It isn't the only way, but it definitely is the best way. You can add others using your NNID and join them in public/private rooms, but it is harder to coordinate compared to tournaments.

On older Nintendo systems, there was a button combination that let you reset the neutral position of the analog stick if it got out of alignment. I was wondering if there might be one here, too.

I fixed it by resetting the controller order in the home menu. But I didn't want to have to leave the lobby.
