Mario Kart 8 - Review thread

Andre from gXplain mentioned in BM that the gamepad is basically a must, because it displays the map, so you can find other drivers.

Does anyone know if this displays the position of the other drivers?

The position of each driver is shown. The left side of the GamePad screen will list the positions 1-12. The course map is the remainder of the screen.

Quick question...which controllers can I use for MK8?
Wii, Wiimote + nunchuck, Wii Classic Pro, Wii U Pro, GamePad. Everything, basically.

I think the new design of the tracks would make really difficult to properly race and see where you are going in a horizontal split.

Yeah i think nintendo decided the preference for us. But i would like to point out to F-zero GX once again it kind of have the same loopy track design with gravity defying corners and stuff there you also had the choice of going vertically or horizontally. Before each mp session. So they know how to do both way splitscreen. Always mess up my corners that way i need to see how much space i have to overtake and how to run out a corner and how to cut it. That is where i make most of my time in MK because i prefer the more accelerating kind of karts instead of speed. It is doable with vertical split screen bot more easy in horizontal. Yeah i know it comes down to preference but it was one easy thing to add and just heared this news so yeah i am a bit disapointed but that will go away once the game comes out.

(always wanted to use that gif :P)

So Wiimote/+nunchuck, Wii U Pro Controller, Gamepad.

I think it has more to do with scaling. If you look at uncharted or resident evil local mp you will get those crazy boxes so you have 1/3 of the screen filled with black. But if 2p is vertical how will they do 4p? 4 times vertical? I think that will look normal like 4 times small horizontal screen. why can't they give you the option like in f-zero gx for example. Nintendo knows how to do it. Guess they did a bit of rushing for this game.

2p vertical is almost square. 4p is the same as the single player. 2p horizontal would be a nightmare because you need the full vertical view for some gliding, underwater, antigravitational parts so that would mean a much wider (double) view than the single player. That's why they probably couldn't have cut the view as you normally do for the horizontal split.

Different resolution ratios. For 4:3 it is almost the same thing if you split vertically or horizontally.

This is the first game I've really looked forward to in a long time. The fact that I can get Pikmin 3 for free along with it is a really nice bonus.

The battle mode sounds bonked though.

Yeah i can agree with you why they see the need for doing the vertical split. Looks better for the average joe. All i am saying is that i would have liked the option to do horizontal i know i will do better in that option and yes i have seen it would make horizontal bigger seen it in f-zero gx yes so i know all about it you need to make big jumps there too even bigger and faster then in mario kart and still i prefer it horizontal.

edit: see you added a bit that is why i also was cool like the way they handled it in Resident evil and uncharted on ps3 with a small black bar on the sides to get the native resolution see

WHAAAT INDEED fucking 2p multiplayer already ruined.

This feels like a good thing really, especially because widescreen TVs have really not been kind to horizontal split screen at all. Though I see how the lack of the option may come as a bummer to those who still understandably game on CRTs.

Gt leaves me a bit baffled. Feels like a quick and dirty job to get this wii stuff done. They describe antigrav as purely cosmetic and even as a gimmick. No word about bumpboosting or even a single mktv footage. Quick and dirty GT. *avengersgif*

At this point I am hoping Nintendo pulled out the good Battle Mode Arenas, in hopes to make bank on DLC. A sadistic wish.

Anyone still actually playing on a 4:3 set? ;)

Seriously, vertical split on a 16:9 display gives you an almost square view of 8:9, versus a horizontal split view letterbox at 16:3. I think once you try it and see that the vertical nature of Kart 8 kinda needs it, you'll be happy.

I spend almost 2 hours reading reviews from pretty much all the websites on the OP... It's 4:30 am and I have to go to work in like 4 hours but man this was so worth it. My hype levels are through the roof! Sure it has some downsides on the Battle mode with the lack of Arenas and a weak character roster but everything else is just beyond top notch and I just cannot wait to play the hell out of this and I really REAAAAALLY hope this game sells well and more importantly, sells some Wii U consoles, damn it!

It definitely is not cosmetical, because oftentimes it offers alternative routes.

The news of what they did to Battle Mode is devastating.
Mario Kart 7's Battle Mode wasn't amazing (played it last month), but it was good enough.

Giving the courses as battle arenas is a truly terrible decision. I wonder how this happened. Sounds like the sort of thing that happens at the last minute due to a scheduling or technical problem.

