London riots spreading through UK

What does "bring your ballys" mean?

Like is it some sort of bag to put looted goods in?

Man this is really starting to get me worried about my g/f. She is in Stratford currently with her mom and sister and finishing up a vacation in the UK, set to leave back to the US Tuesday. Where is Stratford located near these areas?

Tourists don't vacation in the ghetto. They're fine.

Between the economic collapse, natural disasters, riots, protests, etc. I really do feel like the world is descending into hell.

You must not be old enough to remember the 80s, Cuban Missile Crisis or Teletubbies.

With the front-pages tomorrow reporting on the doubts surrounding the shooting, and the policy of letting the looting happen while they concentrated on "serious incidents" there's probably going to be another night of this :/

Why don't looters get shot? They are thieves. I really hate the way justice works against logic. In China these fuckers would be gunned down like the vermin they are.

Not exactly. I am saying that if someone accidentally dies (i.e., a bullet hits them the wrong way or wrong place) because they wouldn't listen to orders, that's just a sacrifice that had to happen for the better of London.

And really, do you think most Londoners are crazy or something? If they get mad that someone is killed in a fucking riot, then we might as well nuke London from orbit and be done with the entire city. I give London a little more credit than that on a whole.

This just sounds...completely backwards from the way I think.

I am trying to understand why people, as a whole, would get mad that rioters were put out of their misery. I know the current rioters would be mad (obviously), but they should be dealt with accordingly.

Because people are not like dogs we can shoot in the streets. There should be a rule of law.

Arrest them, take them through the system. Cops on mass shooting rioters in the street means the rule of law has failed. Cops bringing out guns at this time is just going to increase tensions.

This isn't some dictatorship where the politicians can send in tanks and the cops and kill with impunity.

So one robber breaking into multiple shops one after the other and setting them on fire would warrant having the police shoot him, but many doing the same should only warrant the police to stand in line.

Pinched a sweet from the pick 'n' mix? Sorry chap it's a face full of lead for you!

Or neither? How about taking down robber, cuffing him, then putting him in the back of a police van.

I took it to mean Stratford-Upon-Avon. I just assumed that as it's an obvious tourist destination.

It could be London I suppose. I'm not sure why they would want to go there.

I actually have no idea, I've never been to the UK.

I guess now that you mention it, maybe she is in Warwickshire, makes sense. Hopefully I'll hear from her tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads up guys.

These people are acting like dogs, though. And they are treating everyone else like dogs by blowing their shit up and injuring people. These are not peaceful protesters.

It's Shakespeare's birth place. Would they want to go and see that?

The police have batons and shields most of these dickheads run when the police can be assed to arrive at places getting looted. What madness would be unleashed if they suddenly turned into a death squad.

No Police commander of sane mind is going to allow live rounds to be used on looters.

Make no mistake most of these guys destroying their communities are fucking idiots but shooting them?

Is that the path we want to go down?

0309: More news from Westfield shopping centre: police have erected semi-permanent barricades and deployed armed officers and dogs. What are they expecting there?

0316: Westfield staff member says that police escorted staff out of the building and to the local taxi rank; nobody was allowed to leave alone. Warnings also given out about possible attacks.

0335: BBC staff have apparently been told to avoid Westfield (Shepherd’s Bush). Seems that police are expecting a concerted attack on the shopping centre, judging by earlier reports of barricades, dogs and armed police being deployed there.

Damn, this is still going on? What are they trying to do? Destroy the whole city?

Copycat stuff now, all the coverage of people walking out of shops unchallenged.

I expect there will be a 3rd night of it tomorrow.

That's only because you have an extremely limited perspective. There have always been natural disasters, riots, protests and turmoil somewhere at some point. Imagine how people felt during the height of either of the previous World Wars.

Why are some of my fellow Americans acting like this hasn't happened in the US multiple times? I'm sure this is nothing compared to the LA riots.

Also the papers tomorrow are reporting that ballistic tests on the bullet found in the police officer's radio was police issue. Duggan didn't fire on police, contrary to what the police said originally.

So that's also going to inflame things around Tottenham again. The Met's reputation was basically in tatters anyway, people don't trust em.

Get as much looted goods as possible.
Do these people have any manners at all? Did their mommy never tell them it is bad to steal?

These people truly are sarcomas of society. Like any disease, the best way to eradicate it is to kill it.

yeah, i'm just real pissed off that it appears a large number of people in the city actually think it's OK to run havoc, burn buildings to the ground and loot shops.

I dunno that there are alot of Gaffers that remember the riots of 4/29/92. Or they weren't in the LA area.

I was. It was...well, I hope this doesn't sound superfluous, but the closest I'll ever come to fighting in a war. Being made to hang out on a roof of a Korean market with a rifle, while a bunch of other store owner set up firing positions in the parking lots.

I'm pretty sure that Londoners of late 1940 had it worse.

Yeah, but back then there was more of a collective British identity and purpose right? Just like post-war America.

I don't know to either because I'm an American from the modern world. History gets distorted. I mean America had the McCarthyism, Vietnam, Cold War, and other stuff that I think is worse than "oh, we need to stop going to war all of the time for no reason, bump SS to 70+, increase taxes, but we won't". Certainly living through nightly bombings from Nazi Germany is worse than that.

Or let's even flip sides here. Imagine being a peaceful person starting a family living in Tokyo or Dresden during WWII. That's more like literal hell. Not to mention the concentration camps.

Well, I mean postwar, America was like ,"Fuck yeah, we're America? We kicked ass! We can do anything!"

I'm sure Britain had got to be "Fuck yeah, we're Brits! We stood strong while the rest of you pommy bastards rolled over to the Nazi's!"

I think the real irony is that most American World War vets that I have personally ever spoken to never had even a gleam of "America Fuck Yeah!" They are probably the most humble, soft-spoken, and generally nice people I have ever met. In fact, most people in general -- vet or not -- from that era are like that.

The closest to "America Fuck Yeah" I could find from this era are outdated stereotypes of how good American manufacturing is, with something like: "You don't want to buy a Japanese TV. It won't last. American TVs are better." And even then, they usually provide a caveat: "At least, that's how it used to be. Maybe things have changed now."

You and every generation of cognizant humans before you.

I'm not saying this is a cheery subject, but there are a lot of people doing a lot of things, and it's all out in the open for a worldwide audience. Try to take reality in stride.
