March 2013 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes April 15

Someone on twitter (Major Nelson maybe) will post the XBOX numbers any momentg now. Plus how much of a share of the console market theyt have and how many straight months they've been top dog.

I wonder if we'll get an official Nintendo PR this time and not just comments in IGN article this time, seeing how they've been very talkative in the past two days about numbers.

Depends on how strong 3DS unit sales were. More likely that we see increase YOY for 3DS and have something to talk about, but I think Wii U data could be more nebulous.

If 3DS somehow didn't beat YOY comps? That could mean that Reggie's recent comments are all we'll get.

If 3DS doesn't beat last year's performance, probably we'll get just the blurb from IGN with Luigi's Mansion 2 numbers and maybe Lego City Undercover too + all hardware combined sold, then, gah.

I don't think the numbers will favor Nintendo that much. No matter how exciting those Nintendo Directs are, I mean zomfg LttP2 (!!!!), it's kinda obvious that Nintendo is using them as damage controll. The weird thing is that if the WiiU does 100k+ it would be considered a postive surprise.

I had thought something similar. Fils-Aime's comments can be used for Nintendo PR this month if 3DS doesn't get past 200K and Wii U is in the ballpark that Mr. Pachter predicts.

Enough spin in Fils-Aime's comments to carry over positives, regardless of last month's reality. Guess we'll see over the course of the evening.

According to Reggie, Luigi's Mansion 2 sold 415k units (digital + retail). Other then that, I expect nothing but disappointment from this NPD. Especially on Nintendo's side of things.

The fact is that we don't know if he's referring to just March NPD sales or real LTD sales, so also first two weeks of April, not included in NPD this month.

#NPD for March shows Xbox 360 sold 261K units as #1 console and 6 of Top 10 titles. Thanks to all for the ongoing support.

e: beaten like a drum :(

That's true, but 415k sold either way is still a positive for that franchise (imo). Especially considering it has most likely already passed 1 million sold worldwide.

Hopefully someone will bring out the good old pole vault gif from the struggeling days of the PS3. NPD day has been one of my favorites for years now.

Eh, strange Greenberg didn't highlight this should be the 27th consecutive month of being at the top for 360.

Will we be getting Nintendo's Wii U numbers when the data is released? Or will it be like the last couple of months where the numbers are hidden until they eventually leak-out later on? I would love to see if Pachter's Wii U 55K estimation turns out to be accurate.

That's a 30% drop, quite big. Although it's in line with the drop it had last month (29%).

I'm afraid I've overestimated everything this month.

Doubtful. I suspect that leaks and extrapolations will be our keys for WiiU. But we will see.

For later...
MS PR said:
Xbox 360 continues to hold the number one spot in the U.S., selling more units in March than any other console; marking the 27th consecutive month as the best-selling console in the U.S.

March 2013 NPD highlights:
· Xbox 360 sold 261,000 units in March, maintaining the number-one console spot in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, March 2013)

· Total retail spend on the Xbox 360 platform in March reached $402 million, (hardware, software and accessories), the most for any console in the U.S. (Source: NPD Group, March 2013)

· During the month of March, Xbox 360 held six of the top 10 console game titles including: “Bioshock Infinite,” “NBA 2K13,” “Gears of War: Judgment,” “Tomb Raider,” “The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct” and “Call of Duty: Black Ops II.” (Source: NPD Group, March 2013)

Entertainment experiences on Xbox LIVE continue to grow as Xbox introduced its newest app this week, Flixster. The service, available for Xbox LIVE subscribers in the U.S., is one of the most popular apps for movies, allowing users to buy and rent thousands of titles, check out local theater show times and access movie scores from Rotten Tomatoes. And, Xbox Tournaments with Virgin Gaming launched earlier this month exclusively on Xbox LIVE, bringing gamers free-to-enter gaming tournaments for popular games including “EA SPORTS™ FIFA 13,” “NBA 2K13,” “EA SPORTS™ Madden NFL 13” and “EA SPORTS™ NHL® 13,” with many more titles to come.

Note (by jvm): It is my belief that the ranking of titles in their PRs is usually in decreasing unit sales. But I'm not positive.

I wonder if the order of those X360 single-SKU titles in the press release is telling us something.
Seems odd that NBA 2K13 would be positioned ahead of Gears of War: Judgment.

The fact they didn't mention "more than XX% of total consoles sold were 360" tells me the PS3 must be close behind.
I agree. Suspect it's close this month.

Well fuck, Walking Dead is in the top 10. Why?
People don't read reviews.
People like shooting zombies.
People saw the commercials.

I actually have The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct in my Top 10 multi-SKU prediction list this month (albeit at the bottom). Looks like it may have even done better than I expected.
