Mario Kart World - Nintendo Direct announced for tomorrow (April 17, 6 AM PT/9 AM ET). It will be 15 minutes long.

You're right mate. Zelda and Pokemon are only niche franchises. And like I said; it's a celebration of Nintendo and their IP in general. It will push people to games they otherwise wouldn't have played.
I don't know what to say. If you think you know better than Nintendo on how to make one of the most successful game series of all time sell even more then give them a call.

Your asking for a completely different franchise.

I did. And I do. They don't care.

Somewhere in your brain there's probably an idea that's better than Nintendo's.

Don't sell yourself short.

I'm talking about general game design philosophy. Nintendo makes games with fun as the main factor. Sequels don't have to be bigger or whatever. Just more fun or at least more original and fun.

How does MK World look more childish than MK64? That was also the first 3D MK game. All games since have similar vibes.
Again, while you find Nintendo's fun design philosophy great, it's not the same fun design philosophy from another dev studio. Fun games are not solely created by Nintendo. Some people have fun playing car simulators, goat simulators, playing Sims or life simulator games that I would never consider fun. But other people do, and when devs design those games, they are thinking about how to make it more fun and adding features that are fun within the universe of the games. It would be pretentious to think only nintendo knows this secret sauce.

I don't disagree. Some developers also live by this. But there is NO developer in this planet that has that philosophy beter developed than Nintendo. They are doing this since day 1.

It's the secret sauce to all great media. Intent.

Only issue i can see is battlemode is back to the horrible Mario Kart 8 (none deluxe) version of taking place on regular tracks. Could be wrong but that's what the tiny glimpse of it said to me, and it's quite telling that they avoided mentioning it.

If it's got dedicated arenas then the game is essentially perfect.

I was hoping we would see a block fort battle stage but I say the chances are slim. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Fuck Pokémon, it there is faaaaaaaaaar better choice.

Xenoblade Kart would be sick. Image doing some sick drifts off of the Bionis' leg while being chased by a Territorial Rotbart jamming to some Mitsuda, Kiyota, Shimomura, ACE+ tunes.

I honestly don't see much new things that would pull in a newbie.

This is primarily for people who already like Mario Kart, the more you love the series the more you will like this imo.
Opposite for me cause I haven't been a big Nintendo fan since the SNES, N64, and Gamecube eras. And was never a Mario Kart fan but really like what I'm seeing for Mario Kart World. At the same time my best friend who was a big Nintendo friend all throughout his life actually being disappointed in Mario Kart World.

For me though it's not just Kart but never been a Metroid Prime but after seeing Metroid Prime 4, for some strange reason I also started looking into the Metroid lore and even emulated the 2D and Prime series to try and get into them. So the Switch 2 is the first Nintendo console I'm actually interested in since the Gamecube era and also the one that for some reason made me get interested in Kart and Metroid.
Absolutely. And it would sell even more if you could play as Pikachu and if you could drive on a Pokemon track.

Also, everything? I'm only talking about Mario Kart doing the Smash thing. Nobody gives a s F about most Mario characters except the more famous one.

Nintendo has much more valuable characters and IP than the damn Cow.
I definitely wouldn't mind Kart getting more characters like Zelda, Metroid, or even more Mario characters like those Bowser minion bosses and other uniques like Game Guy from Mario Party 3 etc. Never cared for Smash and still don't since I don't like fighting games so won't mind them putting them all in Kart.

The jumping and wall riding is really gonna make for some interesting routes and higher skill ceiling
That's definitely the most interesting change they've shown imo. Adding more alternative routes per track through verticality is a smart way to accommodate for all the new players.

I'm curious to see how they've re-designed the returning tracks around this.

The time trials/ghosts people create in this will be absolutely bonkers I imagine.

You know, it's Mario Kart. I'll find it fun, it'll be cool enough for me.

That being said, with everything going on with the price, the Switch 2, its price, etc. I really don't know if this is a "system seller" for me. I'm still unsure if I'm even going to rush and attempt to preorder a Switch 2 bundle with this game.

For me starting to reconsider my preorder, not the biggest Mario kart fan, it's ok to play a game now and again, to me this isn't the game I'd buy a system and play none stop for weeks or months, donkey Kong or a better flushed out single player game should have launched with the switch 2, plus people already complaining about the price of this game wait for six months and the paid dlc starts

I knew Mario Kart wasn't enough to buy it day one, but by the time I absolutely have to have it over some other games, there is a very good chance the deal will be even worse by then.

Ask PS5 launch buyers...

what I like about jumping and wall riding is you can jump any time to avoid attacks and you can wall ride any wall….there is "special" made wall.

This direct felt useless because we've already seen 90% of it during the treehouse footages.
I also didn't see anything justifying the 90 EUR price tag.

I would die for Cow.

That is all.

