March 2015 NPD (U.S. Hardware) Predictions - Closes April 14th

It didn't

:(

BTW Bloodborne showing a bit of skin with those legs

Expected, sadly. I really enjoyed The Order for what it is, but do find it appropriate if Bloodborne makes a stronger sales impact. As much as a game can "deserve" success, or whatever, I think Bloodborne is the much better product even if I like both for entirely different reasons^^

In light of shit like this, why doesn't everyone just tell NPD to fuck right off? What is this air of secrecy and superiority? What are we in, the 1980s? (or the 1890s?)

It is the era of transparency. These companies, corporations, and PR firms that think they're pulling something over on the general public by being secretive about shit or by peeing on something and saying "this is mine, none of you are allowed to talk about it but me" is absurd and increasingly unacceptable.

I know GAFfers love their NPDs, but maybe if we (and the rest of the industry) told them to fuck off, then they wouldn't be hunting people down for such nonsense.

Sorry for going off topic, so back OT I'll say this:

[PS4] 10K
[XB1] 11K
[WIU] 1K

No, that prediction doesn't make any sense. That's representative of my feelings on the matter of a GAFfer having to perma-ban him/herself because of this nonsense.

Didn't a certain company tell NPD they didn't want their numbers public, and because of that NPD have to be restrictive?

That's how I remember it anyway.

I get the sentiment, but it is their proprietary information with which they use to earn their living.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

It really, really isn't the 'era of transparency'.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

It really, really isn't the 'era of transparency'.

It really is, or rather could be, because of the widespread penetration of the internet. Whether companies USE that availability to be truly transparent is a different story. So yeah I guess maybe I shoulda said it 'should be' the era of transparency.

The NPD group is massive.

It's not just Video game sales in the US the track, hell it's not even just the US. They cover a variety of industries and it's their right to sell that information if there is demand for it.

In the same way that Gartner, IDG etc... sell their findings.

Doesn't change my feelings on the matter. They're irrelevant. In today's digital age these companies they cover/track could just as easily send out a tweet saying "here's our cumulative sales for March" whether they be US, EU, worldwide, etc.

Having some huge group of folks tracking all this data and selling it, when it COULD be so readily available, is ridiculous to me. They aren't needed anymore except by the various industries that want to perpetuate their existence.

I get the sentiment, but it is their proprietary information with which they use to earn their living.

I realize it's their proprietary information, but WHY is all I'm saying. Why bother. We used to need these companies for numbers releases because, what, it was more cost effective maybe?. But with the internet, MS/Sony/Nintendo/[Insert literally any company that has access to a smartphone] could easily just have monthly releases of their sales numbers and be done with it. There really is no need for NPD anymore. They're becoming increasingly irrelevant. And they don't even include sales data for digital releases/digital sales! I mean jesus man what are they really good for anymore, and is it enough for people to lose their jobs over it? Not really IMHO.

At any rate, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to derail the thread at all with that. I considered posting a new thread but I like my GAF account so I try not to post every thread idea that pops into my melon. I won't take this one any further off topic. Sorry mods if I overstepped!

Besides that, we live in a worldwide economy. Focusing on JUST US sales is a little ridiculous anyway

Yeah, this result is sure to be a bloodbath.

The reason why NPD don't reveal top 10 software and hardware figures has nothing to do with money, after all they used to release these figures publicly not long ago.

Publishers don't pay NPD thousand of dollars just to get top 10 software sales and hardware numbers, they pay them to get a full report with whole database that contains thousands of sale figures, SKU splits, revenue figures, ASPs, peripherals and accessories data etc. Releasing this tiny bit of info (top 10 software + hardware) to public don't hurt them financially one bit.

The sole reason they don't release sale figures publicly anymore because the publishers themselves asked them to not do so.

Devs / Pubs in the modern era do not want hardly any numbers publicly given. Its why you see me post only trends and no hard data. I'm in no rush to get either the company I work for or the other members of this industry on my back.

It's really unfortunate as I wish we were as open as an industry as say Film is with what it earns but it's just not going to happen any time soon.

Agreed.

i will never understand for the life of me why the gaming industry has not embraced transparency. It's not as though transparency has hurt the film/music industry. Plus, movie/music fans argue about numbers as much as we do, if not more so. So that can't be the reason.

The releases part of the OP is really cool... the full OP deserves congrats ;)

I will predict this time only what matters lol

PS4: 410k
Xbone: 275k

Good lord, the X1 hasn't been in the top 20 all month.

