2 and Planescape.

Are we seriously at the stage of Xbox Derangement Syndrome that we're doing mental gymnastics to pretend that Obsidian isn't one of the best RPG developers in the world?

Obsidian is by far the best and most profitable studio of Xbox. They're the Insomniac of Xbox.

Since their purchase, in 2018, they have published three new games for Xbox, with the fourth releasing this year.

Grounded was a huge hit for its budget, Pentiment was a critical hit (and didn't cost a lot of money) and Avowed seems great too. It doesn't sell like hot cakes now, but I think it will do fine in the long run.

Honestly, between all Xbox studios, which one did better?

Halo Infinite was a complete and costly failure, Gears 5 too (but didn't cost as much as Halo Infinite), Starfield was the worst rated BGS single player game, Redfall was terrible, Hellblade 2 didn't sell at all, Compulsion Games, Double Fine, inXile, Undead Labs haven't publish an all new game since their purchase, The Initiative still isn't ready, the next game from Rare is in development hell...

Playground was the best studio of Xbox for years, but that was before Fable. We'll see if it launchs this year, but I doubt it will have half the success of Avowed or The Outer Worlds 2.

Double Fine released Psychonauts 2, which MS was the publisher on even before they were purchased.
True, but the development of the game has started before and the game has been released everywhere. I didn't count The Outer Worlds for Obsidian for the same reason.

MS purchased Double Fine in 2019, Psychonauts 2 was released in 2021. At the time the only reason a PS4 port was produced was to fulfill a Kickstarter tier promise. They didn't produce a PS5 port.

No, this is really too harsh:
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
Neverwinter Nights 2
Fallout: New Vegas
Tyranny
Pillars of Eternity 1-2
But then, yes, they went downhill...
They fired Chris Avellone and let the blue hairs run the show.

This is exactly right. Although, I must give credit to Pentiment, it was a good game from what I played so far.