It's annoying, not a must. No-one wants to take their eyes off the road to have to check positions etc. It feels completely forced so that Nintendo can show that they're using the gamepad for something, but all that info should be on the screen (or optionally on the screen). It's especially bad in multiplayer, where only the gamepad user has access to that information.

Yep.

I have no friends so no battle mode isnt a personal issue but when I used to go over to a mate's place and we'd play SNES Mario Kart battle mode and super bomberman ... those kinds of modes are just the best.

I feel sorry for people that dont get to have that experience on the new one.

Probably the only bad thing about this game from what Ive read so far.

A flat plain with some ramps and a few hiding places shouldn't be that hard to put together.

I understand that you wanted to have the option. Nintendo seems quite reluctant to greenlight "workarounds" that they are not happy with. To keep the native resolution in horizontal split-screen while keeping the vertical resolution (because of the reasons I already mentioned) it would have meant that the black bars should cover half of screen. The other solution would have been that when you glide you don't see where you can land and what's on the ground.

Fuck that.

Take one of the cube, speherical or irregular elongated shaped planetoids in Super Mario Galaxy and you are hidden by the curvature of the surface. Battle mode takes place in antigravity mode on the surface of them.

Hell, a toroidal planetoid with some internal tunnels as well as an outer shell would be awesome too.

ie battle mode on the surface of something like that

I can understand why they didn't want to support a horizontal split on two player.

single player 4:3 = 1.333
single player 16:9 = 1.777
horizontal split in 4:3 = 2.666
horizontal split in 16:9 = 3.555

3.555 is a pretty ridiculous aspect ratio to design around, especially when they're supporting 1.333 for off TV play.

You'd either have a /ridiculous/ field of view and a teeny car, or be able to see nothing above you, including blue shells.

Can they actually add dlc to this?

Considering it's heavily built around online functionality and Nintendo said the promotional campaign for this game would last throughout the entirety of the year, it seems kind of likely that we might see news for add-on content in the near future. Fingers crossed for something at E3.

I'm genuinly shocked that the second lowest score is from a Nintendo-centered website.

I'm also realizing people care more about Battle Mode than I thought. I barely play it.

Edit: What if they add Battle Arenas later as DLC? Will they change the score, I wonder.

*Looks at all those 60fps videos*

Yup, the next console generation officially starts May 30th.

I'm also surprised that more reviewers didn't ding the game for not having off-TV play in local multi. That's the thing that definitely disappoints me the most.

Not suprising since NWR only reviewed SP and Battle Mode in the review I've been reading, which all reviewers agree are the weaker part of the game.

Why they would review like that in the first place is beyond me though.

That looks good too. Why didn't Nintendo do it :(

Why did they only review SP?

Edit: Sounds like the review in the OP did review MP.

Looks like it´s going to be a lot of fun. The no in game chat doesn´t hurt me, always talk through skype/bumble anyway.

Can´t wait for May 30th!

Clicked on the link looking to laugh at the bitter old man, then found myself agreeing with him. While I don't ink battle mode is the most important part of mario kart, it is important to me. If they've knackered it that is very disappointing. And the blue shell still grates. I guess I just have to get past the fact that it really isn't about the racing anymore , it's a fighting game on wheels.

Will still have a ton of fun playing local multiplayer (does it allow splitscreen for up to four?)
Me too. It's nice to see other people pointing out that the blue shell doesn't even give the person who uses it an advantage. Terribly designed weapon.

I honestly didn't expect this to review so well, I'm impressed. And the game looks absolutely stunning, beautiful stuff.

Edit: Uh, MK8 doesn't feature dedicated battle mode maps? That's disappointing, I didn't know that :(

Unless you are playing 7 and everyone slows down when they see someone(you) have it and you go from last to first.

That's always funny.

I am playing f-zero gx on my sd tv now in split screen horizontal 16:9 looks fine you dont have as much room up and down but that does not matter because the camera will follow you and you can see enough in the distance and even better you can see the whole width of the track so you can still judge those jumps doing port town aero drive now. Man this game is awesome we need an new f-zero. Also the map in mario kart will give way and sounds that there is an item coming your way so no problem with those either. But this is the last of that i dont want to derail any further all i am saying it works fine and that i am disapointed but i have found my solution like i mentioned.
