Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Move your Mac even further ahead

Does Notification Center support FB? I thought it was just Twitter.

The (still not edited/redacted) verge review that mentions Facebook incessantly certainly didn't help with the confusion in regards to this being delayed 'till fall.

This was obviously wrote weeks in advance from the DP or GM without any concern for even checking what the retail release actually contained. For shame Verge. It actually says as a mid review header in massive orange text "FACEBOOK INTEGRATION IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST NEW ADDITIONS TO MOUNTAIN LION"

Notification center does not respond to any email I receive, really annoying.
I have it set up as banner, and have notifications turned on. Anyone else experiencing this?

I discovered apparently you have to have mail running in the background to get notifications? It doesn't just "push" ala iOS, although Calendar/Messages et al does. That really annoys me.

i don't think the facebook integration was ever delayed. it was first announced to be coming in the fall.

I believe DP4 came with FB integration additionally leading to the belief/rumours it would launch with it until it was announced after WWDC that it would be fall?

Regardless, it makes the verge review of 10.8 even more baffling then...

I wish they could just auto-detect the MBP Retina systems and just let you download it, since it's impossible to buy it BEFORE June 11th.

Truth. It should have been pushed out in the Apple Software Updater. There's been some rMBP and new Air-specific updates to Lion applied through the Updater, why the hell couldn't they just have rolled out Mountain Lion the same way?

Oh yeah, one really neat part about X11 is the ability for a program to run on Computer A's processor and memory while showing its window on Computer B across the network(read: internet) and taking keyboard and mouse input from Computer B. Same for programs running on Computers C, D, and E. Programs are considered "clients" while the display is considered the "server".

...and this was doable since the 90s.

Exactly. I find it ridiculous that we all spent thousands of dollars on a computer, and now have to wait in a line that's (possibly) 3 days long for what is basically $20 coupon.

I'm patient though, so the wait doesn't bother me.

yeah, the verge review messed up big time, because the facebook integration was announced for mountain lion at wwdc and was always said to be coming in the fall. i just checked an article published on that day to confirm.
MacLife said:
Unfortunately, Facebook won’t be part of the OS X Mountain Lion party when it launches next month -- it’s promised as “coming this fall,” presumably alongside iOS 6 itself.

it couldn't have been done through a software update because you need to have it registered with your app store account as a purchase, which is what the redemption code does. this is to make things easy for you in the future if you want to reinstall mountain lion or install it on another machine.

the new safari reader button is ugly. what was wrong with the old way?
It is pretty loud. If they wanted to change it they should have just greyed it out on pages where it wouldn't work and made it active when it would. The big blue button is slightly obnoxious.

it should. if you go into automator (it's an application on every mac), you can build an automation that would open urls. just create an applicaition icon for the automation and drag it into your dock. then, click the icon and it will open safari with the 5 urls.

or, alternatively, you can create a folder of bookmarks in safari and set it so that a click on the folder automatically opens all of the bookmarks in 5 tabs. you can set the folder to do this by going to All Bookmarks (the leftmost icon of the bookmarks bar) and checking the auto-click checkbox for the specified folder.

of course, this is all assuming there isn't a setting in safari that allows you to open up 5 pages automatically every time you start it. i have no idea.
could spotlight be indexing? your mac will run slow while it does this initially.

for some bizarre reason, the notes app still uses an imap email address to sync across devices. it must be because it was rooted in the mail app previously. i hope they change it to icloud soon. i'm not sure what your problem is here. can you not just register your notes to sync through an email account on your iphone?

That's not what I mean. I want the pin feature of Chrome, were the tabs are minimized in size on the top bar. :)

Inaugural post after my 6 month ban..

Loving ML so far. Rock solid, fast, the the large and small tweaks are welcome additions. Loving the iCloud integration, iOS app syncing (especially notes, makes things so much easier), the sharing sheets which makes messaging/emailing any file a one click process, improved update system, iMessage, notifications, SAFARI which is MUCH improved, and other tiny things I noticed but now forget. Dock even looks much better, lights are slicker and finally rid of the overdone reflections which are now much more subtle, etc. Oh, and system-wide airplay is worth more than $20 in itself. Anyone who owns any iOS device (or multiple) will greatly benefit from the improved syncing, which to me is pretty much the most critical thing going forward when it comes to computing paradigms. It should be irrelevant what device you're using, your information should always be synced between everything.

No, this OS isn't a revolution, but it's a significant improvement, an important step forward and a no-brainer at the price.

PS- Oh, and as usual, Gizmodo is the odd man out, with typical sensational, link-baiting bullshit by Jesus Diaz, just for the sake of being different. I love how he proclaims as fact that 'most users will not find it a worthwhile upgrade even for $20' when pretty much every single other reviews has stated its a no-brainer. Please stop grouping that garbage tabloid sites with other tech sites that actually are serious about what they say and convey a sincere and honest opinion. He actually recommends that people 'save their coins'- we're talking $20 here for a new OS. Also, my personal impressions, and that of every single other review I've read has stated that its faster, yet of course he states the opposite. Again, garbage link-baiting bullshit.

