Looks like an even darker universe this time around

Can't argue with that.

So could we see Joaquin Phoenix's joker in this reboot? Kinda fits stylistically. Even the goons that batman was fighting looked like the joker's men.

Nope. Every Batman film that didnt have Christopher Nolans name on it sucked badly and this movie isn't gonna change that. And you can include Batman vs Supes and Justice League in that group.

Edit - I should note though that I loved the writing for and casting of Jeremy Irons as Alfred in the League movies. His dead pan delivered saltiness was awesome.
Tim Burton would like a word with you.

The Nirvana song did it no favours. Yep, we get it, dark and edgy, etc.
I dunno, I find myself missing the Burton version of Batman more and more.

BMTAS is still the one to beat.

I'll take that a step further and say that Schumacher's Batman & Robin gets even better with time while the Nolan trilogy is aging like milk. TDK and TDKR are, in my opinion, the sloppiest and least enjoyable Batman movies. Rewatching TDK today is pretty wild seeing how bad the dialogue is, how poorly paced scenes are, how sloppily and poorly edited action scenes are, and how Harvey Dent may be the most embarrassingly shitty performance in any Batman film--a performance that the whole plot relies upon. Well, him and Batman, who also can't be taken seriously at all.

Call me crazy, but Batman & Robin has aged really well as camp, and well Batman '66 even more so, which deserves way more recognition for how ahead of its time the humor was.

Not likely. Also he would be very old in this because the Joker movie was set in the 80s.

This is an incredible trailer.

There's so much about it that I like:

Riddler being portrayed as a serial killer that tests Batman's detective skills is a great idea. The crime scene investigation scenes gave me serious Se7en vibes and I agree with the people that said parts of this trailer look like they come from a David Fincher movie. Paul Dano is an incredible actor and I think will make for an amazing Riddler.

Jeffrey Wright looks great as Gordon. Another incredible actor that I think will own the part. I like that Batman seems to be working with the GCPD in some scenes and I liked the shot of the officers gawping at Batman as he first walked in.

The Batman suit looks great on film. It's like a nice mix of the Nolan and the Snyder suit. I wasn't sold on the collar at first but it's a genius idea. It gives the suit a thick necked silhouette but will still allow Batman to move his neck and turn his head. The cowl isn't perfect but Pattinson has the perfect Batman jaw/chin and he looks really good in it. The metallic bat symbol on the chest is a nice touch too. I think it's my favourite Batman suit on film based on what we've seen (although I did like how faithful the Battfleck suit was too).

The brief shot that we got of the Bat Cave looked cool. Seems pretty grounded and I like that it looked like a workshop. They look to be playing up to the idea that Bruce makes all of his own equipment rather than just relying on Fox to make shit for him.

The clip of Barman annihilating the thug was perfection. No goofy slow Nolan elbows or over the top flashy comic book shit. Just a quick brutal beat down with his fists and some heavy ground and pound. The intensity in the punches was much appreciated and I like how quickly he moved in the suit. Bale moved way too slowly in his suit so the fights always looked terrible. The vengeance line could have been really cheesy but Pattinson delivered it really well. His Barman voice reminds me of a more intense Keaton and I think he's gonna be a great Batman.

The brief shots of the Batmobile looked great. I was already a big fan of the stills that we had already seen of it and I'm glad that it still has the jet engine flames coming out of the exhaust. Although it does look a lot like a muscle car I think it suits the noir style of the film and makes sense for a year two Batman.

I had no idea that Colin Farrell was in the trailer! I knew he was playing Penguin but on first viewing I had no idea that was actually him in the trailer. They've done an incredible job with the prosthetics, he's completely unrecognisable and it alleviates any fears I had that he wouldn't look right as Penguin. The 'this guys crazy' line was brilliant too.

I get the criticism that the final shot of Pattinson without the cowl makes him look more like Nightwing than Batman but I also like that we are seeing a young Batman in his early 20s (it makes sense that younger Batman would kind of look like Nightwing). Have we ever seen a Batman this young? I know Bale was supposed to be playing young Batman in Begins but he still looked much older than Pattinson does in this. I also get why some people cried EMO at the eye make up but Batman is inherently an emo character. The actors have always worn eye make up under the cowl as well and it was kind of stupid that it would magically disappear when they took the cowl off. I really like the idea that Bruce takes of his cowl and hes a sweaty mess under there after a hard night pounding criminals lol. Pattinson is gonna absolutely nail a brooding, rage filled, younger Batman.

And finally the music! I know it's Nirvana so won't be used in the film but it's fucking perfection in this trailer and really sells that 90s grunge vibe. The way it's mixed with the strings that swell up for the logo reveal at the end is incredible. It's the best use of music in a Batman film or trailer since the original Elfman theme in the Burton films. I have high hopes for the score and think they will finally give us a memorable Batman theme.

The only thing I'm not 100% sold on is Catwoman. Apparently she is just starting out in this film which would explain the rudimentary costume. I just don't really like Catwoman as a character so hopefully they sell me on her.
The Riddler 'costume' also looked weird.

Overall I haven't been this hyped for a Batman film since TDK. I think this is gonna be glorious and can't fucking wait.

Burton's was considered dark and edgy for its time. Burton was going to pass on the job because of how goofy Batman was until The Dark Knight Returns convinced him Batman could be taken seriously. The pitch for it was often turned down as well...