Was hoping for a much more compelling story campaign with RPG elements to justify that price

Sadly it's a pretty safe Mario kart game instead. Looks good but not as exciting as it should be, especially at that price tag

Doesn't garner the same level of excitement as BOTW at launch

No thank you, if I want RPG I will play proper RPG, I don't need RPG element in every fucking game.

Then don't charge people $90 for it then.

The price tag should indicate it's a massively compelling title that really elevates the series.

Instead, it's a Mario kart expansion. Looks good. Not a whole lot to do unless you're playing with other people

Was hoping for more. Some kind of single player mode, adventure mode or something , level up, get new car parts, ect.

Also they have a whole ass open world and no arenas anywhere? Seems like such an obvious addition for battle mode.

I don't understand

there is an adventure mode, it's called free roam.

To me game's worth is not about how long the game, it all about enjoyment.

And put LOT OF hours in MK8D and I'm not type of person who plays online.

So for me worth it.

open worlds missions

excited-farley-shake.gif
You mean collecting coins or racing against yourself from one point to another? Oh and they have secret coins too! And after I've exhausted all of those monotonous missions, I get to rail grind and aimlessly drive around for that perfect picture. Free roam looks rubbish.

People hoping for a Forza Horizon type experience were out of their minds.Mario Kart needs to be accessible to the tens of millions that will buy it. That means core kart gameplay and menu based mode selection was always going to be the focus. Not some complex single player open world experience. Which is somewhat disappointing, I had hoped they were going after a Diddy Kong Racing 2.0…

Nothing particularly exciting in the direct.
Also is it me or does the game just look kinda bland? I'm not talking graphics but just the washed out look and grey haze over everything.

Though I guess for big mario kart fans the open world will provide some more single player content than usual.

I was already 100% sold on the Switch 2 + MKW bundle before the presentation, but if I was skeptical of the price, I'm not sure this Direct would have done anything to change my mind.

I will say that even though it's only $30, the value difference between the $500 bundle and buying a $450 Switch 2 and $80 Mario Kart World feels profound.

This ain't it

Diddy Kong did it better decades ago
Meh. If I could have Diddy Kongy Racing or MK World. I'd rather have MK World. It looks to be doing way more things mechanically and socially and the "hundreds" of missions and collectibles easily make up for DKR's extra balloon collectibles etc.

Not saying DKR wasn't great for its time or even still good today, but MK World is easily light years ahead in terms of what's it's doing in size, scope, and scale.

I reserved my final opinion about that whole fiasco until that Direct because there was still the possibility that they really were hiding some very creative feature or concept that'd somehow justify the baffling pricepoint and overall game design of this new Mario Kart but after watching it I think they've lost the plot.

The open world seems absolutely pointless and the gameplay scenarios they've shown to illustrate what you're supposed to do in it are exactly what I thought the worst possibility would be: basic blue coins collecting and micro racing challenges, probably copypasted all over the map. Hard pass.

The griding on rails seems pretty pointless to me.
The tricks are potentially the best thing they showed. Looks like it'll increase the skill ceiling if you want to play this at a higher level, optimizing each track with more involved tricks, alternate paths on walls, railings and obstacles with each giving a tiny speed boost. It's designed to be an optional thing so its mostly balanced if you ignore it, but high skill players will be able to use this throughout the race to increase the complexity a little bit.

Only $50 in the bundle.

So, again. The communication is awful! Lots of questions that shouldn't exist.

It is Mario Kart, no more, no less! It is Mario Kart. Nintendo didn't reinvent the wheel but it looks good!

Whoever is in charge of Nintendo Direct communication needs to be fired. I am sorry, but it is true. NS1 direct was bad, NS2 reveal was bad, confusing; Mario kart direct was bad.

It is also apparent that either Nintendo is scared to death about NS2 and are playing it safe; or
they are having software development problems again. Both of which could easily be true.

IMO, Nintnedo should show the E3/summer Direct right before NS2 launch.

As of now, you can almost guarantee NS2 will be easily findable on store shelves by Jan 2026. This feels very Wii U / 3ds. (And i bought both of those at launch).

Y'all really need to work on actually watching the videos, when they're showing the Battle Mode they're clearly playing in dedicated Battle Arenas. You can even see little mini maps of the arena, one is like a square one with multiple levels and another is a circular lava one you can jump across.

And this is the most disappointing part. Now I'll never say it'll never happen.

But should be a proper battle made planned. It's wide open for it with the open world format.

Ok, so a few things...

1- Is it just me, my TV or is there a weird washed out look in this game? Not at all times, but something seems off. Colors aren't nearly as vibrant as i expected, hell, 8 is more colorful. Same with night time in this footage but also last time, raised black levels, perhaps HDR issue? Since the game will have HDR?

2- So the big new thing basically is......open world?

3- When they show the game chat you see the users down below taking up screen space, not great. But surely you can hide this, right?
