Her appearance in the Cloud Atlas video made me think about one thing:

Is there a consensus way to deal with your voice when becoming a woman at a later point in life? Because the way she just tries to speak at a higher pitch is kind of jarring.

Are there other ways to get over that? Does the voice not change when you undergo hormone treatment?

Because it's not accurate. He had a sex change, she didn't, saying she had a sex change implies she is now a he, to me at least.
Well that sounds like something you can easily fix.

I don't really see the point in acting as if she wasn't male, I don't think that could upset her, it's not a secret.

It’s disrespectful.

Modesty becomes a woman
only if said poster has shitty opinions.

It's incredibly ironic that some people don't see the hypocrisy in chastising other people for not agreeing with them or having an open mind/being progressive.

Like, "Let people do and think what they want, but if you don't think so too then fuck you!"

Well that's an entire can of worms, isn't it? At what point are you to be called a woman? What makes someone a woman? Is it which gender the person identifies with or is it what you're born with? Can someone really change their outward and to an extent inward form and change their gender? In any case, good for Lana.

No

At what point are you to be called a woman?
At the point they identify as one

What makes someone a woman?
Their brain

Is it which gender the person identifies with or is it what you're born with?
Both, since gender is the brain, not the rest of the body

Can someone really change their outward and to an extent inward form and change their gender?

Gender is not changeable. Primary and secondary sexual characteristics are.

lol, this pronoun stuff pops up in EVERY thread about transgenders

and its always treated the same way. BAN BAN BAN BAN screams instead of trying to say hey this is why you shouldnt say A or B.

When have women ever been referred to as "he" or "him"?

She looks pretty good if you ask me, the fuchsia dreadlocks are a bit out there, but I think she rocks it pretty well.

This thread is mostly GAF judging and policing a womans appearance, which is probably happening in 39 of the other 40 threads on the front page.

While there ARE surgeries, most people go with Voice Therapy since the surgery is risky and not that good
It is impressive what a human can do with their voice with a little training

Example 1 - Cisgender Male singing boith voices in Aladdin's A Whole New World

Example 2 - Transexual Singer at "Thailand's Got Talent" singing with both her female voice and her male voice

Be honest GAF.

Doesn't look much different than any other middle-aged woman I've ever seen. I hope she feels more comfortable now.

You don't understand why people don't like slurs, regardless of the person's intentions?

This picture? uhh I can explain really!
I'll be honest... I honestly forgot that she was Larry previously. /shrug I guess I've known her as Lana for so long that I never really saw her as anything but that. Also, while I do understand the reason behind the need to publicize it, I can't but FEEL like we should be way passed caring about whether someone was born something or not. I doubt anyone in this thread is going to actually have any sort of relations with her, so I'm not sure why any of us should care. That's my thoughts on the matter.

Remember that a large part of GAF thinks that anyone who's not a supermodel with a flawless face and body is gross.

By that standard, she is gross.

I don't personally feel that way, as I am attracted to many women that don't stack up to that standard. But even then, there are those who I don't find attractive... Lana being one of them.

In that pic with the blonde hair, I wouldn't have been able to tell she was transgendered, but I would still have found her unattractive. Someone else might be attracted to her, but I wouldn[t have been. We are all free to consider others unattractive... and vice versa.

I can understand this viewpoint, but I'm glad that there are more well-known, well-respected transgendered people in the public eye, if only so they can serve as role models and hope to others.

Typically when they were born with a Y chromosome. It's disingenuous to act like everyone is on the exact same page with this issue. It's pretty complex.

It's not complex, and if you aren't on the same page you're likely a bigot. At the very least you shouldn't feel compelled to share your opinion without any prompting.

Here’s a primer: Trans women are women so you use feminine pronouns. Trans men are men so you use masculine pronouns.

GAF is not inclusive of a lot of things :p
Bigots of various types are in that category.

Let's define personal preference and bigotry please.

If someone has personal preferences against a lifestyle that does not mean the same thing as bigoted. The worst goddamn conflation of definitions I've ever seen.

I'm pretty much of the same mind.

I just make the mistakes of reading comments made on the various news sites reporting the story and get really worked up really fast. I don't know why I'm still so surprised at the level of blatant bigotry that's still openly tolerated in most circles concerning anything having to do with GLBT people or issues.

Still a long way to go unfortunately.

This is the same view people take to say gay people are "gross", and before you say they don't have a choice like trans people getting operatons gay people choose to act on their feelings.

Considering scientific, medical and even antropological views (or whatever you want to call the group of studies that fits Gender Studies) on the issue, no it is pretty simple.

Are you a Creationist ?

nobody cares about your 'personal perferences against a lifestyle' is the issue. you might just want to scroll away. and i'm not saying that in a glib manner. i'm saving an accounts life!

Fair enough, but it's not like you can actually express that personal preference without coming of as a bigot.
People are free to hold these opinions, and even express them to a degree, but once you start to throw in words like "gross" when speaking of a transgendered woman (might have just been the looks, but it read like a reference to her status as a transgendered woman) you've kinda crossed the line from the expression of a personal preference into bigotry.

Saying that a sex change is gross is debatable, but as we're dealing with a relatively powerless group I'm guessing the mods are extra harsh in order to deter potential bigoted speech on the forums.

Good for her. Wondering how long she struggled with this.

probably since she was a little kid, from what I've read about the experiences of others.

regardless of her sexual organs, i'm hoping cloud atlas turns out well. good sci fi is hard to come by.

Regardless of your views on the issue, I don't know any trans individual who would like their situation labeled "simple". With all due respect (I can tell you mean well), that's really naive.

The situation is not simple, but every view on the subject on what gender trans people have is pretty simple, specialy comparing the scientific views on terraforming and universe expansion and ther things related to the life on earth.

On a side note... While there's a fuckload more work to do, GAF has got noticeably more tolerant in the last few years.

i don't think this is really true. what i think has really happened is that mods have cracked down on those who openly express bigoted views. people are just afraid to lose their accounts, so they really tone down their remarks or just keep them to themselves.

I remember V for Vendetta being marketed as written by "The Wachowskis" rather than "The Wachowski Brothers" here circa 2004 due to the whole gender re-assignment. So it's definitely old news.
