Lack of PS5 Pro shortages means some scalpers are re-selling at a loss

Why are people so obsessed with freaking out over scalping? It is a minor issue and always has been. Millions of consoles are sold at launch and a few thousand are scalped. Any person trying to make money on the Pro would have watched it, seen that it was still available and cancelled.

If people are seeing these things auctioning and selling for less than retail what they are seeing is extreme ignorance.

Scalping only seems bad because it is hard to get high demand items and seeing a few hundred on ebay that take days to sell somehow looks bigger than it is. If scalping was illegal, it would still be extremely hard to get the hard to find things. Why shouldn't someone who generally can't make enough money another way exploit people who are well enough off to pay nearly 2x for something that is hard to get? Because you couldn't get one? FFS we all go through this shit. Sometimes we get lucky and get a preorder in, other times we are waiting for daily drops and losing our minds for weeks. Eliminating scalpers would not make that go away.

I don't understand why they wouldn't just return them to the retailer if they can't sell them for profit?

That would be weird since you can return it almost anywhere within 30 days for free basically. I checked Ebay and the best i could find was one guy selling it for like $5 more then I would pay. That's including tax.

While there remain a handful of sellers trying to sell the console at a profit, eBay UK currently has numerous sellers listing the £700 console for less than its retail price.

A number of sellers currently have Buy It Now consoles on sale for £680-£700, while others have auctions currently sitting between £510 and £670 – while these auctions will likely rise before they end, it seems less likely that they will surpass the console's £700 retail price.

Sony is scalping it themselves.

As funny as it is true that covid fiasco assures all hardware will launch expensive as hell now Sony Microsoft and Nintendo would be idiots to allow scalpers to profit double or triple at their dime they know people especially early enthusiasts will pay the premium

Why would they resell it when they can just return for a refund tho?
Exactly. Nobody is selling these with a loss, even if it's lower than the 700£. There are always ways to get things cheaper for example with cashback or discounted voucher. In Germany the price is 799 Euro everywhere, but with corporate benfits coupons you can get it for 659 Euro.

What a dumb article. Nobody is going to sell a new item at a loss on ebay when they can just return the thing. Lower prices are probably just scams. They will just mail you bricks.

As awesome as this is the damage from 2020 is done, Sony and Microsoft lost millions that went into scalpers pockets they won't let that happen again probably why Nintendo hasn't unveiled either expect nothing short of ps5pro prices going forward

I would be the last person to admit this but the pro is really for the hardcore gamers.

I think the pro is a solid machine and will for sure provide many hours of high quality gaming for the next 4 years but only people with large screens will see the benefits so its a hard sell vs the ps4 pro.

What loss? As far as i know UK still has the same right of withdrawal for online orders for 14 days as the EU and any scalper with a brain would have known that this thing is far away from being scalpable, it was availabale all the time.
Yeah the story doesn't make sense. The scalpers could return it without any loss since it's only been 3 days since it was shipped and it would be sealed. It's more likely that the £680-700 sellers are using some arbitrage with some discount somewhere (maybe Very's 20%) and aren't taking a loss. Good to see them not making much though and having to sell at RRP.

Shortages have been solved by Sony since the beginning of 2023, I don't how someone expects the new systems to have low inventory, even the scalpers.

They still have them in store at Best Buy. Almost bought one but got a new iPad instead. traded in my old small iPad for a 13 inch one.
Maybe some other time.

Counter point:

Make scalping punishable by imprisonment like war profiteering

They'll probably return them. They have time to see how it pans but right now these aren't worth reselling. Should have been obvious from early on. The 30th Edition though...

Sadly the scalpers are having their way with the disk drive. I just hope people aren't in a rush to get one, spend the extra money on digital games and buy it when it's available.

What I don't understand is, the console was readily available up until launch day, if you ordered a bunch on pre order release and you can see the take up is not as strong from the availability, why the fuck would you still buy them?

How can someone sell for a loss? Just refund it..... unless the place they bought it from (online) doesn't accept refunds or charges shipping fees back.

Were close to being able to snag one. I have a stock tracker on for them and it popped up 4 times today but I didn't try for it. Getting a drive isn't far off at all.
