I used the Standard Kart + Tires to learn the courses better at first, as boring an answer as that may be

Coming from one whose last game was Mario Kart Wii, aye I'm having a lot of fun with it even without local multiplayer as of yet. Plenty of parts to unlock, enough differences between characters to mess around with to find what works (I still haven't), and the courses really are quite lovely.

Plus you have us, fellow GAFFERS to play online against.
