Mac OS X Mountain Lion. Move your Mac even further ahead

Back in business! Running OS X 10.6.3 right now, downloading the 6.8 software update so that I can try to upgrade to ML again. Running Snow Leopard again is pretty hilarious. Safari is really bad, and the huge system traffic light buttons feel comical in retrospect. Oh and the glorious candy scrollbars, the inverted (non-bouncy) scrolling, etc. Anyway, glad the external disc drive worked, now i'm hoping ML will. :D

What's up with Safari constantly reloading pages?

For example, say I'm on GAF, click a thread, read, swipe back there is a substantial pause while it reloads the entire page. Why can't it just use the cached version and be instant? Happens on any site, reddit included. Frustrating having to open everything in a new tab.
 
Ever since I updated to Mountain Lion a weird bug has been happening in Chrome. Animated .gifs embedded in gaf posts don't animate. I've been really unhappy with Chrome on Mac ever since I started using my new MacBook Air. First there was the system locking bug, which still hasn't been actually fixed; they just disabled hardware acceleration all together to avoid it. In my experience, this "fix" has resulted in general poor performance. I'd like to use Chrome because I use it everywhere else and it's convenient but it just in a bad state right now. I may just end up switching to Safari but I was hoping to avoid that.

Safari asks the webserver if the page has been updated. If it says no it does not reload, if it says yes, it does.

Unless Safari is resetting your position in the scrolling of the page (which would be a bug), I don't personally see why Safari double checking to make sure the page is the same is bad. But there is no way to disable the behavior at the moment, or likely ever. On my computer, unless the page has changed, the only thing I notice is a quick little swoosh over the URL, on GAF that is typically caused by the reloading of the advertisements.
 
I would like to say: Got my new MacBook Pro last night! Huzzah!

Has Lion on it: God damn it! Yeah, I know Mountain Lion is free for me, but I still have to download it. And I just migrated last night. I just want to play with my new computer :(

Why did you migrate before you updated? Were you so eager that you just couldn't wait?

Because I might swipe back several times on one page as I read things. Every time I have to wait several seconds while it reloads the entire god damn page. It wasn't like this in Lion.

It did on my system, in fact it was worse because Lion would forget how far down I had scrolled, at least the first 2 versions of Safari on Lion. The reloading is completely unavoidable since EvilLore operates the site using advertising which will always request a reload.

Sorry, wish I had a more pleasing answer.

Well if it did it wasn't as bad, otherwise I would have had a moan about it. This is what caches are for!

Well I might have to switch then. From memory I didn't like Chrome's scrolling behaviour, but that might have changed now...

It doesn't do that on my 2009 macbook pro. Safari is as fast as anything and swiping between loads of tabs is instantaneous. I even deleted Chrome it's that good.

Same here, I took Chrome off my dock. I also love the in-built share button since so many websites have wonky sharing settings.

No doubt Safari is faster but I do wonder if the sense of speed is partly amplified by that zippy accelerating progress bar they added :)

I think he means swiping back as in using the back gesture. Going into a thread and then swiping back to the topics list.

Everything feels faster. Loading, scrolling, switching tabs. It's like I got a new machine. I'm really impressed.

The loading bar should have a little multicoloured particle explosion animation with a quick uplifting choir crescendo to give it the full effect. ;)

don't forge that cloud icon in the nav bar. makes Safari seem lighter and less resource intensive than those other non-Apple (boo) browsers.

middle click (three fingers on trackpad from BTT) for opening a link in a new tab (disable the three finger, one tap "look up" function). and then swipes or BTT "tip taps" to switch between tabs. I've been using this for years and it works well.

Aww man, I love my 3 finger lookup.

Any way to do it without BTT?
 
Figured someone might get a kick out of this... My 2006 MacBook was finally resurrected today thanks to a friend who gave me their computer with a dead logic board.

It's one of the early 2011 models. The first ones with Sandy Bridge.
 
Does anybody have experience with buying new batteries for their macbook? I found some sellers that seem like good quality batteries on ebay and amazon, but not entirely sure. Don't wanna pay 110$ for an Apple replacement..

I don't have any experience changing batteries, but I'd bite the bullet and get it direct from Apple for the peace of mind. It's not worth it to save a few bucks and potentially have your battery explode a couple months later.

I had fixed this in Safari 5 by turning off multiple process support in Safari. The refresh drove me nuts, because I'd have it when switching back to a tab that I hadn't used in a while—especially annoying when those tabs were ones where I was writing something, and the refresh reset the text box.

I've not used Safari 6 enough yet to know if that's still an issue, and if that's still a fix.

The moment I saw those languages whooshing by, I literally yelled out YESSSSS. :lol A PRAM reset fixed it for me. Weird issue in ML tbh.

But man, i'm loving it. Apart from what feels to be a slower space-switching animation, it's all very slick and smooth. Safari is great in every regard except for the removal of a loader indicator on each individual tab. Other than that it's damn near perfect.

Still sucks that they haven't fixed the bloody right click method they fucked up in Lion. Snow Leopard had it perfect. You could two finger tap and have the option pane appear instantly (whereas now there's a full second or so delay) AS WELL AS physically click the right corner of the trackpad. Now you have to pick either-or, and either way the two finger tap implementation pales in comparison to SL. BTT can be used to fix all this of course, just a little gripe which was noticeable to me coming from the SL install disc to ML.

One feature I love though, is the ability to jump straight into the guest user from the idle screen. I usually enable the screensaver through a hot corner and just leave it that way all night. Issue is if someone else wants to get on in my absence, they can't, sort of rendering having a guest user option pointless for someone like me. That's a great little feature they added. BUT, funny glitch when I actually tested it out for the first time (jumping from my user to guest);

Actually looked pretty cool, and stayed that way. To be fair, I had hundreds of GB's flowing on my main user, so that might've played a part in enabling that glitch.
 
So, I've been seriously considering backing up my laptop (using Carbon Copy Cloner), wiping the OS X partition, doing a clean install of Mountain Lion and then reinstalling the stuff that I need. I've accumulated so much crap over the years. I copied my user account from my dad's eMac (summer 2003) to my iBook (December 2003) and then transferred it to my MacBook Pro (February 2007) and then copied that to my current MacBook Pro (summer 2010). It'd be nice to start off fresh again. I'd keep around the bootable copy incase there's anything that I really need off of it.
 
Slower animation? So it's not just me? I don't remember it taking so long to "park" itself. It's annoying since you can't do anything in the new space until the animation finishes.
 
do it. those saying that there's no advantage gained via a clean install should have a stick poked in their eye. it fixed issues i had on my year-old MBP, and restoring apps and settings from a cloned backup was rather easy.

if you want to automate the process, you could instead use Migration Assistant to transfer over your apps and settings to Mountain Lion - most stable, best performing, polished, feature-rich version of OSX yet.

you're right - i just noticed they tweaked the easing timing when moving horizontally across the spaces. it definitely doesn't 'snap' any more except when pulled out into Mission Control; there the timing appears more linear.

Oh, I know about Migration Assistant :P That's what I used previously :P I might just want to start completely fresh and then only reinstall/copy over what I need. It'd be great to start fresh when I go back to school in the fall.

Feels nice to do some spring cleaning. Just make sure to backup everything before you decide to delete things..
 
Well this is entertaining...

Safari 6 as mentioned has removed 'backspace' to go back in favour of using gestures.

Except, on older Macs that don't have multi touch, gestures in Safari are disabled.

Awesome...
