Nothing will come of this. Russia has already pretty much gone "go ahead and hit us with your puny sanctions", and I'm sure their oligarchs have underhanded deals in place to protect their wealth.

And I seriously doubt anyone is going to send troops, even Nato.

So Obama says our military will be used for nothing else besides "meeting our alliance obligations"... so if NATO decides to go to war, the US will come along with it?

Obama knows NATO aren't going to go to war over this, so he can get away with saying that.

"how much blame are you putting on putin? "

'We don't have all the facts...

... But it couldn't have happened without his support. '

Nice and non commital. Better than red line in the sand empty threats.

So... what happens when separatists impede an investigation? That's what we're looking at now. Putin is seriously myopic if he still has their backs if that happens.

If the EU did not have such deep gas ties with Russia, we would already be in the beginning of world war III

Yes, the Western World would obviously want to get into a war with the only other country that could destroy us all...

We may help militarily with suppressing the pro-Russian rebels now, but we will have no part in a direct war with Russia.

No it wouldn't. People need to quit it with the hyperbole.

You can pretty much guaruntee there would be NATO forces vs Separatists inside Ukraine if it were not for the deep economic ties between EU and Russia. The only reason the British did not come out so strongly as they did along with some other EU nations is because the global economy is so intertwined with each other and that includes Russia

It's an illusion to think that anyone will start a war against Russia.

What are you talking about? NATO is not the world police and Ukraine is not a member of this organization. We have the UN for things like that and no warmonger organization.

They wouldn't go to war unless Russia actually invades them. The most they would do is more sanctions and other forms of punishment against their economy.

No your statements are so removed from reality it's mind boggling.

I don't understand people who talk about WWIII. The existence of nuclear weapon alone should prevent anyone to believe it.

I think we should start a thread on that sometime, because while I think anyone who thinks WWIII will start over this is completely wrong, I don't buy into the notion that there will never be a WWIII simply because of the existence of nuclear weapons. I think it's a bad argument.

But that's not for this thread.

The USSR shot down a commercial plane in 1983 with fighter jets and nothing happened, with a US senator on board, during the Reagan presidency. Nothing happened then, I seriously doubt we will go to war, even if Russia said they did it. Obama is much more calculated then Reagan.

It's a nonsensical argument, imo. But not this thread :p

Ah, Fred Thompson on Fox News saying that the president doesn't know what to do against Russia, and another commentator saying that the president is a cautious person by nature, implying that he's afraid of Putin.

Never change Fox News, never change.

You know what I hate? Fucking these dumb mother fuckers (a girl I met years ago but haven't talked to since about 2011... time to unfriend this nonsense):

They added the caption "We lose planes, not games" to the pictures.

Decided not to embed, but it's basically a costume some soon-to-be ex-FB friends made for "beer Olympics" that they have once a year; each team picks a country to represent and I guess they chose Malaysia. The party occurred about two weeks ago, so before the recent MH17 flight... but obviously after the MH370 disappearance from March. I guess there's no major point in sharing this, it just pissed me the fuck off and I guess exposing their idiocy some how makes me feel a tiny bit better.

EDIT: I should send this shit to the local news or Buzzfeed with their names and have it go viral, but maybe that's going too far.

Obama can't do too much as long as Merkel is sitting on her ass. Because any sanctions without the commitment of Germany are very weak.

The other option is military support/intervention in Ukraine and that won't happen as no one really wants that.

I wonder what the USA's response would be if 300 Americans were on the plane. Since it's only 1 American...Obama can twiddle his thumbs. I'm not for war...I'm just wondering what the response would have been. I agree with others...nothing will come of this. Rebel fighters might stop shooting down planes for awhile but they'll be back to it within a year if they're still fighting Ukraine.

It's mind boggling that people are still acting as if sanctions against Russia would hurt Europe more than it would hurt Russia.
Have you guys actually read up on the subject?
If that happened, it would most likely lead to changes in legislation in both Europe and the US to alleviate the problems, obviously not fully, but partly. Russia would have a way harder time if they for example lost access to large parts of the capital markets.

I'd say the reason it hasn't happened yet is because it's not gonna be free, rather than the lack of efficacy against Russia.
Can't say that solutions like more fracking would be very popular either.

Ive been watching CNN, MSNBC, BBC and Fox News since this went down and the only one I've noticed that really even says anything about Obama, let along slams him non-stop is Fox. Saying he's scared, or weak, or how our waning influence is because of him, etc. Seriously, every single pundit, and every commentator they bring on throws a slam his way. Fox is hard to watch, because it's so obvious they are pushing an agenda, in every single show. I mean, every channel is biased, but Fox is by far the most obvious.

But we knew this.

You might be happier if you don't worry so much about what other people are doing. There are idiots all around us, try not to get hung up on it - unfriend and move on.

I'm really concerned that this is going to be the start a Russian/US war :(

The Soviet Union shot down a civilian airplane that had a US congressman among the passengers, and that didn't lead to war at the height of the Cold War.

You can relax.

Why are we so afraid to respond militarily? The safety of Americans has been compromised by a foreign military.

This is a perfect excuse to ally with Ukraine and protect it's border.

Two Dutch F16s just scrambled for an intercept. Probably totally unrelated, but if it's Russian Bears again I hope they shoot them out of the sky.

I don't actually, but if it's Russian planes the timing is pretty bad.

And Russia does flyovers all the time. They love doing it.

That would be a massive mistake,
Russia would then step in as Russia borders the Ukraine. And stuff will hit the fan

Because everyone is powder-burned from Iraq and Afghanistan and the U.S. population just isn't going to support a war unless we are overtly attacked on our soil.

Besides, there is no need right now. Further, eff the EU, they need to step up and handle their own backyard.

Dude, seriously, no. That would be bad and stupid. What they could do, and not cause a huge international incident, would be to get a missile lock on the Tu-95, and keep it long enough to scare the crew shitless.

Read up on article 5 of Nato.

If Russia goes into a Nato country, it will be treated as an attack on New York or Florida.
