He's probably unlocked some of the later kart options. The difference is enough to get a good advantage against the default options.

Getting out front early with a banana peel or green turtle shell in tow is so important. Once you get caught up in the fighting between 3rd-8th or so its almost impossible to escape

Its just a clusterfuck back there!

Also...every time CB is behind me I have an endless supply of red turtle shells up my ass. When I am behind him I am lucky to get a green one! game is trash!

I played a couple of games and didn't get it at all. You kinda have to look into it beforehand, unfortunately. Although, they've given us some stuff to help with the learning curve these days.
