Stop talking about how awesome Safari is! I just moved all my shit over to Chrome for tab syncing on iPad and iPhone and now y'all are making me want to get into the iOS beta. :)

Notification center does not respond to any email I receive, really annoying.
I have it set up as banner, and have notifications turned on. Anyone else experiencing this?

You're not sending emails to yourself are you? It wouldn't show banners on emails I sent myself in the GM but from others it worked.

Just to check: My mom bought a Macbook Air recently, so she gets ML for free. Can her copy of ML ONLY be installed on her computer, or can i make use of it to? The language on the sign-up form suggested they only want ML being installed for free on qualifying Macs, but if it will work on both our machines that'd be super. I think it wouldn't matter and I should be able to install it on both machines fine. Just want to make sure. I have visions of my mom trying to install it and being like "What do you mean the code was used already?!"

I'm dumb. I can't figure out how to tell how much of ML has downloaded in the Mac App Store. It seems to be coming at a brisk pace according to Activity Monitor.

click on the purchases tab and it should show it downloading with the speed and amount of data already downloaded.

I gotta try out the speed of Safari but is there anyway for pinning tabs? I really need to have 5 web pages open at once for my work.

I guess not getting a code is better than getting a used code. I guess. :(

Hmm, yeah. Getting a used one would be a pretty big tease.

Yeah, not sure how that happens. I got the first email with a password locked PDF, then the second with the code to unlock said PDF. Unlocked it, typed the code into the app store and it said it was used.

I just hope it doesn't take apple support a week to get back to me. :)

yes, just make sure you make a copy of the installer in another location. when the update finishes, it deletes the installer. you can always redownload on the other non-mountain-lion computer though if you sign into the mac app store with the same account.

i'm honestly not sure if you can do this within safari and cannot check since i am at work. however, i am pretty sure you can use automator to do this for any version of safari (well, a version with tabs).

Trying to install the iMovie and iPhoto ML updates from the App Store. They downloaded fine, but won't install. The app also won't let me quit because "OS updates must complete before quitting". What do?
Any help guys? It won't even let me restart because the app won't quit. Should I just hard-reset?

The Mountain Lion license allows the owner to install it on any Mac they 'control'. So yes, you can pretty much legally install it on any Mac you have admin access to.

Also Apple OSX releases don't have serial numbers associated with them.

The file is saved as 'OSX Mountain Lion' in your Applications folder as long as you dont actually go through installing it. You can also redownload it from the App Store.

Makes me wonder if they're just using a list of codes and can't remember where they left off or something. You'd think they'd have a better system in place...

When I open Pages and TextEdit they now take me to the "iCloud/On my Mac" window. However, 100% of the time I open these apps I want a blank document since when I want to open a specific file I'll use spotlight or finder. Is there a way to make them directly open a blank document instead, like how it was previously?

Is everybody's Game Centre working okay?
Mine hangs on the log-in screen and I've tried multiple approaches to getting it going with no success :(

Oh, what is X11 actually for exactly?

Lord Error

Due to some stupid update problem for Imovie and Iphoto (I deleted them as they wouldn't update from my account for some reason, and now I can't redownload them) I wanted to install ML clean. However, when I prepared the USB drive with the disk image contents on it, every time I try to boot from that disk, whole computer freezes.

but no Airplay for us which is complete bullshit, Apple trying to seriously force people to throw away 2 year old macbook pros for locked out features? I eagerly await the hack
Try AirParrot and get back to us on how smoothly it handles mirroring and video. You need an i5/7 machine with hardware h264 encoding. It's not an arbitrary feature lockout.

It's a fair complaint that this feature only works on the newest computers since 2010 machines feel fast enough, but also remember that Apple had to stick with Core 2 Duo processors for much longer than they should have had to because of Intel and nVidia's stupid fight over needing to use Intel's GPUs, and of course Intel's GPUs sucked so Apple didn't move on to i5s until much later than the rest of the industry. Apple even rushed out a GPU switching feature in the OS that required shut downs to switch until they got it right later with automatic GPU switching.

