I don't think it was hard to understand at all. Shakespeare, Industrial Revolution, some of the most recognisable music tracks in the world, Harry Potter, Mary Poppins, Peter Pan, The City of London, Churchill. . .easy stuff to get. British Culture is very easy to understand in my opinion, at least the stuff presented.

We even held back. Imagine if we'd spent more. No Deep Purple, Iron Maiden (whose biggest ever live audience is more than 3x the stadium audience of the Olympic Stadium), Led Zep, Rolling Stones, Elton John etc. We could have kept that shit coming theoretically. We even missed out Doctor Who because the athletes walked too damn slow!

____

David Bowie is too cool for that stuff. His absence was always to be expected.

Whoa what?

I appreciate this guy's frank discussion on this matter, and I completely agree with him.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2012/08/12/bernstein-usain-bolt-is-probably-doping-and-you-know-it/

he's just making shit up

“When people ask me about Bolt, I say he could be the greatest athlete of all time,” Carl Lewis told the Times of London. “But for someone to run 10.03 one year and 9.69 the next, if you don’t question that in a sport that has the reputation it has right now, you’re a fool. Period.”

[..]

Before the games in Beijing, Heredia told Germany’s Der Spiegel that, regarding the 100-meter final, “the winner will not be clean. Not even any of the contestants will be clean. There is no doubt about it, the difference between 10.0 and 9.7 seconds is the drugs.”

Bolt was returning from an injury. Let's just ignore the fact he broke the WR twice before that race shall we.

What are the odds that a tiny, island country suddenly dominates global competition…just because?

this is bordering on racist.

He had a heart attack while he was performing a concert a few years back and has retired for health reasons.

Wow, I had no idea :(

And yes, word is Dr Who was supposed to be in there, not sure if it was pre-recorded or if Matt Smith was actually in the stadium (find that hard to believe for some reason).

No, he's not just making shit up. Also, why are you not talking about the half dozen points he's makes in that article?

And no, that line about a tiny island country was not bordering on racist. You've got this entire sprinting program, from Jamaica, suddenly becomes dominant in a matter of years. That just doesn't happen. Did they just happen to find the best trainers on the planet earth and hire them?

As the guy who wrote that article points out, a lot of people are just blindly naive to this topic. Human beings do not suddenly start sprinting significantly faster than they ever did before. It does not happen. It happens because they use drugs to do it.

Sprinting is very popular in Jamaica and in other Caribbean nations (see James of Grenada, Sanchez of Dominican Republic, Trinidad and Tobago)

You don't need much equipment for sprinting or running long distances like the marathon(see Kenya, Ethiopia), you just need legs (or prosthesis for the Paralympics and Pistorius) .

You don't see those countries spending a lot of money in all the sports, just on athletics.

It was a montage of all eleven Doctors in chronological order with a live orchestral version of the theme played over the top.

Jamaica has performed well at the 100m dash since at least 1968. Nearly 50 years ago. It didn't start doing well overnight.

Ah, when people said The Dr was involved I kind of assumed it would be Smith doing something special, but then I figured they had managed to keep it very quiet which would have surprised me.

North Corea olympic team formed for just 56 athletes closed London 2012 with 4 gold medals and 2 bronzes , their best performance since Barcelona 92.

New "president" must be happy.

Yes, it's sad that they resort to unfounded doping allegations.

I came across this article earlier written about doping. It features a letter by Victor Conte who apparently headed up BALCO and provided a lot of performance enhancing drugs to athletes competing in the olympics. The following regiment was what Dwain Chambers was taking when he was caught and subsequently banned in 2003.

Your performance enhancing drug program included the following seven prohibited substances: THG, testosterone/epitestosterone cream, EPO (Procrit), HGH (Serostim), insulin (Humalog), modafinil (Provigil) and liothryonine, which is a synthetic form of the T3 thyroid hormone (Cytomel).

THG is a previously undetectable designer steroid nicknamed "the clear." It was primarily used in the off season and was taken two days per week, typically on Mondays and Wednesdays. Generally, these were the two most intense weight-training days of the week. The purpose was to accelerate healing and tissue repair. Thirty units (IU) of the liquid was place under the tongue during the morning time-frame. THG was used in cycles of "three weeks on and one week off."

