Actually liked the chapter quite a lot. Was disappointed to see that this was "That Jutsu" but Kaguya's reactions was hilarious. I'm surprised Sasuke agreed to it and he still had this worried look on his face. Kishi's environments can be so nice when he really wants them to be. That snow temple/castle looked so neat.
I couldn't find a light novel topic so I figured I should just ask this here. I hope that's alright.
Has anybody read the Book Girl light novel series? I'm interested in collecting it but the import cost is rather high so I hesitate a bit. Could anybody kindly give a general impression?
I tried reading the comic version of Book Girl and the Suicidal Mime and I did find the twist wonderful, the theme well-delivered and the paralel with Osamu Dazai's work very interesting (I assume/hope other books would have other works/authors as basis). However I also feel that the mystery layering is a bit contrived and the character motivations a bit unclear (also, weird fanservice sequence in the middle). Basically, not lacking in feels but a bit disappointing in logic.
Perhaps this is simply because the manga doesn't have enough time to build the plot and characters up. I imagine this kind of a novel would use pages of descriptions and musings and thus deliver these point better. So in short, I'm curious how the novel version is compared to it, and how the other novels stack up against it (and how's the quality of the English translation, if that's the one you read).
Well then. As far as pacing is concerned, the manga actually covers the Light Novel fairly religiously in terms of progression. You're right that there's more musing and internal dialogue that's lost but not as much as you'd expect. A good portion of the text in the LN is in descriptions so the manga gets some leeway here.
As for character motivations being unclear, I'm a little confused ... who's? If you mean (Book 1 / Suicidal Mime Manga spoilers)
Chia's motivation for everything, all the "unknown" narrator text is hers. The manga doesn't go back through it like the LN does where it pieces together all the unknown narration again to spell it out. The background story for Tohko and Konoha is fairly light in here and is expanded on bit by bit per book. Edit: The layered mystery thing is reused a lot, though; past/present connections, present/book connections, etc. etc. are part of the reoccurring themes so that'll be seen a lot. I liked them but I didn't treat the books too much as a real mystery and just went more along the lines of reading suspense stories rather than a mystery
. That said, I wouldn't expect any super deep mysteries, though. Most are fairly simple and the rationale of the character's sometimes just has to be accepted (as they tend to in tragedies; bad choices leading to bad results).
The book / author relation is used in every story to varying degrees. I think Book 1's stands out simply due to how Osamu Dazai's life was (well, the parts anyone cares about). Some of the later books used are woven into the stories better in my opinion. No Longer Human's involvement is more just to explain the dark tone rather than more integral to all of the plot.
Personally, I think the manga is a pretty good adaptation. It's a quick read but it gets most the main points across and it lets the visuals do some of the minor details really well. Some things get a far greater impact due to this. So if you liked what you saw in the manga, the books will deliver the same sorts of stories. Light mysteries using other works as a basis for their plots. Expect a lot of tragedies and bittersweet.
As far as importing cost and all that, they do have Kindle versions if that's an option. The English translation is good considering the amount of Japanese works used (aka, a lot of poems translated, there's a code involving kanji, etc.).
I wouldn't bother. At least two of the impressions were just gibberish :x I can answer any other questions directly though. Well, in the morning probably since I'm tired but still.
OK guys. Since no one is volunteering to clean shitty Q scans for me, I'll have to make do with chinese scans. Which means that this will be a purely educational project and will not be showcased on any of the scanlation sites.
Damn! Sabo is crazy tough.
Maybe Issho shouldn't be using meteors while the Birdcage is active...
I was wondering where the Funk Brothers were, good to see they're helping out too.
That panel with Luffy & Law after the two assassins are knocked off. Oda's been loving that expression lately.
And of course... it's a trap.
Now that was unexpected...Water, a dead-end and Don Flamingo. How the hell is this going to go down?! I am pretty impressed with DF as an antagonist though, he seems to have more foresight at least than previous antagonists.
Mannnnnnnnnn..................... Toriko's Gourmet World CRUSHES One Piece's New World easily in term of difficulties and scale. One Piece make a big deal of a guy who can summon a few meteors out of the sky but in Toriko we have perpetual meteor rains, my God............
And that monstrous horse, so epic.................................
Only Hunter X Hunter's Dark Continent gonna be contender now, we'll see, but damn. Toriko's Gourmet World >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> One Piece's New World.

Eh, One Piece world has so many players than Torikos. I would also say that creativity and narratives strengths are much more refined. We have barely seen anything of the NW yet. I will say that I think DF has been a better villain than anybody in toriko by a wide margin.

I don't think HxH going to come near Toriko at least in term of scale , things in Toriko were always huge .
Dark Continent should be great if it has the advantage of not having much humans being there like the Gourmet World .
People still live in the NW and it going have few crazy islands but NW was hype because of the people that there more than anything else.
NW is where all the big boys are for HxH and Toriko is more going for the unknown .

I feel like One Piece's New World *so far* has been same old same old with the Old World, barely any difference. The battles, the scenarios, the everything, the way things unfold, they feel largely the same. It just simply doesn't have enough strength and mystery for me as Toriko's Gourmet World does; the sense of the unknown and adventure of the Gourmet World simply crushes One Piece's New World, at least for now.

Well, as I said before, Gourmet World really intrigued me in the way that One Piece's New World, so far, has spectacularly failed. There is really that sense of adventure in the Gourmet World, of seeing wondrous things, epic things, a world of the unknown, that One Piece's New World so far for me has failed to provide.
I am excited about HxH's Dark Continent; that Calamity things are really eerie in a good way. While it may not rival Gourmet World in terms of scale, I have a strong feeling that it will rival if not flat out defeat it in terms of mystery of the unknown and sense of adventure.
