That's the gist of it.
For me, it's less the dissonance is hard to stomach, but more that it makes it impossible to take anything seriously. This is clearly a game pandering to fans of Lightning and past FFs, where fan service takes precedence over, say, consistent and coherent characterization.
And that's fine, I guess. It's a spin-off, after all. In fact, the dissonance has actually become a pro for me! It gives the game this surreal, goofy, campy quality I've grown to really like.

You mean they're ignoring the fanbase where there games sell more in favour of a smaller audience? No wonder their business is going to shit. The games generally sells more total in the rest of the world then in Japan.

At some point she punched him in the face. I liked her character, that was enough for me. Nice change from the likes of the average bland female protagonist.

I don't know what's worse. That Toriyama continues to thrust this character into the limelight or that we buy into it, as evidenced by the multiple threads with endless pages of discussion for each new tidbit. I honestly don't know if I'm more sick of Lightning because of the actual games or because of some on this board's backwards obsession with her...buuuuut we really hate her!

...This is what has become of the FFVII remake.
At the beginning of the game she wants to kill the Gods because they piss her off. At the end of the game she wants to do it for improved reasons.
Anyway, I just kind of realized that it surprises me that with the announcement of Agito, we haven't yet seen LR include a Seven costume for Lightning.
I don't think a lot of people play Final Fantasy to dress up characters in different costumes. I'd rather have a good game with interesting characters then a bikini skin.
Or we could enjoy this and enjoy Lightning hentai. Best of both worlds!
There is also a distinct lack of Rule 34 for her compared to other FF girls. Only ones who probably have even less coverage is II, III, VIII, and IX girls but that's a topic for another time.
Because we never really got a chance to. Its something other JRPGs allowed for ages now and its something I've always wanted in this series for as long as FFVII, my first FF. Shit, I hope Nomura let us dress up Noctis and the crew in FFXV. Dressing up characters in RPGs is incredibly addicting.

In her defense, if you aren't a Touhou, I@MS, or Precure character nowadays you aren't going to have much Rule 34 for them nowadays unless its some super popular anime like SAO or Attack on Titan or something. Even works on the more popular FFs died down.

Just give me a happy ending, even a shitty one with some satisfying gameplay and I'll be happy.
I hope they come out with some unorthodox ending.It least make it unique and different than a fluffy happy ending.unorthodox=/= sad ending, just something unexpected.
New fads sure explain how the less popular game series like Dead or Alive still gets many doujins and fapwork.
My understanding is that anime receives the bulk of fap material creation, with the occasional exception like Hatsune Miku and Idolmaster. Despite the attempts with all these fetish outfits, the "cosplay designs" are lacking in some way that just cannot compete with the better character designs of anime and other games. More simply, the game is not popular, Lightning doesn't really capture the interest of many, and pretending the amount of fap material doesn't reflect this (blaming the artists, who have no interest in her?) isn't going to negate her lack of popularity.

only popularity poll shes been ranked high, that i know of was only the FF heroine poll one, with Aerith in 2nd place, a character from a 16/17 year old game, i wouldnt call her popular just because shes the new thing and SE keeps shoving her down our throats

anyway, you all should be happy as all the costumes are free, unlike most great DOA costumes are DLC.

If this sells modestly he won't be relegated to mobile hell. What I can reasonably expect is he won't get a cartreblance to make a game now. He will have to have oversight.

Seriously, though, I can't be alone in this. There must be others out there who, in spite of XIII's disappointments, liked Lightning and were okay with the plot, but who just can't stand what XIII itself has become. It's so stupidly removed from where it began.

I'm definitely going to have to agree that, unless Toriyama is prevented from directing another Final Fantasy, the nightmare is not over.
Just wait until 2020 when FFXVI is announced with Toriyama as the director.