Testosterone/epitestosterone cream was also primarily used during the off season. It was rubbed into the skin on the front of the forearm two days per week, typically Tuesdays and Thursdays. The dosage was ½ gram which contained 50mg of testosterone and 2.5mg of epitestosterone (20 to 1 ratio). The purpose was to offset the suppression of endogenous testosterone caused by the use of the THG and to accelerate recovery. The testosterone/ epitestosterone cream was also used in cycles of three weeks on and one week off.

EPO was used three days per week during the "corrective phase", which is the first two weeks of a cycle. Typically, it was on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It was only used once per week during the "maintenance phase" thereafter, typically this was every Wednesday. The dosage was 4,000 IU per injection. The purpose was to increase the red blood cell count and enhance oxygen uptake and utilization. This substance provides a big advantage to sprinters because it enables them to do more track repetitions and obtain a much deeper training load during the off season. EPO becomes undetectable about 72 hours after subcutaneous injection (stomach) and only 24 hours after intravenous injection.

HGH was used three nights per week, typically on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Each injection would contain 4.5 units of growth hormone. Once again, this substance was used primarily during the off season to help with recovery from very strenuous weight training sessions.

Insulin was used after strenuous weight training sessions during the off season. Three units of Humalog (fast-acting insulin) were injected immediately after the workout sessions together with a powdered drink that contained 30 grams of dextrose, 30 grams of whey protein isolates and 3 grams of creatine. The purpose was to quickly replenish glycogen, resynthesize ATP and promote protein synthesis and muscle growth. Insulin acts as a "shuttle system" in the transport of glucose and branch chain amino acids. There is no test available for insulin at this time.

Modafinil was used as a "wakefulness promoting" agent before competitions. The purpose was to decrease fatigue and enhance mental alertness and reaction time. A 200mg tablet was consumed one hour before competition.

Liothryonine was used help accelerate the basic metabolic rate before competitions. The purpose was to reduce sluggishness and increase quickness. Two 25mg tablets were taken one hour before competition. There is no test available for liothryonine at this time.

I just have a hard time believing that the guys racing in the 100m were 'naturally' better than a guy like Dwain Chambers who was jacked up on all that stuff listed above.

It doesn't diminish my respect for any of the athletes like Blake or Bolt, though. They still need to work their asses off to get as good as they are.

I remember seeing that match on tv, felt so sad for Chong Wei, the commentator called him the "Zidane of Malaysia" in terms of popularity.

You call it negativity, I call it journalism.

Calling it "negative press" is some feel good attack to avoid looking at problems.

Also anti-British agenda made me laugh, sorry there's no anti-British agenda.
What's that, British people too happy? We better shit on their parade.

We're well aware of our problems and don't need the French to tell us our business solely for the purpose of making us a bit more miserable.

Chambers obviously wasn't good enough and needed to get jacked up. He should have tried another sport. :lol

He had a heart attack while he was performing a concert a few years back and has retired for health reasons.

I think he's performed live a couple of times since his heart surgery. I seem to remember he performed with Arcade Fire at a concert and again with David Gilmour. But it's been a few years. I hope his health is alright. I would have flipped out if he'd been at the closing ceremony but if he's not up to it I don't blame him.

Me and my girlfriend were flipping out *so bad* when they started the Bowie montage. I thought for sure he was coming out! Then "Fashion" started and I was looking for him, but all I got was a bunch of supermodels. :-/

Even North Korea liked the Olympics! But not surprisingly rogue state's spirit of goodwill doesn't stretch to its southern neighbour

For a moment the wave of goodwill generated by the Olympics appeared to have rubbed off on the notoriously isolationist North Koreans as the leadership heaped praise on London 2012.

A statement released by the Korean Central News Agency today described the Olympics as a ‘sacred festival promoting friendship and unity’.

But, the surprisingly new found spirit of friendship disappeared quicker than a Usain Bolt sprint for Gold as the far left party went on to launch a vitriolic attack on its old foe - South Korea.

The rogue state described the South Korean government as ‘maniacs, traitors and human scum’, claiming it had used the Games to launch a propaganda war against North Korea.

Referring to South Korea, the statement read: 'The regime carried to London riff-raffs and human scum, a group of wicked men serving the policy of confrontation with the DPRK, and held a ‘photo show on human rights in the north’ in a street of London.

