Marathon will be a premium, paid - but not 'full price' - Extraction Shooter with 3 maps at launch

This will be a spectacular failure. The genre doesn't even really matter. Extraction, Battle Royale, Arena etc. they are all just different contrasts of brown in the same shit with decisions like this.

It's launching with Borderlands 4. It likely launches right next to GTA VI and GTA:O will have so many game modes that will draw players in. You may have Battlefield 2025 releasing as well.

Next you have the recent market trends with everything consolidating more and more into Fornite. You also know that more players are looking for better PvE experiences than PvP. You only have to look back a year to see what people's expectations are in terms of which games are free to play.

The art style is actually sleek, minimal and I like it for design language in an FPS. But the whole thing is derivative of Apex. Even when shouting they were knocked. This is a game they hope streamers will play and influence people to buy, rather than people wanting to buy it based on the reveal.

How stupid you have to be to create a game on limited platforms, charge a box price and compete for gamers time with games which are virtually available on every platform for free.

My son playes fortnite with his friends and classmates where one guy logs-in from switch, another pc and another from xbox, yeah.. complete with that.

This will be bungie's swan song.

I never expected it to be F2P and if it was there would be some around here claiming it is DOA because it is not good enough to pay a premium. I expected it to be low cost (no more than $40) and have lots and lots of other things to spend money on. My hope is they add more maps for free.

The game is available everywhere...

This gameplay, these visuals, the monetization system....the holy triumvirate of "absolute garbage".

Since we are talking about Bungie funnily enough the lead of Vault of Glass / Taken King was a writer for Kotaku and 1UP before then.

Writing doesn't fundamentally change whether you're working for Kotaku or Bungie.

Tom Henderson has no idea why they didn't announce price. He couldn't produce a list of pros and cons. He just felt the emotion of slight frustration and said "They should listen to my feels". He doesn't work in a field that informs him of pricing strategy.

it's not exclusive. it's not announced for Switch 2 yet (and obviously won't work on Switch 1), but for every other platform.

Yes, they could've, but didn't.

It wasn't the point of event, it was a gameplay reveal.

Ok then don't be bothered by more knee jerk reactions when folks are only given vague information 🤷‍♂️

They're calling it a premium game but not revealing the pricing model until some nebulous time in the summer and people are going to be knee jerky about it.

It is what it is.

What the actual fuck? They've spent god knows how many years and hundreds of millions of dollars and made 3 maps??!!? 🤣😵‍💫

Its everything wrong with today gaming in a nutshell;

-Work force of 300
-likely an astronomical budget to match
-Takes years to finalize
-won't be feature complete at launch
-MTX
-Online only

Don't you just love it? Remember when you bought Halo 3, you got a great campaign for both solo and co-op, and a fun PvP with about a dozen of maps. 3 years after Halo 2, because it was pushed back. Epic did the same with a certain trilogy. We ate well on PS360 really.

His logic is sound though. Drop it now to let it sink in hear the feedback now. Only saying it's not going to be $70 (for the base game) is typical Bungie communication though. Murky at best, having gone through that the last ten years with Destiny, it's pretty much easy to see where they are going. ~$40-50 base game then you buy seasons or season pass. But wait there is more, extra map packs or events outside of the seasons. Then let's not forget the metric shit ton of skins for players, guns, and other shit we haven't even heard about they will try to sell.

Also makes it very brain dead on their part because they had to know everyone would want to know a price even if you just say something like "with the base game starting at X amount"

They could have people talking about their game but instead people are wondering about pricing (and I for one am glad its not F2P personally)

Why? It's not going to stop them from trying to milk the fanbase?

This is not free ? lol . How long you guys will give it before it dies ? 1 month ? 3 ? 1 year ?

I don't see this flying . Not when there is no proper story mode. I am out

Eh, it's to be expected. People are whining about everything nowadays. Especially pricing (just look at Nintendo pricing recently).

But it seems so dumb to expect full details at a gameplay reveal.

Maybe they don't even have the pricing details worked out completely yet.

This so much, my son plays Roblox with his mates cause they all log on on different systems and play these stupid ass games for free and they all love em, there's no way this game succeeds based on how I see how my son and his mates plays games

What a fucking let down.
Destiny has overwhelming issues but it's still a fun shooter at it's core.

Ok clean slate Bungie. Show me somthing new with a better structure this time...

It wasn't just a gameplay reveal though, it was an information blow out, with alpha invites, release date and press previews. It's actual weird to omit the price of the game along with all this information.

Like I said, maybe they don't have the pricing nailed down yet.

Why is everyone assuming this will flop? Helldivers 2 is also not f2p and we all know how well it did and still does.

That game is the exception not the rule. Sony desperately tries to find more success stories like this one because games like these are easy to expand and milk with mtx. Concord recently flopped, it would regardless, but pricing it didn't help matters. You're up against a selection of F2P games.

His logic is sound though.
It's not. Bungie is likely collecting data on buzz / interest that will let them find a more effective price.

We don't matter. If anything, they probably want people online clamoring for a price because it keeps the game on the front of the publics mind.

The market isn't afraid of a price point. This game will live or die based on how fun it is, and how often it'll get friends to beg friends to play. This is made up drama.

Nothing new under the sun.

Is there a special edition controller I can buy 20 or 30 of on the Playstation website before they pull the plug?
Listen, all jokes aside, I hope they do one so I can get one with them glitchy, yellow effects on it

I personally love the art direction of it.

People thought it was a new Marathon. It's not even a 2 minute race...

One of the most soulless art designs I seen in the last 15 years of gaming. Concord characters design was crap because it tried to appeal to an audience that doesn't exists (or it's very niche), but this one, it's just mediocre.

Even single dev games show more talent than whatever this is....

"This Bungie" acquisition from Sony, for 3.6 billion dollars, is the worst scam in the entire gaming history.

You can't consider your game 'premium' and not have a price already determined. They're not willing to share it because the backlash to a multiplayer game having an upfront cost along with microtransactions, and seasonal battle passes will be bad.

You don't need to have your price already determined, you need an indication in comparison to other games in the same genre.

But as long as you don't have the final details on pricing, you don't give a price.

And maybe they want to wait for reactions to the upcoming alpha as well, before giving the go on sharing details for pricing.

That' just common sense.

How is that common sense? The game has been in development for years, its 5 months from release. This isn't an indie studio, this is Bungie and Sony developing a live service game with long term monetization, pricing should be locked-in. Delaying the reveal of the price isn't about buying more time to decide, its about optics. They know combining a box price, microtransactions, and battle passes is going to rub people the wrong way, especially when there's no campaign and it's PvP-focused. Trying to avoid a PR storm. Its not common sense, its calculated messaging.

They also have seen what happened to Concord.

I think it will manage to have a good base of player, extraction shooter are awesome and we are lacking of a really well made one.
