Glad I'm not the only one. One of the reasons why I could never do retail is because some customers are extremely rude and disrespectful. I've seen poor customer salesman get yelled and thrown things at. There was a popular YouTube video about a similar situation. I hate that motto too.

I like the idea of allies being represented as part of the community as well. For example, what about the straight child of same-sex parents?
Adding a bit more nuance to the conversation, I guess you could also say that "ally" doesn't necessarily have to mean that one is straight; for instance, a gay or lesbian person could be an ally for transgender rights.
(I'm ultimately not that fussed though, just adding my 2c.
I do wonder, are hearing parents of deaf children (or hearing children of deaf parents) considered part of the Deaf community if they take the steps to learn sign language and interact with members of the community?

You should read Far from the Tree by Andrew Solomon. It has a section about deaf people and as far I can remember they actually look down on hearers who learn sign language and some of them seem to think it would be better to have deaf children taken away from their hearing parents to be raised within the deaf community.
Are they really your friends then? I know the feeling, and I wouldn't consider them "friends" more like acquaintances. Yet some of them might not be able to make it, or have legit reasons for not being able to hang out with you.
Put me in the camp that thought the "A" in the acronym meant to represent asexual people. I had no idea it referenced allies. :x
Anyway, while we're talking about the new OT I'm repeating my previous request about putting a list of interesting, worth watching/reading books and movies about LGBT stuff in the OT. Maybe reserve first post (or two, just in case) for such list so it could be systematically updated with time?
Unfortunately, gay movies are of varied quality (most that I've seen steered into the boring/too-artsy-for-me category) and it would be great to have an easily accessible list of recommended movies and books without having to look through the whole thread or constantly asking people about them. Just few pages ago (few hundreds posts ago) I saw people talking about the movie Beautiful Thing. With this thread moving in a speed of light these days, if I wasn't so bored at work, I would have easily miss it.

Yes, I remember. That would be a nice section to add. Can you come up with a list of LGBT related films that you like? Let's all try to come up with a list for films and books. TV shows too. I think it would be good to add it to the OT instead of reserving the first post for it.

The A is for Asexuals. Some people use it to mean both. Some people use it just for allies but this is in error.
The bolded was my understanding of it as of before, but after reading through a lot of discussions and educating myself a bit on Asexuals with some articles I feel like they deserve a letter of their own, and since 2 A's would look silly I think of it as just Asexuals now.
The people that fight with us against people and laws that try to discriminate us are still welcome here to interact with that community, of course, they are just not part ot the acronym as far as I'm concerned..

Same. I fucking loved those books! (no lgbt characters iirc, though David always gave me those vibes)
It has more to do with just totemism which isn't something that is exclusively part of the furry fandom. So I doubt that only furries would like those books.
Oh, and apropos totemism, everyone should check out Isabel Allende's YA novel called City of the Beasts, it's magical.
