Mafia: The Old Country Releases on August 8 (linear, narrative-driven game priced at $49.99/€49.99/£44.99)

That last shotgun blast to that guy, I hope they include those occasional Max Payne like cinematic shots based on the final kill in a room and it isnt just fancy-ing up the trailer. It looks so cool. It happens during the fight where you shoot the lantern on the ground as well.

It's a short trailer, which has no gameplay.

There's gameplay there. Not a lot, but those aren't all scripted cutscenes. I mean, it's titled "Gameplay Trailer," after all.

Judge Magister captured a few bits of it, if you don't feel like watching it again:

And this from Musilla:

D1.

Love this series, and found the game to look visually stunning in this Trailer. I really hope it controls (much) better than Mafia DE however.. gunplay looks almost identical in this video, felt that extreme aim stiffness by just watching.

Exactly. I don't know why we are trying to twist their own FAQ.

Well..because they said this

"I think the way that we would describe Mafia 1 and 2, and I think a lot of fans would, is it's a linear adventure that's set in a world around you that you can go off the beaten path and explore, but really the game's taking you down that path of the story. So I think if you use Mafia 1 or 2 as touch points of what it's like, that's certainly closer than Mafia 3."

And yes, that means it's not quite an open-world title, at least not in the "strictest sense", per Cox. Baynes added, "The way I describe it is you're not going to be playing Mafia: The Old Country and going off and doing endless side quests and doing activities in the world.

"We want players to go through and experience a story, but set in this beautiful world. And if you are going along a path and want to go over here and explore, in many cases, you can do that because the world exists around you. But we're encouraging you to go through the story.

These bums never patched Mafia Remake for 60 fps even though that game came out only 1 month before the PS5/SX

I really find that developer apathy to be shameful, knowing full well how clunky that game is to play at 30 fps.

Was hoping they would announce an update for it today but silly me.

Not that long. Mafia 1 and 2's main story were about 10-12 hours each, roughly.

There was some gameplay in the second trailer, the one labelled age-restricted in the OP. You have to view it on YT. I'll post it here again, see if I have better luck somehow.

I like the graphics, they setting, etc but I'm sure the gameplay is going to be clunky like the other games. Sure hope this has a Performance mode on PS5 Pro because Mafia 1 remake is unplayable for me at 30 fps

Yeah, I hope they tune up the controls a bit, as I did find them a little wonky at times when playing DE 1 & 2. However, I think I have a lot more tolerance for this sort of thing than you do, because I found both of those games very enjoyable - right up my alley, really - despite the occasional difficulties with controls. And I'm an old console guy, so playing at 30 fps is second nature to me, lol.

I just pray the combat is cleaner and crisper than the Mafia Remake. All the great assets just washed away by the most uninspired third person shooting your brain can imagine. No I don't want a circle reticule. Thanks for asking and go fuck yourself. Unless you're going full im sim, just give me a dot reticule and have the first shot always fucking land on it. Make shooting deadly again. Mafia Remake gave us the worst of both worlds. Lame shooting and lame alternatives to shooting. They weren't bad, just completely bland and uninspired.

Awesome! It's difficult to generate excitement after GTA 6 but they delivered. This looks like a proper current gen game, with a surprisingly good price which suggests it will be a smaller game and thank God for that. Going by the other Mafias it will be an awesome movie-like game, I loved them all so I'm sure I will enjoy this too. And the release is also so close, great, can't wait!

Awesome trailer. I don't mind at all if they're switching from open world to linear, and I suspect it's similar to Uncharted 4 where it's "wide linear", with big, open-ended environments without being truly open world.

The open world was always the set dressing for the story in Mafia anyway, it was never do as you please like in GTA. I won't miss it. This looks insanely high quality for what it is (and the price), almost like The Last of Us tier combat.

This is a disasterclass in messaging by the way, especially if it actually is an open world setting.

This.

Cause what they are saying, literally sounds like a open world exist as they keep comparing it to Mafia 1 and 2 and their comments about the world and story being linear sounds like they mean the structure of the story is linear

So if this game happens to sell less unit, they have themselves to blame for this stupid messaging.

Just fucking say its like Mafia 1 and 2, in a open world, linear story, move on.

