I'm guessing HxH is taking a week off because not enough time passed for a 40 chapter streak. The manga actually came at the ~35 month mark so I'm assuming there will be another couple of weeks off before the next real hiatus. Hopefully to stretch the streak to 40 chapters rather than 40 weeks/35 chapters because then I'd lose the bet.

HxH
Gon going back to a regular life...I look forward to him getting back in the game. Just not sure when that will actually happen. That prince is just too much.
Does anyone else read Wednesday Shounen in a particular order other than release time? I usually go in the following order to prevent complete despair.
Well then. As far as pacing is concerned, the manga actually covers the Light Novel fairly religiously in terms of progression. You're right that there's more musing and internal dialogue that's lost but not as much as you'd expect. A good portion of the text in the LN is in descriptions so the manga gets some leeway here.
As for character motivations being unclear, I'm a little confused ... who's? If you mean (Book 1 / Suicidal Mime Manga spoilers)
Chia's motivation for everything, all the "unknown" narrator text is hers. The manga doesn't go back through it like the LN does where it pieces together all the unknown narration again to spell it out. The background story for Tohko and Konoha is fairly light in here and is expanded on bit by bit per book. Edit: The layered mystery thing is reused a lot, though; past/present connections, present/book connections, etc. etc. are part of the reoccurring themes so that'll be seen a lot. I liked them but I didn't treat the books too much as a real mystery and just went more along the lines of reading suspense stories rather than a mystery
. That said, I wouldn't expect any super deep mysteries, though. Most are fairly simple and the rationale of the character's sometimes just has to be accepted (as they tend to in tragedies; bad choices leading to bad results).
The book / author relation is used in every story to varying degrees. I think Book 1's stands out simply due to how Osamu Dazai's life was (well, the parts anyone cares about). Some of the later books used are woven into the stories better in my opinion. No Longer Human's involvement is more just to explain the dark tone rather than more integral to all of the plot.
Personally, I think the manga is a pretty good adaptation. It's a quick read but it gets most the main points across and it lets the visuals do some of the minor details really well. Some things get a far greater impact due to this. So if you liked what you saw in the manga, the books will deliver the same sorts of stories. Light mysteries using other works as a basis for their plots. Expect a lot of tragedies and bittersweet.
As far as importing cost and all that, they do have Kindle versions if that's an option. The English translation is good considering the amount of Japanese works used (aka, a lot of poems translated, there's a code involving kanji, etc.).
The Kindle version is not available in my region, apparently. Shame.
Regarding characters...
Chia is great and I automatically assume Tohko's backstory is left for subsequent books (though the whole book-eating thing suddenly came without explanation that it strained my disbelief a little bit). I meant the four friends from the past. They just appear in the middle and I feel that we're not given enough space to extrapolate their roles and motivations before everything is uncovered in a long exposition near the end.
I like the layered mystery, but I just feel that the path the plot takes to unfold it is a bit unnatural. For example, the whole
"You look like him so I arrange a meeting between you and his friends to see what'd happen" feels forced.
This is mostly a matter of expectation, though, as I came in anticipating a heavier focus on puzzle-solving. I am fine if it instead uses mystery and bizarreness more as a vessel for contemplation.
In any case, thank you for the impression, I just have some random questions left:
1. Does this end in tragedy? I'm not one for spoilers, but I need to prepare if this is the case because that could potentially bum me out for days.
2. Would Chia appear again in any capacity?
That was the best thing to happen in Naruto for hundreds of chapters.
Bleach 586
Hey look the old gang is back together BUT WHERE IS GRIMMJOW KUBO???
One Piece 751
Fujitora is a cool guy. Seems like Sabo is insanely strong, but I guess that's to be expected of Dragon's second in command (I thought that was Ivankov), but that makes me wonder how strong Dragon really is. And I doubt that's the real Doflamingo.
Hunter x Hunter 345
Wow, looks like I got baited into Gon's Nen thing. And I like how Beyond's Group is already starting to hate Ging. This Prince guy seems completely well adjusted and right in the head, I'm sure nothing will go wrong.
Would be ok with me if Gon sat this one out and we got Leorio/Kurapika/Ging instead. Wonder if Leorio and Kurapika are going to adapt the shape of their zodiac signs. I can see Leorio going with a boar costume, or maybe taking over the Lion sign and having Lion become a boar or rat.
Only thing that I didn't like is the ridiculous amount of resources Ging has on hand. I am ok with the Hunters being super rich, but they should not be able to outbid the head of a country. That stole a little drama to the proceedings.
with ging being one of the most recognized and popular hunter. im not surprised that he has a fuckton more resources than a country. Maybe he also gets supports from others

Not really given the amount of resources they seem to amass, iirc Gon had mad bank at one point and he's just a small fry.
Also given how Ging acts he seems more like a hobo that doesn't really care about funds other from maybe basic sustenance/helping out with Home so i could see him having a fuck ton of money laying around.

oh man, that part will be great. Esdese will cut her in half. More than just in half. So many places. It will be beautiful. I could not be more excited to see Rein murdered brutally.
Akame ga KILL! 48-49
Thankfully the majority of Wild Hunt is dead and that arc is pretty much over.

yeah, they just sort of show up. Since like ~30% of the LN is on introductions, the "mystery" comes up kind of suddenly and it goes through it a bit faster so some of those characters don't get involved with the story. Most of the other books will introduce the people relevant to the story at the start
.
This is mostly a matter of expectation, though, as I came in anticipating a heavier focus on puzzle-solving. I am fine if it instead uses mystery and bizarreness more as a vessel for contemplation.
There's some puzzle-solving sort but, yeah, this is the better way to approach the mysteries. Try to follow them and solve them yourself but it's not going to be in the vein of a whodunnit sort of thing. Just a curiosity for the reader to keep the pages moving.

A lot of the individual stories will be tragic. I'd expect more bittersweet out of the resolutions throughout. So kind of like how Book 1 has the tragedy background story but a not-so tragic ending. Ultimately, it's a bittersweet series rather than a full-on tragic one.
