Cricket is not very popular worldwide in terms of countries where it holds interest. If you're going to bring up population of India, you might as well say Badminton, Table Tennis, Dragon Boat Racing, Wushu are popular because of China.

it's funny we used to play it back in the day in gym class (mid 90s), with indoor soccer nets and the 3 pt line, and I always assumed it was some made up game by the gym teachers. only to have it seen later in the oympics lol, really awesome game to watch, even more fun to play. though rule difference in our gym game is we had to dribble like basketball, and used a volleyball.
edit: and like others posted above I always assumed that was the only "handball" game.
