super late reply but I wouldn't consider what he's doing trying to "redeem himself." He's just running away from his problems by telling everyone to screw off and convincing himself that he's okay. I would argue that he's regressed from the beginning of the manga, going from totally dedicating himself to helping Nishimaya to not even being able to admit that he actually bullied her when he confronted Kawai. His actions were extremely selfish and blinded him to the fact that Nishimaya was definitely not okay after his outburst.

I don't actually hate him, it's the same reaction I got to the main dude to Welcome to the NHK and all of his terrible decisions. You understand where it's coming from but it's still frustrating to watch/read.
