Let's just get it out of our systems: I don't understand you "collectors".

That isn't cool. I don't understand collectors, especially those who never open the games. I sold my ex's nintendo with around 100 games to EB last year for like $120. If you're not going to play a game ever again, there isn't any point in keeping it around.
do you keep books that you have read?

Skipping all the replies, so I may repeat someone...

Collecting replaces the hunter/gatherer instinct. It's why they can put things in games that are also collectathons, because it appeals to that part of the mind.

Now, does it make sense? No.

Is it a viable hobby? Sure, but nothing where you're gonna get rich of buying every NES game and trying to sell it all at once. The biggest collection I ever saw on ebay went for like 35k, but there was probably 20-25k worth of stuff there. Way easier to make that kind of return elsewhere.

But it's no different than collecting anything else, there are completists of everything and anything, there are greedy scalpers, etc etc. But if it's how someone has fun, who am I to say it's wrong?

Also, to the OP: the rerelease Rez has no white sticker on the top, so the sealed original release still retains its status as "rare original"... :p

It's like any hobby, people gain enjoyment out of different aspects of it. I like having a good collection of games, and I like to try to have guides for every game we own. Some people are crazy, but that's no different than any other hobby (sports cards, figurines, whatever). As long as you enjoy it who the **** cares. There's nothing to "get."

I guess it's different for me in that baseball cards/comics/books/Barbie dolls are all somewhat non-interactive. You can read them, you can put them on a shelf, you can look at them through the package and acheieve some simalcrum of what the object would be like outside of it's bubble.

Trying to play a game by staring at the box is like trying to watch a movie by staring at the poster. It's an interactive medium, designed to confrence with a user. Keeping it in a box is so counter-intuitive it makes my heart break MORE.

That's over-Darwinizing it. People keep things that they like around. It's not some biological glitch.

No, but I have a vast amount of it. You could probably make yourself a nice tree fiddy at a recycling center from it, or you could package all of it in plastic bags and yell at someone every time they attempt to touch it. Got to keep it mint!

No way, I'm going to give it to them and tell them you told me not to. They'll give you the cold shoulder for weeks.

Pfft all the cool cats collect Yu-gioh cards now. Carrying Pokemon cards will get your ass beat and socks stolen in my hood.

I collect RPGs that interest me. Meaning, I buy them, play them, then keep them to revisit again another time. Like books/movies/etc.

Jeez man, why does this thread exist? It's not hard to understand...

I traded in games all the time when I was younger, but then I realized at one point that I had bought, sold, then bought again Super Mario World THREE TIMES. At that point I realized that most of the time, unless a game is crappy obviously, trading in games is dumb. After then I just started holding on to games that I liked, and thus, the collection started.

Now I collect to acquire games that I have never been able to play before. I wasn't allowed to have an NES when I was a kid and I didn't have a Genesis or a Sega CD either, so when I'm at the flea market and I see a game that's considered good for an old system that I never played I pick it up so I can play it. It's fun to hunt down good rare games that you've never had the opportunity to play before.

As for boxes, well, hell it looks waaay nicer to have stuff in boxes. I'm not too picky about it, and a lot of my stuff is cart only, but if you can get boxes it's pretty cool.

I don't really understand shrink wrapped stuff. I just collect to play good games.

anyone who says they aren't collectors better not own a "collectors edition" of a video game.

I don't get that, either. Sometimes there's a nice bonus but 99% of the time it's "OH IF I PAY 70 DOLLARS MORE I GET A LIMITED EDITION GOLD COIN AND A RECREATION OF THE HAT THE MAIN CHARACTER WEARS." Or some art book you'll flip through once and a documentary about the sound effects.

what collecter edition games do you get?

I dont see the point in hording unopened games. I mean if you wanna buy it sealed so YOU can open and play it, fine, but if its gonna sit on a shelf, sealed, screw you. at least TRY it.

There's this kid, and this is the truth, who collects only Resident Evil games. Not because he simply enjoys the series and wants to own every single one so that he can play them. You know, maybe he does enjoy the series. And I know that he plays them. But he buys multiple copies of the games so he can open one and save the other. No, seriously.

He was sold a Limited Edition Resident Evil 4 (Gamecube) and the sticker that was on the packaging was off center. He asked the clerk, who apparently had earlier dealings with the kid, if he could have another copy because...the sticker was off center. The clerk, who I know and is mostly a complete douche to begin with, told the kid know.

So he came to me, with his receipt, and asked to swap the game for another, mint copy. Me, I don't think I'm a douche, and it's no skin off my back, so I did. And for the next four months, he came into my store weekly, without fail, looking for more Resident Evil games. Sometimes he'd buy three or four of the same game. I think he even bought both the Player's Choice Resident Evil 4 (Cube) and the original, just to have them "in the plastic."

I swear to god, when Prima translated and released that Resident Evil history book, he reserved six copies and crapped his pants twice. Crazy kids.

I'm not so much a collector, more of a hoarder. That said, now that I store my games in cd binder-wallets with the cases packed away, the GH thing doesn't bother me much. I try to get the original whenever possible, though.

I dunno, I like having stuff. I'm a packrat, I guess. I also like having something to show for a generation of game playing. Not show as in show other people (my games are out of site in a closed cabinet) but rather a game library as opposed to a generation of renting and not having anything when the generation is over. It's hard to explain.

Well you just sound like bundles of fun, dude.

I completely understand what you mean about "having somethin to show". I don't understand the guys who trade in their game for 1.70 USD.. or who walk in with a giant stack of Ps2 games and leave with the new Madden that depreciates to 5 dollars next week.