"Uslan was stunned when he and Melniker’s pitch for a dark Batman film was turned down by every studio. “Not only did they turn us down, they basically said, ‘This is the worst idea we've ever heard,'” Uslan recalls."

Some choice quotes here like “Peters and Gruber didn’t even want to go as dark as Tim, but Tim stuck to his guns and you gotta give him credit for that.” “We've been at this for seven-and-a-half years now to do a dark and serious Batman and they appeared to want to hire a comedian." Not seeing the quote from me about Burton almost not doing it, forget where I read that, but still.

Is it just me or is the guy who gets the shit beat out of him CG? If he is CG I can understand why, to make it look more visceral.

*EDIT*
The reason I think it's CG is because of how he falls down, there is a blurriness to it that doesn't look natural.

Even with the emo hair, Robert Patterson is probably going to kill it in this. Forget sparkling vampires... He's actually an amazing actor.

I can't wait. ♥

Anyone who still tries to hold Twilight over his head hasn't watched any of his recent movies.

All he does is serious stuff now, for years. David Cronenburg, Chistopher Nolan, Robert Eggers, and on. I can't think of a less glamorous and teeny bopper movie than The Lighthouse.

and to think I was one of these people, but after watching the lighthouse he completely blew my mind. Next sunday for tenet can't come soon enough!

The penguin is a guy with acne now lol where is the costume dept? Yeah it’s so amazing people stuck some shit on Colin Farrel’s face. Lol

But Batman punches a guy! A lot! That’s... something? Isn’t it?

I liked the trailer but people are probably hyped because of the talent involved....

Reeves made two really good Planet of the Apes movies, plus Cloverfield and Let Me In are both solid films also. He hasn't really made a bad film, clearly has a lot of passion for the character and is saying all the right things.

Pattinson has proven himself to be a formidable actor with a lot of range and looks like he'll nail the brooding and angry Batman.

Paul Dano is another great actor that has been good in everything he's been in. He's also great at playing unlikeable characters so will make for a good villain. Riddler hasn't been overused in film - what about him in this looks TV like?

Jeffrey Wright, Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell are all great actors. There's a lot of talent in this - arguably better casting than Nolan's films.

Who's the Riddler?

His look would be better if his entire jaw area wasn't totally exposed IMO.

His voice is great and I love the tone of this.

Yup I'm basically only interested in Batman stuff. Marvel shit ain't my cup of tea.

Riddler going to be wicked.

Loving the look and feel of this!

I am vengeance!

Rewound and cranked the volume 5 times over with that scene.

That said, Batfleck is apparently still going to be around. He's even said to be part of Flash's new movie.

Batfleck in The Flash is basically a big cameo to give Affleck the send off he didn't get. The main Batman in the movie is Keaton who fights side-by-side with The Flash and designs his new costume. After Flashpoint, Keaton becomes the Bruce Wayne in the Justice League universe and is the Nick Fury mentor figure for the Justice League kind of like in Kingdom Come:

Reeves said from Day 1 this would be a detective story which we only got hints of with Burton and was basically ignored in every Batman since.

Jeffrey Wright looks great as Gordon. Another incredible actor that I think will own the part. I like that Batman seems to be working with the GCPD in some scenes and I liked the shot of the officers gawping at Batman as he first walked in.

Batman putting a juggalo in traction was the best movie scene of 2020.

Farrell says his role is small in the movie, but since this is Year 2 and all of them are just starting out we'll probably get more of him in the sequels.

We've already heard the theme. Giacchino used it in the suit reveal video:

The only thing I'm not 100% sold on is Catwoman. Apparently she is just starting out in this film which would explain the rudimentary costume. I just don't really like Catwoman as a character so hopefully they sell me on her.

Kravitz hinted that the final suit would be Tim Sale inspired.

I haven't been this excited for a Batman movie since 1989.

This is a Series right? Not a movie? Season 3 of Gotham? Gotta be a joke. The weakest, thinnest-non-athletic-emo-batman ... who for some reason, now kills his opponents.

Also at FanDome Reeves said Batman: Ego was a big influence. So Reeves understands that BATMAN DOESN'T KILL (unlike every Batman director before him)

So, from DC we'll have the following slate: The Batman, The Suicide Squad, and Justice League: Snyder Cut, all of which I'm very excited to see, especially The Snyder Cut.

I could do without the emo hair. It also looks like the rumors were true about Pattinson not really training for the role. Looks alright enough.

Actually the slate is:
Wonder Woman 84
The Suicide Squad
The Batman
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Black Adam
The Flash
Aquaman 2

And there's more in development, especially once JJ Abrams decides what movie he wants to do that's on the table before him.

all the villains look like regular dudes. the joker guys wearing weak ass face paint look like extras from Batman & Robin. that's really the moment where i was like "seriously? they want me to pay $15+ to see this?"

Batman is defined by his villains. these just aren't interesting from a visual design perspective. sure the movie could be great. sure the actors are great. but great actors don't make a great movie.

i'm just giving my first impressions. all the villains look like normal people in normal clothes wearing a tiny amount of makeup. Penguin is just a guy with putty on his face. Riddler, just a guy. not visually exciting. i just like more fantasy in my movies is all. the Nolan trilogy wasn't really my jam either, as much as i enjoyed watching the movies at the time. i'm just a little tired of the look.