We have comments prior to this stating you can explore the world like in the other Mafia games...

No, there isn't. And it doesn't matter how the trailer named. It's all scripted scenes - there are no UI and usual camera/player movements.

Hm! I find it odd that you don't see it. Oh well, you're free to think that. I can clearly see multiple bits of active gameplay.

It'll sell like gangbusters..

- Good game
- Great graphics
- First player story
- No DEI
- Well priced

Very clear formula here, as proven by Astrobot and CO33.

Fair enough. That clarifies it. Weird wording on their FAQ, then.

I'm concerned that this game will struggle for sales. Although it's priced at $50, which is good, it is also quite short - and not Expedition 33 short, either, but more like 10 hours. Will people pay $50 for a 10-hour experience? Also, it's 4th in a series, with the most recent entry generally considered a disappointment. Will people give the series another chance, or are they tired of it?

You mentioned Astrobot and Expedition 33, but both of those games were technically polished and highly praised by critics. Reviewers can be fickle about technical issues, and the Mafia series isn't exactly known for being technically perfect. Nor will it carry the Sony impimatur like Astrobot. Mafia Definitive Edition had a Metacritic average of 78, so I doubt we're looking at another E33-type or Astrobot top-of-the-charts success story, in terms of critical reception or word of mouth.

I hope I'm wrong. I'm rooting for the game. But I can see it struggling.

So it does or does not have a open world?

I'm not talking about a sandbox.

Mafia 1 has an open world. Mafia 2 has an open world. Both have lineair stories but allow the player to explore the world.

Mafia 3 is a sandbox game (never bothered with it)

Its an open world like Mafia 1.
If they tell you go meet Vincezo, theres no time limit for you to get there, so you can just drive/horse around seeing the city tell you get bored and finally go meet Vincenzo.
You are in a mission to go meet vincenzo and kinda in an open world because you can go explore before actually meeting Vincenzo.

P.S This is exactly how Mafia 1 was structured and I purposely used the name Vincenzo, Mafia 1.
Mafia 1 also had a free roam mode where you would just be in the city with no real objective.
Its unconfirmed whether this has that mode or not.

Agreed, thats what makes this whole thing so odd. They seem to be confirming its like Mafia 1 and 2 where you can explore the world, yet saying "No" to open world, yet saying "narrative driven" as if they are just talking about the story

In that FAQ they should have clarified that its like the Mafia they know and love from 1 and 2, and less like 3 etc Cause some people are under the impression, it has zero open world, like its like Uncharted or The Last Of Us or other linear 3rd person titles and I think this might end up hurting them more then they realize.

Coming off of the hype of the GTAVI trailer, crime fans want a bit of that freedom of what they know from Mafia and I think they should clarify this and make it know it has a open world they can travel in or else many will run with this assumption its like Uncharted and may skip it based on this.

I get they want to talk about the story being linear, but they need to be very careful with how they are saying that regarding the actual physical open world, as many are thinking this isn't like Mafia 1 and 2, as in ZERO OPEN WORLD etc based on what they are saying with this linear thing.

Linear? Wasn't Mafia supposed to be open world? And they're charging Claire Obscura levels of money instead of $70? Some red flags for sure.

Hold the fuck up. Guy fires a double-barreled shotgun 3 times in a row in the gameplay trailer. How does no one catch this? 1:00 in.

that dude's arm is broken and he just doesn't know it.

The 3rd shot is the DLC special, you need the special edition to get that lol

Anyone else quite worried / skeptical about this? A new game from a popular franchise is being offered for a good price from a truly rotten greedy disgusting company and quotes about the game not taking all your time to play etc makes it seem like something bad is happening.

Again, its 2k, so my fuck off meter is near max, but will this game be a short 4-5 hour game or something? (I don't go with price = hours btw)

Even if it turns out to just be a great game at a good price, which I really want it to be as I really enjoy the series, I still ain't trusting 2k.

Tinfoil hat time though, wonder if this is a way to ease the blow of a £100 GTA6 seeing as both Rockstar and 2k are owned by Take-Two?

So it's a TPS action game, something like Uncharted or maybe Max Payne?
It's quite a bold strategy but I'm ok with this, I think I'll give it a try

And that's helped by the reasonable price, good strategy T2
