Kotaku: We asked 3 questions to Sony about DRM and Used Games

I'm not arguing if you caused a mild scene or not. But a corporation isn't held hostage by tweets. If this happens it happens, twitter can't possibly affect such a huge decision. And anyone from Sony who implies otherwise is just being polite.

Sufficiently large public backlash and media attention can hurt sales of a product. That might not sit well with you if you're the type that resents consumers "dictating terms" to corporations rather than just buying what they're selling and being grateful ("Thank you, o great Corporation, for making your Goods available to lowly souls such as us!"), but that's the way it goes - and the way it should go, in a healthy market.

yet i've never seen so many people rally around a policy of withholding information.

GAF mocks stupidity. This is a stupid article. GAF mocks and shows the lack of sense and silliness of the article. This is the only thing people are rallying around.

This question has been asked and answered in the past thousands of times. I am all for questions being asked but don't make it a big deal when a company doesn't answer and then try to make it into a thing.

Maybe if they got other questions answered and this was just a small stab that went unanswered or deflected. Perhaps a visual cue that maybe someone is hiding something like... "He blushed and smiled and said no comment when answering this important question"

Kataku has absolutely nothing here... Its not worth us even having a thread about it.

I was interested in how they would answer these straightforward questions. It's true that we didn't get anything new out of the answers but I think people like to be up to date with what the latest word is. So they're sticking by their original statements and aren't willing to clarify any further. I still think that's worth noting. Especially with all the recent twitter noise and talk of policies being reviewed.

Thanks for asking Kotaku, I appreciate the effort even though we didn't get anything cleared up.

At least the effort shows interest, and perhaps that interest will sway Sony towards a more favorable position.

2) Will games need to be registered online in order to use them the first time out?

UPDATE: Question #2 actually had been answered by Sony. And we'd reported it: "At a roundtable this morning, Sony's game studios chief, Shuhei Yoshida, told reporters that any requirement for users to register a game online in order to play it would be left to game publishers. Sony won't require that." (Emphasis added.) Apologies for missing that during our attempts to clarify just how similar or dissimilar Sony's next-gen policies are from Microsoft's.
Update

Good on Kotaku for asking the questions.

I personally believe Sony are waiting for E3 to announcement they AREN'T enforcing draconian DRM. I think we would have heard by now if this wasn't the case.

My guess is Sony will have a very similar system to MS for used games. Sony did a great tactical move though : they let MS break the bad news and now they're letting them have all the bad press as long as they can. I can't see how publishers would act differently on each system.

If they don't answer it's that they have some similar policies. Maybe not as restrictive but it's here.
Now I'm 100% sure Nintendo didn't get that much third party support because of this. So I know announce that I'll never buy an EA game : NEVER !

Does someone have an idea of the other publishers who could have pressurize MS and Sony for this?
Activision maybe?

Sounds like the rep asked a higher up and was told to shut up.

What we know so far though is that PS4 wont require a internet connection at all.
Can play used games but no more clarification than that.
Yoshida and Shahid were joking around with the DRM on twitter.
Playstation guys on Twitter tweeting positive stuff about their fans.

I am cautiously optimistic.

I doubt it. Activision has been pretty chill about used games in the past.

I guess if it's like "online activation" and it's not mandatory I will make my list pretty easily.
Like said a thousand times, this E3 is going to be epic.

I'm sure a lot of PS4 fans and Xbox One bashers will go the other way with Sony saying that "it's different".

PS4 was a "maybe" for me but if there is similar things applied I'll stick Wii U only... and I'll buy a 360 to play the games I missed on this system (Fez, Trials HD, Forza, Crackdown, Alan Wake...) while ending my PS3 backlog.

If the PS4 never needs the internet, then they can never require it for DRM and games can never be tied to an account or console, correct? If this is true, I don't see how they can block used game sales unless it is just more online passes for MP, which of course requires a connection.

For DD version of retail game I'm sure the 3rd parties could do a online check, this is possible now on the PS3.

Michael Denny confirmed the day the PS4 was revealed that it wouldn't need a internet connection so unless he was lying, it is true. :)

But yeah, for it to work like Microsoft is doing on Xbone you are required to have a internet connection, it's not always required but at some point it have to get online to check in.

Yoshida seem to have confirmed though that it's up to the publishers but I doubt they will do it. Microsoft have set everything up for them, will they set up something similar themselves just to do it on PS4? I have a hard time seeing that since putting a system like that in place have to cost something and would it profit them enough vs having used games allowed?

I'm guessing EA probably tried to push Sony to do what MS is doing but couldn't get it through and thought "fine, one is better than no one" and gives MS some extra stuff in their games.

Most of them?

EA, Activsion, Ubisoft, Warner Bros, THQ, Konami Tecmo, Codemasters, Namco, and even Sony all use (or have used) online passes in at least some of their games.

Building it into the system seems like a natural evolution and was probably the number one request from publishers.

If they leave it up to them then most will use it,still not good.

Yeah but if a publisher require it I can just boycott that game but the way I'm thinking about it is that Sony haven't set anything up (I think) for publishers to use like MS have, so they will have to do it themselves and yeah EA might do it but I don't see the smaller publishers doing it. I could be wrong of course but that's what I think right now.

Absolutely, I think Nintendo could win this show... (bring on the hate comments)

The only way they could win the show (at least for me personally) is to lower the price on the Wii U, release the white premium model here in europe, release Metroid Prime 4 (developed by Retro) and release a Zelda game that looks like the Zelda tech demo.

Done.

I really don't think so. Some will try, but will soon realize it doesn't do anything at all. I can't see Acti and Ubisoft sticking with it. Maybe EA and Bethesda will, but I think most will not use it at all or drop it after a while.

That's the only thing we can hope for. Sony is not going to forbid it completely. That's out of the question. Since it is possible on PS3 already. Sony is not going to take options away from publishers, which they had on PS3.

Prince has been lowered already... in the UK anyway. As for the games, you ask for too much :P what about smash bros and mario 3d?

Lol at this non-response. Basically stating, we don't know what we will do, but at least we are not confusing everyone like MS with mixed messages.

It's still £299.99 for the premium at most places in the UK, so I don't think there's been an official price drop.

I'm hoping for a substantial price drop at E3, and I'm sure they have plenty of cool looking games to show off.

ME too!

However, I would like some definitive answer already.
