Last Resort Season One |OT| From the creator of The Shield and Terriers

Maybe I'm just tired of serialized television where every episode has to end on a stupid twist because they need to stretch a series out for 20+ episodes. But between this show and Homeland, I'm not even sure if American producers can sustain 13 episodes without heading into Lost territory.

I don't know. for shows like this, 666 Park Avenue, Alcatraz the format just doesn't work period.
but there are numerous shows were that actually makes the series better imo.

Even Awake had to go into crazy land in its last episode, just because it could. :p

I think Terriers is the last pure 13 episode series that just works as a complete thing and never really fucks up anything too bad. Of course, I haven't watched every TV show made since then...

Ah, there's your problem!

Also, is ABC going to burn off episodes through the holidays, or are they actually going to air episodes in January?

They're going to air the final three episodes in January. 10, 17, 24.

I thought Chaplin was about beat down Shepard for a sec.

I predict XO is going to kill Chaplin right before everybody serving on the Colorado charges for treason are dropped

Missed half the episode, so I had no idea why XO was off the boat. lol
At this point, I'm just curious to see if they could wrap this up in any meaningful way or if it will end on a massive cliffhanger.

Also, I missed these posts:

Well, I suppose the one weird thing is that no American shows are made to only last a single season so inevitably we're dealing with cancelled shows... but even with shows that have single season arcs, it's still pretty sketchy. Treme is still the best at all.

I still watch quite a bit of American TV though. :p

And I guess January is still the burn off month, despite all those changes. I'm surprised they didn't burn these off during the holidays.

Eh, I'm sort of glad the show is ending. Even though last night's episode was one of the "good" ones, it was still pretty mediocre.

They've confirmed that they're going to wrap everything up with a series finale bow, so I don't see them ending with a cliffhanger.

yea i don't see how this show could have worked past 1 season without some major filler episodes. can't wait to see the coup, I actually hope they show something, as most of the show is on island, we've barely seen any of DC or whatever else is going on in the US

Yeah, I feel the same way. There's some potential in the concept, but they're just not getting there. I had a tough time taking mopey Sam seriously this week.

Yeah, but a lot of the reviewers have pointed out that they were already close to wrapping their final episodes.

I guess what I mean is that the last five minutes will be a tacked on finale, but that there will still be some crazy cliffhanger right at the end just because they couldn't figure out a way to essentially write off what amounts to a massive government conspiracy. Maybe the Captain gets shot just as he is about to return to America or something. lol

They really aren't. I expected so much more from this show.

Hm, well, I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Edit: I'm guessing the CEO guy is gonna try to catch them off guard and he'll end up at/near the top?

I don't know anymore when he asked about the flash drive and Kylie said she did not have it, and he was like how unfortunate. I think he made a deal to save his daughter from the failed coup, he had to secure the flash drive. Now that he does not have it I think he might blow up air force one to protect his daughter.

Finally got interesting. If the show had more than one season i think it would have been more interesting to see the coup succeed. The 1 season though it made more sense for it to fail.

1 episode left to tie it all togeather.

Hypothetical Season 2 based on Coup Success. China wanting the Island makes its move now that the US is in full turmoil with an overthrown government etc. Still hard to figure out how to expand it because it would play out practically the same with Sub forced to be there trying to defend Island now against Chinese.

There were far too many crosses/double crosses/secret alliances in last night's episode. Things got too confusing and complicated.

No, I see it as he was the one that found out about the coup, since they used the family equipment for communication, and he told the president in return for a top spot.

The flash drive would have been what would have saved the daughter, but since she doesnt have it, it's unfortunate she is disposable.

Didn't he tell her that her name wasn't on the list before or after he asked for the flash drive?

I kind of figured...her name isn't on the list, but now that the flash drive is there, it will implicate her, so she's screwed and he's either cutting his losses or will get rid of her himself.

Or hes the big bad guy, and the entire war was his idea because his company would benefit the most.

Yeah, this has been running off the rails towards the end here. It's too bad, but I'll check out the finale next week to see how they resolve everything.

I'm on episode 4 at the moment (no spoilers!) and what's going on in the US is being glossed over. The US gov's casus belli for nuking Pakistan was that they sunk the Colorado unprovoked. It got changed later to them giving nukes to terrorists but surely the obvious change in story (along with the Colorado claiming a US ship tried to sink them) blows a massive hole in their scheme in the outside world's eyes. Do they ever address this?

They do, sort of. The focus is on the sub, all the DC stuff is a sideplot.

I hope we get a decent ending since they had time to rewrite it.

They could allways make that attempt to take the sub by force fail pretty quickly.

Well... given that they had like two episodes to wrap everything up, I suppose it could have been much more of a mess. As it stands, the show just kind of ends.

I don't know how I feel about this show. It had a lot of promise, but the need to obfuscate and do the same old tricks that serialized television does (the wife gets kidnapped for no reason just to create a cliffhanger!) probably hurt it more than it helped it.

I'm also saddened that somehow that show about losing power (so forgettable that I can't even remember its name) is more popular, but then again, that show is so generically inoffensive that I can see why people would want to watch it.

In terms of Shawn Ryan... he still hasn't even come close to Terriers and maybe he never will. But, I guess I'm all in whatever project he launches next.

Edit: Maybe this is a spoiler, but there's a good "deal with it" gif that someone could make with the last scene anyway. lol

Loooool at the captain and XO arguing over who's crazier.

Edit: I liked the end quite a bit, but I wish it would keep going haha.

Also... I dunno if it's because it was hard to follow or if I wasn't paying enough attention, but I still don't really know who was on who's side in the presidential assassination/overthrow plot and all that. Haha.

I think the whole point with Kylie was to kill her boyfriend (also a conspirator) to get into the good books with the President and company, since her father is also (supposedly) in cahoots. Or that he was also running another conspiracy from under them, or something. It was weird because he was on the phone then it was someone else after that. Either way, killing him ensured her loyalty and let her waltz into the party at the end and gun down the president.

Was thinking the same thing while watching it, though it'd be a bit long. But still good.

Yeah, I got that... I dunno, something wasn't clicking there for me haha. I dunno if her dad was in on it, or what.

Also, is it bad that I didn't even realize who her boyfriend was? lol I was like, why are they crying, what's going on, who is this, I don't even...

Considering the cancellation, that was a decent finale. I really couldn't see this show lasting a full season though unless they really dragged it out

i enjoyed the finale, understandably it was very rushed in areas, but overall i nice wrap up. i think this show would have been served well by having 2 seasons or at least 1.5, seeing as where they were going, some of the story lines and resolutions in the finale would have been even better with a little more development. overall it was a good watch, had it's up and downs but overall a solid show.

Ended up as quite a pile of horseshit. All their worries would have been solved if they'd just youtubed the damned cam footage.

The finale was pretty good, up until the last 15 minutes or so, when it sort of just...ended. I was disappointed that, outside of the assassination of the President, there weren't any "HOLY SHIT" moments akin to the launching of the nuke in the pilot. But I am glad that everything was wrapped up with no lingering plot lines.

Last Resort was a show with very ambitious goals, but overall I think the show was pretty mediocre and never came close to reaching its potential. While I'd heartily recommend a bunch of one season "cancelled before their time series", I'm afraid to say that Last Resort isn't one of them.

Looks like I was right.

According to the writers, that was the plan

but we had decided that the president was mostly unhinged and was being operated by those around him, primarily Kylie’s father, who was positioning himself to take over the reins. So as we moved into the second part of our season, we were going to see a president more and more sidelined with his own mental illness while the Currys and the Barton Sinclairs of the world manipulated him and manipulated the power of the presidency for their own ends.
