Why are we always talking about Sony and Microsoft in the console war when Nintendo is the only clear winner?

Vita was a misguided device on a lot of levels (way too high BOM, the device had an OLED screen!), and it was a different environment.

People want to view this new Switch like it's 2018, but the environment is not the same at all. People have and will get more options.

We're in the different environment where Sony doesn't have any portable handheld

I think Nintendo owes a lot of their current success to catering to their current fans but also being that second console purchase for most other gamers. Nintendo has embraced not being part of the console war and it has allowed them to still be liked by Sony, Microsoft and PC fans. I do not know if they plan to change that strategy going into the Switch 2 but it has worked up until now.

Nintendo have been doing their own thing for years and generations. Their market and user base doesn't really overlap with PlayStation or Xbox's.

They could launch a console any time and not affect sales of one another.

Whereas Sony and Microsoft are direct competitors to one another in the console space. With users with similar buying habits and interest in games. That may change with Switch 2 as they'd get more third party support and with Xbox slowly dying - as console sales and interests go. Which may lead some users to move to one platform, if previous Xbox owners haven't bought a PS already.

And we are in an environment where Steam has a handheld, Xbox will have a handheld, Lenovo/Asus/etc will have handhelds. Maybe even Sony will have a handheld.

Add in the more niche emulation handhelds from like Retroid and whatever you can get AliExpress etc, and the consumer has a massive glut of choices now.

It's very telling that Nintendo had to make a massive price cut to retain its JPN audience, they must be in the red or at cost on that.

They are also talking resolution and fps for the first time ever. It is my opinion that a Nintendo that enters the specs race is a Nintendo that can be beaten imo.

They are changing it.

Switch 2 is clearly being positioned as a main console for people, with a whopping %50 price increase vs Switch 1 (base version to base version).

Because they made pretty clear terminally online, obsessed with graphics, specs, mature themes, western focused gamers aren't their main audience.

It's like a gorgeous girl that ditched you a long time ago thinking you would become a loser and you decided to bad mouth her instead of trying to become the good enough for her.

As far as I can see Mario Kart World at $80 is the most expensive game.

Bullshit rumours on social media have taken over the facts though.

It's £75 in the UK which is only £5 more than I paid for FFXIV
It's the (not so) new way to try to take down brands, diffuse hype etc. sad, pathetic tactic by brand boys.

Because SIE and Microsoft Gaming account for 87% of consumer spending.

Their revenues reflect that NSW sold 150m as a secondary console.

Secondary consoles tend to have lower ARPU and lower costumer retention.

The question is: Where does Nintendo fit in todays landscape; a world with less disposable income, less free time, higher prices, a wider array of entertainment options, and GTA 6 looming.

Can consumers afford a secondary console ?

Because it's a console war, not a handheld war.
This.
I couldn't care less about units sold , I play what I like, end of story. After experiencing Forza Horizon 5 on my Xbox Series X, I wouldn't even touch a game like Mario Kart. Who's the winner here ? Well, Mario Kart is garbage to me , I'd take FH5 any day of the week. So who wins? A glorified toaster of a handheld or a real home console beast ? The only real winner is your personal taste. Deal with it.

Source for this?

Last time I checked Nintendo was killing it.

Well. Microsoft is a clear looser. They lost a console war.
And yes, Nintendo sells better at hardware than Sony. They are more confident with their output.

It's a good question. Do they have a console for the lounge anymore.

Portable units compete with phones

Nintendo is a separate market, just look at the games and their catalog in general compared to Sony and Microsoft, which except for the exclusives are virtually identical.
PlayStation clearly don't think so, they are sending out survey asking about the Nintendo Switch 2 and its impact after the console unveiling:

PS1 > N64
PS2 > GC
PS4 > Wii U

PS4+PS5 > Switch
NDS > PSP
WII > PS3
3DS > PSV
NSW > PS4

Which country?
Philippines.

For example, $60 games used to be sold for 2500 pesos. Now, it's at 3000. Now imagine $70 and $80 games.

Completely ridiculous.

The only exception to this was steam but someone here raised a stink and now they're increasing prices as well.

Backlog gaming has never been been this enticing.

Nintendo had three home console failures in its history.

Nintendo 64 - 33m solds
Gamecube - 22m solds

Playstation - 102m solds
Playstation 2 - 155m solds
Playstation 3 - 85m solds
Playstation 4 - 117m solds
Playstation 5 - 75m solds till today- will sell more than 100m for sure.

Wait, so is the Switch a PS4 gen console or a PS5 gen console?
It's a Gen 9 console for sure with a 3+ year headstart on the PS5 and XSX.

Like the WiiU was a Gen 8 system that launched before PS4.

I think Nintendo desperately needed the switch to come out soon because the writing was on the wall with the WiiU after 12 months.

Rumor has it Sony is looking into their own handheld so this probably has more to do with that then anything else.

Your replies and posts are a magnificent display of your undying love for the holy Nintendo toaster and your IQ that's bravely battling absolute zero. You basically agreed with me without even realizing it , probably because, instead of a brain, you've got a peanut rattling around in there. In the end, you just confirmed it's all a matter of taste, that there's no true winner or almighty overlord , just plain ol' personal preference. Bravo, Sherlock.

From your very first reply, it's crystal clear you're a fanboy , so drop the act, stop pretending to be all edgy and wise, and quit fishing for likes from your fellow keyboard crusaders.

Gotten to

Nintendo is winning a game that Sony and Microsoft didn't even realize they are playing.

Look at what Nintendo has built up over 40 years. They built a platform and brand that let them branch out into things like theme parks logically. Meanwhile Sony and MS worked to torch their platforms by porting their games everywhere to scrounge up some quick cash.

The idea that Nintendo are not really in direct competition with the rest because they've carved out their own niche (hybrid consoles) is just nonsense.

Every company competes for your time and money. If it's going to Nintendo when it could've gone to Sony, that's literally the definition of competition.

Nintendo isn't making a powerful console (apple) they make a "toy" (orange) which handles their games perfectly fine but incapable of handling todays biggest games

You can enjoy apples or oranges or both. But they are simply not the same thing

Nintendo competes against Sony/MS like Roku boxes compete against Sony/ms
