Good players can still seem to their stuff out in front at times, but the first item boxes can either be all coins or outright crazy with triples for example. Triple nanas in first is the greatest. It's just enough to mix things up.

You can still notice the difference. Bullet bills in 3rd, super 8 in 2nd, 3 bananas and 3 greens in first, etc.

Did you check around for compatibility info first? The original Wii was fussy too and you needed to do some poking to see if they worked.