I don't get it. :-/

i have about 30 sealed nes games, no way im opening a sealed copy of metroid when i can buy a loose cart for about 5 bucks, i could sell it now for about a grand easily

You claim a sealed copy of Metroid would net $1000? I don't believe that for a second.

I collect games. I've started keeping track of them with a list, but haven't counted them all yet. I'd guess it to be around 300 or so.

About the "strip of shame." Generally, the moment a game goes Greatest Hits or whatever analogous title for other consoles, you'll be able to pick up a copy of the intial shipment at the reduced price. I did that with my Paper Mario 2, and my friend did it just last week with Shadow of the Colossus.

I collect games and things game related. I used to have stacks and stacks of game magazines dating back to the beginning of the 16-bit era, but my parents ended up throwing them all away. I keep promotional materials, demo discs, strategy guides, and especially artbooks. I go out of my way to find video game related art books.

It's just something I do.

I collect games, but not intentionally. What I mean is, I don't keep them sealed or anything (though they're pretty much in pristine condition since I take very good care fo them). I'm always worried about games becoming hard to find so I tend to buy games and then not play them for months on end, which means I have a pretty huge backlog.

I do collect Sega Saturn stuff. Not necessarily sealed games or anything like that, but stuff that's rare or unique or just piques my interest.

I do collect robot figures. It started out as a casual hobby and has become a rather sick obsession, though my one restriction is that I only buy mecha from shows/games I've actually seen.

I did this too, for quite awhile. But my backlog was over 400 games, so I'm in the process of unloading stuff I know I'm never gonna get to, heh.

My backlog goes all the way back to the PSX and Saturn days. :lol

I still have very early PS2 stuff waiting to be played - Okage, anyone?

Yeah, I still have Saturn backlog. :lol Magic Knight Rayearth, Shining the Holy Ark, Shining Force 3, and Princess Crown.

I have all of those, and have finished them except for Princess Crown and Shining the Holy Ark. Those're still on the backlog. I have Panzer Dragoon Saga, too, bought it used from a person on Usenet back when it came out, for $35 (!!!!).

I also have some Sega CD games I'm very fond of - Snatcher, Lunar, and Lunar 2. Finished all of those, though.

I'm definitely the most bitter about having sold/traded away my Saturn games, though. I had gotten rid of Vampire Savior, XvsSF w/ 4MB, Soukyugurentai, Keio Yukegitai, Sega Rally, Fighting Vipers (Jpn.), Princess Crown, Panzer Dragoon I and II, Last Bronx (Jpn.), Cyberbots, Shinobi Legions, and maybe a couple others I'm forgetting before I broke myself of the trade-in habit.

This brings me to a random question. Are there any binders out there for storing DVDs (meaning, you can store the disc and the instruction manual, other crap, etc with it)? If so, any good place to grab some? My Wal Mart doesn't have any in my neck of the woods, and not sure where to check. I would actually like to start storing my PS2 games in these to cut down on space.

Cyberbots is relatively inexpensive nowadays, as are VS and XvsSF.

Man, I forgot I sold my copy of Radiant Silvergun to a friend for about $70. I really wish I hadn't, now. I think he ended up selling it off for over $100.

Of course there are DVD binders that have slots for booklets, but you'd probably have to go to a place like Best Buy or Circuit City for them. I tend to shy away from DVD binders, though, since the pages for booklets bring down the capacity of discs the binder can hold. (I guess this is neglible if money is no object for you, but it hurts my sense of a decent bargain.) For example, all of my PS2 games went from being in a 32-ct. CD wallet, to a 84(?)-ct. CD folder, and now a 200-ct. CD binder. I'm gonna have to buy another 300+ct. binder for X360 and Wii games anyway.

I definitely need Vampire Savior back in some form on a console I own. :( Goddamn, do I love my Darkstalkers. Cyberbots, I'm not so crazy about anymore; XvsSF is probably moot in lieu of MvC2.

Heh, I bought Radiant Silvergun new for $70 right when it came out. I've come close to unloading it a couple of times, but ultimately decided against it. I could've sworn I had Layer Section / Galactic Attack at one point, but I don't know. :(

Capcom needs to bring out some of their rarer arcade games in a collection - I'm talking stuff like Power'd Gear, Cyberbots, Warzard...I would pay CASH MONEY for that stuff.

I want Radiant Silvergun, but that one's so frickin' expensive, and I don't want it quite that badly. XvsSF is not really moot in lieu of MvC2 - the game is a bit more balanced and it has better music and backgrounds.

How badass would a compilation of all the Marvel Vs. games be?

CASH MONEY, CAPCOM. DO IT.

I totally agree with the original poster. I'm done with that kind of mentality. I see all my PS2, GC, PS, N65, DC, and XBOX games collecting dust and I recently asked myself what was the point of keeping this shit if I'm not playing it. The only thing I'll probably keep is my DC because the games aren't backwards compatible.

Anyone know how much an XBOX will get me at gamespot or whatever? I want to buy a 360 this fall.

I would never get anyone around here to take me on in XvsSF these days. They'd be all "So, why aren't we playing MvC2 instead?" See also: SFA2 -> A3. :P But, yeah, I'd be all over a Marvel vs. Capcom Collection with X-Men: CotA, MSH, XvsSF, MSHvsSF, MvC1, and MvC2 (I don't think I'm missing any). MvC2 is still such a sought after game. I never really sank my teeth into MSH, MSHvsSF, or MvC1.