[PS4] 475k
[XB1] 140k

The second bundle isn't even in the top 100 (March)

Yes, but since we don't know how close any of the numbers actually are, it could be holding the AC bundle (ranked 19th on the month) down a spot or two, slightly deflating its actual position for the X1 as a whole.

I don't think it's any secret that PS4 dominated this month, and bloodborne seems to have actually moved a few consoles on top of selling well.

140k in March would be terrible. That would mean a HUGE drop in weekly sales from February (a drop of 59%)!
Yeah, this as well. 140K in March would be even less than in January, which is extremely unlikely, even if the XB1 didn't have one of its best months.

I know it's just 7 days into the month but on amazon all the xbone bundles are in the -+50sish. Do all they sell is bundles?

edit: I've never done a predication so I guess I'll try now.

[3DS] 250K
[PS4] 455K
[WIU] 123K
[XB1] 269K
[VITA] 1 dollar, kay?

another edit: fine i'll change it. whats the prize for having the closest numbers?

Both bundles are likely much lower because the MCC bundle is eating into the Unity bundle's sales. The Unity bundle used to be stationed in the top 20.

Amazon has some vanilla XBOs for sale, as well as some 3rd parties selling Titanfall & COD bundles those are discontinued. As for the vanilla one, $340 isn't a very good deal for a vanilla.

thank god we have steam spy now.

Not sure about other retailers, but the XB1 has been in the high 30's to 50's for a few weeks now. I'm not sure what the reason is but I would love to find out. BTW, as your first prediction, I suggest you to lower your PS4 numbers. The PS4 doing above 500K is very unlikely.

Javin does offer some sound advice. While PS4 is doing very well, both worldwide and in the US, last year only saw three months over 400K; the two holiday months and September with the aid of Destiny. While I am in the camp that believes 400K+ is quite possible this month, adding another 150K to that would be a VERY tall order.

Edit: What the heck did TomShoe do to get banned?!?!

Yeah, I was wondering about what happened to TomShoe as well.

Anyway, back on topic, this year, the YoY sales of the PS4 should rise, so one more month or two may see sales above 400K. I'm personally expecting June to be huge for the PS4. We already know there will be a Batman Arkham Knight bundle in June, so sales should definitely be north of 400K. And September has MGSV. 'Nuff said. I'm predicting the PS4 to sell through 17.5 million this year, up from 14.5 million last year.

Exactly. I don't think we will see another "full on Destiny" kind of month before the holidays, but I would be very taken aback if we didn't see March, June, and September all north of 400K with September being Sony's flagship month again before Xbox1 takes October.

Edit: June, not July^^

Even then, #19 or #18 won't make a big difference.
The MCC bundle had nearly no "effect" at all.

Although Halo 5 is currently set to release at the end of October, I can see the PS4 potentially winning the month if Sony decides to drop the price to $299.

I wonder how long Sony will keep the price as it is and when the best time for them to drop is. I'm sure they are probably thinking October would be the best time to drop given that will be "XBone's month". But not if sales are under performing because you've sold to the majority willing to buy at full price. Which we've still got a good half a year before then and that's taking account XBone doesn't drop further. Of course there's some major releases to bump sales in that time. The two major ones being bookends for the slower Summer months. However, dropping in September along with MGS would be massive too. It's just whether Sony thinks it can ride the MGS hype for then and wait one month more to combat Halo and kick start a huge Xmas season.

Personally I think it'll drop around august. After the batman bundle releases, but still early enough to help out with a slower month.

I think Sony & MS are focusing on bundles instead of outright price cuts. Granted we have seen MS do a price cut they have also been offering up some good bundles.

The Batman bundle should do big for Sony

Also i would not be surprised if Sony push out a MGS V bundle as well.

Don't think Sony will bother with a price cut this year, they don't have nay competition outside of NA and UK so why bother? XB1 had some drastic cuts to beat PS4 in NA last year, don't think it's something Sony would lose sleep over when they are number 1 in every other region. Batman, MGS V and other bundles is what I see Sony doing to increase value this year, high profit margins would be nice and all.

I don't get why people think Sony won't do a price cut this year. In October, the PS4 will be out in the market for almost 23 months, which is the perfect time IMO. Not to mention the PS4 will sell tons of units during the holidays if it's priced at $349, let alone $299.

Don't see how anyone could say this without knowing the actual split between the two bundles. Rankings aren't going to show that.

That's not to say that I feel the MCC bundle greatly helped though -- if anything I think it simply split sales that would have all been AC Unity if the MCC bundle didn't exist.
