Robyn's Dancing on my Own is such a (gay) anthem. Bless her.

I knew of this song only through RuPaul's Drag Race.

Pop has such a close relationship with the gay community that I feel like I should like it, but I really can't. There was this Beyonce presentation last weekend here in Rock in Rio and one of my friends was joking about why I wasn't there, not because he knew, but because there were a lot of gay guys in the concert, which was being broadcasted on TV, at first we were both intrigued by so many gay guys, maybe they really liked David Guetta, then it hit me, ooohh of course, Beyonce.

I really don't get it though, I know it happens, but I don't get it.

Me neither. I've been a metalhead & Dark electronic guy for quite some time now and whenever music comes up I stick out like a sore thumb.
It's painful to me that we attach our subculture so closely to a single musical genre, and one of the most mainstreamed ones at that.

(I'm one of those people that doesn't particularly like being in either the straight or gay communities because both are very alien to me in different ways.)

Sorry, but "Pop has such a close relationship with the gay community" sounds like a terrible reason to force yourself to like something. In my eyes, the only thing we should have in common is that we are into the same porn, and that's debatable :p

I just like certin pop songs, like classic Paul McCartney, David Bowie and Elton John. The rest of the music I listen to is rock and a little alternative.

I'm pretty sure he meant the gay stereotype, that we are supposed to love modern pop and those fabulous artists.

Eh, it's like how some people will read celebrity gossip blogs just so they can make frivolous conversation with strangers at parties. It's not really like you're trying to force yourself into a certain niche so much as using popular culture as a means of relating to people. I can't say I do it, but I think the inclination makes sense.

I try to like pop music, because some of it is decent (like Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, some others, etc) it's not really something I listen to, but the fact that I can appreciate it sometimes makes me feel like broadening my horizons in that genre.

No don't get me wrong, I don't feel I need to do it just because, but many gay guys love it, I would even say the majority, and while there might be some that are indeed doing it for social pressure from their gay friends group, I think again the majority is really into it, which is what I don't get, with very few exceptions, their music is not aimed at gay people, or at least not evidently.

It's more like I feel like I'm missing something about pop music, specially female lead pop music, that really clicks with many gay guys, I'm intrigued more than anything, I don't hate it or anything, funnily enough many, many songs I heard in gay clubs I had no idea they were from Britney Spears or Maddona, I thought they were just club music from the DJ, electronic music.

Edit: take dancing on my own, as Bladenic said it is considered a gay anthem, and by many others, but is about a girl, watching the guy she likes kissing another girl. Now I know there is I will Survive, or Born This Way, which do have messages that indeed speak to gay people, but those are the minority, or maybe I pay too much attention to lyrics, I don't know really.

Not even Kate Bush?

I'm a person who should have an inclination for that kind of pop music, I loved Disney princesses and shit as a kid, but it's pretty hit or miss with me. Madonna can be alright, but I kind of hate Brit's singing voice, etc.

edit: Need to post more Kate Bush because Kate Bush. She's a legit artist tho.

Yeah, it's an... interesting phenomenon. And it's one of my totally scientific Facebook stalking factors. It's just very uncommon for a straight guy to downright worship Britney Spears or Lady Gaga, lol.

As you say, I'm not sure why the appeal is so strong. These pop acts are mostly about strong displays of female sexuality, which in theory would not be attractive to male gay guys? Is it a thing of admiration? Is it a matter of gay people being really into clubbing and these girls releasing mostly club anthems? :p

This is perfectly listen-able music, but out of context I would have swore that was Rock, not Pop.

I don't really get how these genres work, I guess it is rock but it's also billboard stuff, so like arty pop-rock? Idk. The quality of her stuff (vocals, lyrics, visual aesthetic) always kind of makes me wonder why she enjoyed the mainstream appeal that she did, but she's generally considered 'pop royalty' or whatever I think?

Anyways let's all listen to this and cry.

One thing (among hundreds) that I really like about Kate Bush is her insight into feeling. A lot of her songs are written from the perspectives of other characters (like all of the ones I posted, including the one above) and then she expresses feelings from this perspective in this way that's so clear, impartial and not self-indulgent, like an intimate observer. That in addition to everything else makes her like a wizard to me.

So, should you believe a guy who tells you how he feels about you when he's drunk, or is it the other way around?

i'm way more lovey when i'm drunk/on something. i wouldn't take it too seriously, but on the other hand, it's nice that they thought of you while totally intoxicated :)

Also, going to see Chvrches this Sunday, thanks Sai and Motorde for introducing me to them.

Our pleasure. Have a fantastic time :D

You can be gay and not like pop lmao.

As long as you don't like metal and/or screamo. Ew.

What's wrong with metal?

Too loud, and more screaming than actual singing. I honestly can't stand those songs, especially if they are played at a high volume.

I listen to game soundtracks (and remixes) mostly, but when it comes to the "traditional" genres, I prefer classical the most. Because I'm boring like that.

Oh, and I guess J-pop, too.

I've also noticed that opera is another genre that falls under "gay" prefence

That's the first I've heard of this. I fit under that, I suppose.

.

It sounds like you've only heard thrash or black metal. Which is a lot like saying hip hop is trash because you dislike gangster rap.

Those are okay, I guess, but I still don't really like it. I guess metal just isn't my thing.

Fair enough.

Also my Gaydar is hitting critical thresholds near the guy who sits behind me in one of my classes but I don't know how to actually engage with him without actually going to sit next to him, which I imagine would be very uncomfortable.

Pretty? :?

Yeah, but like not fairy princess pretty obviously. IDK I have a 'sensitive soul' and I can get into it, it's not really abrasive in the way that it fills you with hate or bad vibes or anything, you just have to view it as an intense pagan ritual conducted by a bunch of cloaked dudes in a forest or something.

Mmh. I guess when viewed in that context it is sort of pretty. That's a good way of framing it.

The only Pop music I like is J-Pop. Does that count?

Seriously? You're in a classroom environment! That's a perfect setup to engage someone in conversation because you're classmates. Turn around and asks him about the subject, ask him if he can help you with a particular problem, ask him if he remembers what assignment is due next week.

Oh this. I used to like opera, now not so much.

The other one is musicals, which I can't stand. I knew by heart Disney's movies dialogues and songs as a kid though.

Maybe gay people are really into dramatic stuff. Pop is kind of dramatic.

That's... a very stereotypical way of thinking about metal music to be honest (one that I've been guilty of too once). There are a lot of sub-genres of metal. I really recommend you to travel through the map of metal. You can find there a lot of different types of music/songs - from trashy and shouty ones, where you barely can hear lyrics and the singer sounds as if he has a throat cancer, to very melodic ones with clean voices.

In other news, in the "Recommended for you" section Facebook proposed me The Amazing Ari page because, apparently, "many people liked it". I have no idea why I clicked it, because I usually ignore all those recommended and sponsored pages, but, well, I did like what I saw there :3

is there a term for the opposite of a power bottom? I've heard alley cat, except I'm not a slut. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm assertive enough to top, but in a daily non-sexual setting I can be a pretty dainty bitch.

"not insertive!"