'The regime brought human rejects to the Olympics to escalate confrontation with the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea), not content with its attempted hideous terrorism for hurting the dignity of its supreme leadership.

'This is another grave politically-motivated provocation against the DPRK and an insult to the Olympic spirit desired by mankind.'

'The Olympics is the sacred festival of humankind desirous of promoting friendship and unity among countries and nations and achieving peace and progress.

'However, the south Korean regime of traitors only is resorting to mean and poor charade as slandering the DPRK and inciting confrontation with fellow countrymen even in London, quite contrary to the noble idea of Olympics.

The rogue state praised the efforts of its own athletes, who won four golds and two bronzes, saying: 'The world people are admiring the high spirit and might of the country of Mt Paektu which is emerging as a powerful and rich country under the leadership of the dear respected Kim Jong Un.'

But in the statement the regime also claimed that its neighbour had used the Games to launch a propaganda war against it.

It warned: 'The DPRK really meant it when it declared that it would wipe out those involved in hideous crimes and their backstage wire-pullers.

'The south Korean regime will be made to pay dearly for its despicable anti-DPRK smear campaign.'
:/

An interesting read. That's one hell of a regimen.

Yup. There was also this --

Conte, the BALCO mastermind who has provided nutrition and training advice to bronze-medal boxer Marlen Esparza, says what he actually told the Times was a little different. “What I actually said,” Conte said Friday, "was that of the top 20 athletes in each Olympic event, about 60% have used performance-enhancing drugs in the previous year during their preparations for the Games.”

“They’re continuing to use drugs,” Conte said. “If you do intense training from October through January, which is the offseason, in conjunction with testosterone or EPO, the gains you make in strength and speed will serve you in August.”

Glenn Pendlay, US olympic weightlifting coach, also had this to say on Reddit --

Results in weightlifting are much, much more impacted by PED's than with any other Olympic sport. Even more than something like the shot put. For instance, Olympic medalist and several times world champion in the discus and shot put John Godina (who is now a top throws coach also) observed during a conversation with me that Drugs impacted a throwers lifting numbers, like power clean and push press, by 15% or more, yet affected the throwing distance by only 5-7%.

Drugs are more of a problem in weightlifting than any other sport not because they are more widely used, but because they open a wider chasm between the user and the non-user.

Jon and Donny [strong American weightlifter types] are guys who HAVE dedicated their lives to lifting, who have put off the good paying jobs, the bank accounts, the easy life that our country can provide. Donny is 30 years old, he has been a full time lifter since he was 20. He has made the sacrifices. But, he is "in the club" that I spoke about earlier. He has lived with foreign athletes who actively made fun of him for trying to compete clean. He has been coached by foreign lifters who flat out told him that if he actually wanted to win, just go to Bulgaria for a year or two, he would be a world champion. He knows what is going on.

Very, very interesting article here:

For example, let’s assume that a talented NCAA sprinter has a testosterone ratio (testosterone: epitestosterone) of 1:1 which is considered normal, or average. The current WADA guidelines permit a ratio of up to 4:1. Given the fact that the only way for an NCAA sprinter to make any money sprinting is to win international competitions and garner endorsements, what reason could that NCAA sprinter possibly have for NOT quadrupling his testosterone ratio up to the maximum of 4:1? Using a number of undetectable steroid compounds, that same athlete would presumably see a major improvement in his sprint times without ever ‘testing positive’.

And this is the folly of drug testing: It gives ‘dirty’ athletes all the ammunition they need to proclaim themselves ‘clean’ — replete with Olympic level testing results.

That last sentence.... Hah! I'de like to see them try. The minute they attempt to "punish" South Koreans would give the green light for other countries to launch an attack on DPRK. They have been fear mongering for years, but as soon as they actually launch an attack, all bets are off

I really wouldn't like to see them try. Millions dead across the borders...

I thought a cool idea would be a GAF-lympics Committee competition, where we submit a mini bid for a host city in our home nations, including logo, mascot(s) and 3 or 4 main new venues or repurposed existing areas (like the Birds Nest, or marathon lap through old London town).

All gaffers vote for the winning bid.

Anyone think this would be kinda fun?
Aww noone? :l

Might start a thread about it anyway. ;p
