I can't even watch anything in HD because the stream stutters. I went to different websites with HD feeds to see if it was just my shitty computer and shitty connection and.. nope. NBC is just ass.
BBC is publicly funded.
You are not the only one. I think it's an issue with Flash. the nbc stream eventually brings my firefox to a standstill unless I periodically close out the browser and re-open.

The mobile app uses flash if the adobe logo on the corner is any indication.

I'm not sure as I haven't tried that, but expatshield was really straightforward and has worked perfectly for me so far. Highly recommend it.
