Mafia: The Old Country Releases on August 8 (linear, narrative-driven game priced at $49.99/€49.99/£44.99)

This year keeps on delivering small well priced games. Fuck MS, Nintendo and every other similar company and fuck anyone supporting the 80+ euro/dollar trash. Day one just because of its price.

Man that looks lame af. Nothing like the amazing Mafia 2.

But I already knew this studio doesnt have what it takes.

Its all scripted shit with barely any options for the player.

Not too big on the sicily thing either, give me new york mafia

A Mafia game, that's not open world?

I'm old country.
Yeah, not sure if I like that. :messenger_neutral:

The only one that was non-linear was Mafia 3 and its the one people like the least.

Mafia 1 and 2 were all linear games and better for it.
So id rather they have this be a linear game set in an open world than try doing open world shite just to bloat the game.

But Mafia 1 and 2 didnt have open world bloat. You played them right?

It was just an awesome backdrop for the lineair story, and it made for a more immersive experience.

You know this is coming from Take-Two right?

So the same as this.
Its a Linear game in an open world.
You go from mission to mission, the open world is just a back drop.
Mafia 3 was almost Ubisoft like with the whole take over this district shit grinding to get the actual story.

Visually it looks fine, combat seems to look good too. It's gonna be more linear and not like 3, which is a big plus. The repetitive nature of the game was terrible.

That being said, it seems more like Indiana Jones, Uncharted, even RDR than Mafia to me. Bit odd, haha.

I was going by the original (And best..)

Not those shitty remakes.

Exactly. I don't know why we are trying to twist their own FAQ.

"Does it feature an open world? No" seems clear enough. If they were just trying to say it's a linear story set in an open world, they could just as easily say that.

I think this is just a smaller game in scope and the price reflects that. And that's fine. Refreshing, even.

It's probably in the style of Uncharted 4. More space than the average corridor games prior.

one of the only games outside of DS2 and GTA6 I'm interested in, and now GTA6 is next year it just leaves 2 games to look forward to.

it wasn't really what i expected though from that trailer, I'm intrigued because it looks unique, but it also isn't giving off the mafia vibe, maybe not a good trailer, but i'd still play something that's unique then the regular slop that AAA games peddle these days so either way I'm in, I love the mafia games

Yes and this game is closer to Mafia 1 and Mafia 2.
Mafia 1 had a free roam mode but the story was told in a linear way just like this game.
Mafia 1 isnt actually considered an Open World game by todays standards.

The developer panel is happening right now.
Im surprised people didnt get what the developers were saying by its not an open world game.

Literally the devs said they were inspired after redoing Mafia 1 DE and decided they were going to make the game with a very very similar in structure to that.
They even brought back the funny mechanic of cars breaking down.

What i don't understand is Take-two own 2k...

So like why not just gift these guys the GTA6 engine, shit it could even be the RDR2 ver and just let them build an awesome mafia game with that tech.

Mafia 1 remake and mafia 3 still have weird visual issues and while it was a different studio, mafia 2 was not perfect at launch either.

plus R* can fill the old school crime family loop and have the trio of titles, Mafia (crime family) , GTA (which is more heists now) and RDR (Western)

especially since L.A Noire is dead

If it's 10-15 hours and reviews decently I might grab it on release (depending on the state of PC port).

I did like the first two games quite a bit. Hopefully they will get music right.

They would have to learn to develop in a new game engine without having the support of the OG engineers as said engineers are busy working on Grand Theft Auto.
RDR2 and GTAV were all hands on deck dev titles, they didnt/dont have spare employees to onboard a whole new studio.

It would make development multiple times harder and the game would likely end up in development hell.

So it does or does not have a open world?

I'm not talking about a sandbox.

Mafia 1 has an open world. Mafia 2 has an open world. Both have lineair stories but allow the player to explore the world.

Mafia 3 is a sandbox game (never bothered with it)

It all comes down to cost and resources.

We are lucky to even get this game, realistically speaking.

No open world full of meaningless shit I'm somewhat forced to do? That's great. People had enough of that. I will preorder. I want to send a signal that this sandbox nonsense, where every game and it's cousin needed to have it, has gone far enough. Who needs another game where you spend time collecting hidden stamps or whatever meaningless stuff they want to hide, instead of a good game that is a well directed straight forward experience? I'm almost 40, married and a parent, with a busy job. I respect games that respect my time.

All these people talking about having "options" and "freedom" in their games: mostly they are serving you busywork and the illusion of freedom, with the latter being just padding.

Why? There is nothing wrong with the visuals.
it's got nothing to do with visuals.

The RAGE engine is just better and has better tech in terms of things like euphoria and most likely AI, and clearly handles open worlds 1000x better.

the point was to have another franchise under their belt as well. Mafia perfectly suits rockstar, instead of those dumb Grove Street games, they could have pumped money to these guys and given the franchise that rockstar flare (similar to what they did with max payne 3).

Mafia 3 was a bit of a dog show at launch in regards to its engine hiccups.

That's why they would invest in the development.

You spend money to make money.

Having an open world essentially just to give context to the story -ie. without feeling the need to fill it up with random shit to do- worked really well for Mafia 1 & 2 imo. I think they would have been lesser games without the open world setting and would have been lesser games if they were 'sandbox' games.

Old Country is being reported as both 'not open world' and 'more like Mafia 1 & 2 than Mafia 3', so I'm unclear if they actually mean there is no open world at all or if they just mean it's not full of random shit to do.