Bought my new MacBook Air last week. Applied for my code about 7 hrs ago and have heard nothing. Is there a trick to getting it faster?

Or put in another $10 and got a delicious Italian meal.

but a delicious Italian meal wouldn't include a burger! :(

in all seriousness i spent an hour troubleshooting why the OS wouldn't install over Lion, then a coworker came by with ML on a USB drive that eventually worked. an hour later and i'm distinctly underwhelmed. it seems neither faster nor slower, and some of my apps are having issues.

a burger - especially one made with choice cuts of rib eye, sirlion, brisket and chuck smashed over a hot griddle - would've pleased me to no end.

They're not. This would be like a Service Pack for Windows, if it was Windows, IMO.

I love this particular troll. Last I checked, Windows service packs didn't have 200+ new features. They're pretty much security updates with no front-facing changes. But don't let me challenge your incredible, well thought-out insight. This should be free cause service packs are free, right? Brilliant way twist the price advantage into something negative.

One hell of a service pack there. Please point me to the Windows equivalent.

200 features? does any of that include having a shitty install that made me long for an XP [Press F8 for additional drivers] install directive? Cause that's a lot more informative than the garbage I saw.

wait, oh. that's number 98, right after Sina Wiebo integration. YES. been waiting for that like, forever.

Where do you configure power nap? I bought a MacBook air around Christmas time, and I can't find any spot for power nap. I thought all of the MacBook airs and notebooks with SSD drive after mid 2011 used power nap.

I love how people toss around this 200+ features thing like its that big a deal. Most of them are unbelievably minor changes, or things that should have been there in the first place (Looking at you, Launchpad search). Hell, two of them are features that were in OS X but removed in Lion.

Its not that I disagree with you - its more of an expansion pack than a service pack (though saying its as big a deal as a full Windows release would be absolutely ludicrous). But tossing around '200+ new features' like we should all bow down at the awesome generosity of Apple is a little much.

Feature #105: renaming iCal to Calendar
Feature #106: removing the line of thread from Calendar, formerly iCal

This really is a feature packed upgrade. Lemme go back to Siracusa's treatise on the OS before I comment further.

In defense of Apple it's only been a year since Lion. How much can you put in that is worthwhile?

It's like expecting an EA sports game to be more than a few core features and thoughtful tweaks.

And let's face it iOS is their bread and butter these days

Can anyone confirm this bug?

After waking on sleep and seeing the login screen, the clock in the upper right corner is in 12h mode instead of the chosen 24h one. Everywhere else it's fine.

Had the same problem with Lion and now with Mountain Lion.

I'm sure they have to be thinking about OS11 right? I'm pretty happy with OSX as it is but I don't love it or anything (Expose and Preview are the only features that I think are amazing)

True, but how much of this couldn't have just been in a 10.7.5 update?

Honestly, I wouldn't care if it added 0 features. The improved performance is worth $20 for me.

The extra shit is just icing on the cake.

X11 refers to the X Window System Version 11, a client-server protocol used on UNIX type operating systems for GUI stuff. Xorg Server, XFree86, XQuartz, and Apple's old "X11" install are all X11 implementations. That's why statements like "support shifted from X11 to XQuartz" don't make sense.

Basically, linux stuff like GIMP compiled to run in OSX but not coded for its native GUI will need it.
Oh yeah, one really neat part about X11 is the ability for a program to run on Computer A's processor and memory while showing its window on Computer B across the network(read: internet) and taking keyboard and mouse input from Computer B. ... So now I feel incredibly clueless for having known precisely none of this!
Many thanks for the explanation, I now realise deleting it probably isn't the best idea :)

so now that my MBP appears to be running with some svelte, do i gamble on my rock-solid Lion install on my hackintosh and start anew with ML?

i'd rather nap right now.

Seriously. I spend $20 in a break on lunch and a pint. For something that's going to make mine and my wife's laptop run better for a year with a few new features it's alright by me.

So I'm on ML now. Instal took about 30 minutes. maybe longer.

I always forget how slow the machine feels at the beginning when spotlight indexing needs to be started from scratch.

It seems to be running smoothly now.

Making the jump from Snow Leopard to this one. Will I see much performance improvements on a 13" MBP from '11? Really not that excited for the iOS crud, but if the performance is there I don't really care all that much.
Also, is Safari updated independent of the OS or will it be different/better after having installed ML, because Safari fucking sucks on SL for me.

Anyone have any issues with CS6 and Mountain Lion? I haven't upgraded yet, it's the main thing holding me back. Apologies if this has already been asked and answered.

It's in the energy saving settings after you installed the software update.

Sounds like a nifty feature. I'm trying it out tonight, let's see if I have some mail waiting in the morning.

iOS is OS 11, people just weren't aware. Actually, I don't think they will ever make a product branded OS 11. They would need to be in a pretty dire situation to completely get rid of the OS X branding, and also be unable to move it under the iOS branding for some reason.

Darwin is here to stay, there have been no major breakthroughs on kernel design in recent years that are incompatible with Unix like kernels, and its Mach core is certainly flexible enough to add yet another personality layer in adition to the existing BSD layer, if they needed to go that route too.
