The guy wasn't last hitting at all, kept hanging back far too much, and constantly ran away when opposing champions weren't even in range to attempt anything. Whenever I got a snare and tried to follow up with Ws and ultis, he was really far away and didn't even try to walk towards the opponents to hit them, ever. Late game he even went to kill some jungle mobs (answering he needed the gold when I asked him what in the world he was doing), and almost got himself killed by some treefolk mob that was too much for him to handle. He ended up 0/13/1, but at first the one doing the feeding was actually me until I stopped hoping he'd ever try to fight alongside me and pretended I was soloing bottom as a support.

yeah he was straight up bad.

That Alt-Tab thing just reminded me... does anyone have problems with the game screwing up their computer's graphics on the Mac version

I got stuttering audio once which was annoying but bearable, but it's been three times already where the game kills my screen (even if it Command-Tab out of it, I see a black screen with a single red line in it). When that happens, I have to close and reopen the notebook over and over until it decides to stop shutting the screen off, but even then there's a bit of flickering every now and then during the game, and once the game's over and it goes back to desktop the screen dies again and I'm forced to reset the machine.

Pancakes

hot, steaming, as melted butter slips into the cracks, drizzled with sticky sweet syrup OH GOD
Supports that build full AP and aren't Brand, Annie, or Vel'Koz make me sad.

Look I don't care if they're NOT building armor or defensive items, just get penetration as your 3rd item and watch them blow up like fireworks.

I go AP Zyra and I don't care.

So I'm trying to do those group picks http://pickem.euw.lolesports.com/en-GB#my-picks/group but I've got no idea which teams are decent. Anybody want to help me out?
edg, koo, skt, lgd and kt rolster are 99% gonna make it out of groups

clg, fnatic and ig are also very likely to be the other 3 that make it out, with ahq fighting for either fnatic or ig's spot and the flash wolves will try to take clg's

c9, origen, tsm, h2k, bangkok titans and pain are 99% fucked lol

Supports that build full AP and aren't Brand, Annie, or Vel'Koz make me sad.

i mean the odd mejais or zhonyas on nami is not so bad

lol

Thanks, should be enough for the summoner icon.

A week ago, zkylon showed me this blasted game and got me to try it out. I want my life back!

Having played my first couple matches against human opponents, I've got to say that (A) I suck; and (B) I've been getting at least one quitter on my team per match. One time I got paired with an ADC who wouldn't even try to last hit, and wouldn't go in whenever I snared opponents as Morgana and tried my best to set the kill up for him. He'd just watch as I spent my mana and the nemy either got away or got some help from their own support to kill me.

So far I've been focusing on support characters, which was a pain since I got to summoner level 6, saw that Thresh was unlocked on Monday, but then realized that the champion rotation actually happens on Tuesday mornings. Then I was stuck with Morgana and eventually tried Kog'Maw out a bit (its Chinese dragon skin will be mine someday).

Hey dude! Glad you're enjoying yourself. Are there any major pain points you're having as a new player? Anything in terms of the game that you're particularly struggling with, anything you feel isn't explained very well?

Also, did you start solo (thereby having to learn by doing/trial and error) or did you have friends to help ease you in? Did you use any resources you thought were good in helping you learn? I'd be really interested to hear your experiences going through the starting experience.

make sure the ADC has mana and some items before you go in (because if they have no items that means now they will need a skill). Some ADCs rather just farm til they at least make 1 trip back to get an +AD item. I know myself, I usually only play aggressive in early game as Varus. But on some of my other adcs I rather just farm in peace til my first back but it can be tough if the support is constantly going in

Hmm, never thought that could be taken into consideration at all. As a supp I tend to play aggressive and hope the adc would follow up.

Maybe i should be more communicative before we actually lane.

Yeah, there are players like that. I just accept the fact that sometimes you will be planning against bad players who don't know the basics and the worst thing is, sometimes they blame you for their downfall. Just hope they don't report you :/

Well you aren't an ADC who asks for dmg so...

Hey I got to diamond without thinking about this at all. I mean sure I may notice it a few times but I don't make a conscious effort to put it in practice consistently.

It shows how deep lol is and how even at my rank there is still a lot to learn even from guys below me.

Thanks for the tip btw patchday.

So 5.18 is going to be Worlds patch, interesting as there is still a lot of 'stuff' in this patch that probably should have been love tapped up or down a bit.

That Morg Q buff though.

Though you need to tone down/buff stuff, you still have to keep it within a certain range to not disrupt competitive play too much. You gotta remember these teams will have like 2 weeks of practice with nothing but solo Q and scrims to work with.

I'm still struggling with knowing when to push and when to pull back, and getting used to managing cooldowns and using items with active abilities. Also, playing with randoms makes it even harder to actaully coordinate our actions, which leads to several obvious mistakes where I've gotten killed with nothing to show for it. I still haven't gotten yesterday's IP bonus for winning yesterday since I lost all four games I played.

