Marathon will be a premium, paid - but not 'full price' - Extraction Shooter with 3 maps at launch

Where did all these bitchy kids come from that are on Gaf nowadays??? @mods
Not every multiplayer game needs to be free just because it has a battle pass included .
Sony also has a large group of players that love to play more then just single player games.

Im looking forward to the game . Gaf is dying . Yall bitch at every multiplayer game .

Jesus Christ. Remember when you had games like UT and Quake 2 and UT 2K4 that had like 50+ maps and 5 different game modes? Hell, even the original Unreal ('98) had a multiplayer with different game modes.

This is just atrocious. And spoiling the name of Marathon too. Just...ugh.

From Zuzu's post in the other thread.

Sounds like the 3 maps are small. Luke talks about maps at this point of his video.

yup, and the map they have shown during the stream looked also relatively simple in terms of design.
I said this in another thread, but this game looks almost too streamlined and too simple.
it runs the risk of feeling really stale after only a week or so. the map design doesn't look like it's made for an extraction shooter, and more like it's made for a PvP game like a battle royale.

but not only the map design is like that, everything else they have talked about and shown looks super simplified compared to something like Tarkov. and if it's oversimplified they'll have a problem

The pricing could break this imo.

We live in an era where F2P is the norm, it's very hard to convince people to buy into your game when they can just download Marvel Rivals or Apex Legends and figure out if they like them or not without paying a cent.

lmao at calling your own game a "premium title".

Reminds me of when the callisto protocol started talking about "AAAA" games, which in the end didn't turn to be that good.

Premium meaning "it will cost money to play" not premium as in "damn this shit is so goddamn premium compared to everything else."

It'll never be a concord failure.

however, this is never gonna reach Destiny numbers.

The sad thing for me is that back in like the 2010s this would have just been the side multiplayer to a massive awesome SP campaign.

Whats the point of all this world design and lore etc when the gameloop is just find item and leave with item , take item in and find new item.

It reminds me of how CoD DMZ was fun for a whole week then it just became a shitty second job, "Loot 10 crates in this area"... wow thrilling quest design.

I like Bungie and I'd be very interested if there was no Battlepass. I don't mind paying but I'm done with games that are cluttered with battle-pass menus everywhere. The kind of games where my eyes are just glazing over the menus to find the "Play" button. I'm so tired of ads in games. I just won't do it.

Oh okay. I think they should've chosen a different word, thought it was the later for sure.

Sony keeps wasting time and money with this live action bullshit. Its no wonder you see such few franchise games on the PS5, they are wasting time with this bullshit. Another concord flop

Dead on arrival at that price.

Why is every company determined to only make games for Monster drinking ADHD headshot twitch nerds?

So lame.

Strikes me as incredibly out of touch. I really hope they stick to their guns and release it at $70, it flops, it goes ftp, and then it flops again. The best thing about gaming in 2025 isn't playing games, it's watching these dog shit games crash :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Premium title means its a paid game, cuz free games also known as F2P are Freemium. Its a monetization model. An indy game that costs 5 bucks in the google store is a premium title.

First time I heard about it.

This isn't directed at you HeisenbergFX4 HeisenbergFX4 , only the absent Tom Henderson.

Tom Henderson doesn't work in gaming.

He wouldn't be able to give you the reasons why Bungie is waiting to announce price. I'm sure Bungie leadership could give a few reasons why they're doing it.

Games media works in games media because they're not intelligent enough to work in games.
Yet he is not wrong in anything he said, almost like he has the pulse of the majority of gamers vs those super smart scientists at Bungie

Take out the in-game ads thing as that's for mobile games only, and this basically explains it.

I don't know if it's been said already but the grand daddies and OGs of the genre are all paid experiences.

not sure why people are insisting it should be F2P, Tarkov, Hunt:Showdown, The division 1+2, Sea of theives are all paid experiences.

And many newcomers are paid too like gray zone, marauders, that forever winter game.

Well where did you think the term "freemium" came from?
From the ass of some marketer. I've never refered to anything as freemium or premium, those words mean nothing and are there just to make products seem more enticing than they are. A game is either F2P or not, anything else is marketing noise.

"Marathon will be an extraction shooter"

Because of course it will.
sigh

And this is why videogames suck now - letting them be investor-driven means that devs will chase whatever fad seems to be getting money at the moment, until the bubble pops.

Yeah, you're probably right. I think regardless of what they say it will put people off, including myself. But I can see them doing something like this, which is highly probable:

Base Game - $40
- Just includes the base game

Enhanced Edition - $50
- Base Game
- Starter Pack (loot and stuff)
- Battle Pass

Premium Edition - $70
- Base Game
- Starter Pack
- Battle Pass
- 1 new runner (character class)

Yeah, this is what I'm leaning on which is probably why they won't say anything.

Sure the base game might be cheap... but realistically, people will usually buy the starter pack or the best edition available for extraction shooters/PvP games.

So in this case, to get the best start in gear and not be at a disadvantage, people will feel like they have to spend $70.

Since we are talking about Bungie funnily enough the lead of Vault of Glass / Taken King was a writer for Kotaku and 1UP before then.