Also, I have a 2010 MacBook Air, so I definitely feel your pain on this. I tried to get this feature to work in the betas and was super bummed when I realized what was going on. I just don't go right into thinking everything is a conspiracy theory.

I think something is up with my install because it has -8 minutes remaining.

Edit: Just jumped to about 20 minutes. I have no idea what is going on.

Mine did the same thing. It should finish at the end of that 20 minutes.

I got it downloaded and installed this side of midnight, so that's an improvement on Lion. Now that Spotlight's finished reindexing it definitely seems nice and fast.

Apparently the only way is turning off "Documents & Data" in the iCloud preferences? This sucks. I want to use iCloud for some of my documents but having an obligatory "open file" window prompt whenever I open those apps, then having to manually select "new document" is an annoyance to me. Hopefully there's some terminal trick to change that.

anyone know how long it takes to get the free upgrade? just submitted my claim, I'd get an email by the end of the day right? (damn, wish I could have done this in the morning at work but I didn't have my serial)

Does it work like in Chrome then?
I just want the tabs to not take up that much space.

How come my fan is kicking in again after the upgrade to Mountain Lion?

Before, I had disabled Flash in Chrome and so my fan didn't kick in 90% of the time but now it does it again, why so? What were the app to check what takes up CPU?

Also, how can I change between tabs and get the new overview in Safari, what kinda gesture do I need to pull off?

I wanted to sync my Notes between all my devices too, but in iCloud on iPhone it tells me to create an iCloud email (@me) but I already have an iCloud mail and user. =/

Well official support for rss feeds seems to be gone now, I used the mail app in Lion as my rss reader but that feature is no longer present in mountain lion, so what do you guys use for rss reader? Any recommendations?

I would just use Google Reader in your browser of choice

I'm moving in a couple weeks and I was planning on getting an Apple TV the day I moved, so I guess I'll take the plunge if no one else has by then

X11 refers to the X Window System Version 11, a client-server protocol used on UNIX type operating systems for GUI stuff. Xorg Server, XFree86, XQuartz, and Apple's old "X11" install are all X11 implementations. That's why statements like "support shifted from X11 to XQuartz" don't make sense.

Basically, linux stuff like GIMP compiled to run in OSX but not coded for its native GUI will need it.

it should. if you go into automator (it's an application on every mac), you can build an automation that would open urls. just create an applicaition icon for the automation and drag it into your dock. then, click the icon and it will open safari with the 5 urls.

or, alternatively, you can create a folder of bookmarks in safari and set it so that a click on the folder automatically opens all of the bookmarks in 5 tabs. you can set the folder to do this by going to All Bookmarks (the leftmost icon of the bookmarks bar) and checking the auto-click checkbox for the specified folder.

of course, this is all assuming there isn't a setting in safari that allows you to open up 5 pages automatically every time you start it. i have no idea.

could spotlight be indexing? your mac will run slow while it does this initially.
I wanted to sync my Notes between all my devices too, but in iCloud on iPhone it tells me to create an iCloud email (@me) but I already have an iCloud mail and user. =/
for some bizarre reason, the notes app still uses an imap email address to sync across devices. it must be because it was rooted in the mail app previously. i hope they change it to icloud soon. i'm not sure what your problem is here. can you not just register your notes to sync through an email account on your iphone?

I'm trying Safari 6 (not in ML though), and it seems nice and fast but not faster than Firefox with pipelining turned on

Is there a hack to force links to open in background? Specifically Google Reader items and Wallbase wallpapers. I use a Firefox setting called loadDivertedInBackground, googling around it seems like "defaults write com.apple.Safari TargetedClicksCreateTabs -bool true" is the only thing but that just forces windows to open as tabs

Just looked at MacRumors....

Apple support staff have acknowledged the difficulties and are advising customers that they may need to wait up to three days to receive replacement codes

Fuuuuuuuuck. 9 hours and not a thing. I wish they could just auto-detect the MBP Retina systems and just let you download it, since it's impossible to buy it BEFORE June 11th.