Like I said, I got into LoL thanks to zkylon, so he's been giving me a hand with getting used to most of the basics, to the point I haven't watched anything on the net besides champion spotlights. I'm kind of happy I haven't been paired with extremely toxic players who hated me for not knowing how to do everything perfectly, but then again I've only played six games against human opponents. The one thing I don't like so far is that I've got to grind IP for a whole week in order to get any of the champions I want (Thresh, Lulu, Nami, and maybe Kog sometime to have some non-support characters), and that this week's rotation didn't have any support characters besides Morgana (even though it was okay since I got to try her going mid sometimes).

Anything you think Riot could do to make your experience as a new player better? What do you think of the current new player champion rotation?

Sorry if I'm basically asking you to fill out a survey, but it is relevant to my interests.

i quite remember him finding his initial understanding of the game critically impaired by the lack of cute syndra skins

He told me personally he thinks League is awful, and the only way to turn it around is with massive buffs to our king Taric.

I know it's not really your department or anything but having the 450ip champs as free would really help new players pick a main faster and probably help them enjoy the game a lot more. Increasing the number of weekly free champs would also probably have a similar effect. I've had some friends who want to play LoL because they watched some pro games and saw this Ahri champion do really well so they want to play her. When I explain that you need to grind out IP or wait for her to be free week their interest quickly wanes.

It's basically the Destiny syndrome right now. No one wants to start playing a game where they're behind the entire population who has better champs/runes/etc. They feel as though they missed their opportunity to begin playing and there is no point in starting since they're so far behind.

that doesn't solve the big issue your friends would run into of having to grind a lot to get to play the cool 6300 champions tho. like having the 450 champions for free would be nice i guess but those champions are pretty lame, your starting out friend that wants to play ahri or thresh isn't gonna be like "oh i guess warwick is fun too" lol

giving players a free champion at certain levels would be pretty nice if done right i think. make a popup saying u got a free champion coupon, show a few suggestions of different classes with some cool artwork and force you to pick someone for free at the shop. it should be probably at levels like 10, 20 and 30 or something like that, maybe at lvl 8 so it's a bit earlier, i dunno. just make it so it's not super early so people aren't just making and discarding accounts to try out new champions for free.

also honestly make leveling like 2x faster. that shit is old af

edit: also how about a system in which u pick one champion from free rotation to have for free for an extra week. in two weeks you play a lot with ahri and by week 2 you'll probably have enough to afford her.

ez way to make the game feel less grindy would be to make every champ free and give everyone like 20k ip and apologize for such a dumb grinding model

Yeah, 450 IP champions really have no business costing IP these days specially since they're supposed to be simple, beginner friendly champions

zkylon

zkylewd
I thought it was just by date or oldest to newest.
it's both, old ass champions are usually simpler/easier

i don't think buying champions is that bad of a model, it's just that the tuning is really shitty if you're starting out/making a smurf and that's by design

I was a new player quite recently (looking at my purchase history I've been active since 7/06/15). The model is not so bad for a free to play game. But what really sucks is the outrageous rune prices which totally screws over new players. But that is being addressed a little bit when tier 3 rune prices get reduced.

---------------------------------------------

Game really needs to address the bot issue and I've opened a ticket with Riot on this and gotten back a response. Sometimes at the beginning of ARAM matches I see players querying each other whether we are "Real humans". Thus, I've always had the impression the only viable modes for new players:

- Dominion Coop AI (most of the time you'll get real dudes in here looking for a WoTD)
- ARAM
- Summoner's Rift (pvp modes; no idea bout Coop AI)

Which is a shame. I'd love to play Twisted Treeline but I don't want to be the only "human" playing. Sure, maybe my MMR would get me out of bot terriority but new players will get turned off ASAP. Consider DOTA 2 which has a plethora of modes that I've played which has no bots. I suppose this is an advantage of not having a grindy-IP model so LoL is just in a bad spot here.

---------------------------------------------

Toxic players are extra tough on new players. Game needs to do a better job of displaying the actual level of players in-game so the "veteran" players can tell "Hey, I got a newbie maybe I can give some tips". This might not help much since toxic smurfs will be jerks regardless. So this is a low priority request

-----------------------------------------------

More importantly, I feel DOTA 2 does a much better job at displaying viable builds in-game. An ignorant player can buy all the wrong items. If the game client could be updated to poll the popular websites for builds that would be a huge help!

-----------------------------------------------

Game needs a better tutorial (if there is any to be found). Teach players where to place Wards. Show what wards are all about. I think I recall DOTA 2 tutorial teaching players about wards. Maybe LoL players, pre-30, are just too terrible to ward tho I dunno. I got my start in HOTS where "Vision" is a map objective so most players got the sense to get it (or maybe my MMR is high there and I'm getting good teammates I don't know)

-----------------------------------------------

Mastery system is kind of lame. It only gives XP for one mode. Thus the "achievers" will be drawn to Rift over the other modes. Granted, my friends & coworkers much rather play ARAM anyways but it would be nice if they had a mastery system. The other modes feel incomplete or forgotten because they lack that extra touch. I love how in HOTS your character always gains Mastery points and once maxed- you unlock a Master skin.

-----------------------------------------------

To be frank I feel this MOBA is the most decadent and getting left behind by DOTA / HOTS but I love the Champions here a lot

[edit] Not saying I feel this MOBA is the worst btw because I love this game. I just feels it's hands down the most hostile to new players by a loonnnnggggg mile.
