Which one of these characters are made by Sony? Hell they don't even own the studio that made the game, their role in this game's existence is like the husband who sits on the chair and watched the pool boy smash his wife, so I guess it is Sony's Smash.
You seem to be framing that in a really specific way outside of what the person was claiming.
- Are all of the characters in Smash Nintendo characters? The answer is no.
- So when Sony undoubtedly buys Arc system Works, will that make this game Sony's smash? They're publishing the game, it's their game.
- XDEV Japan and various Sony studios are assisting in the development of this game, not to mention again they're the publisher here.
I can tell that you feel threatened in a console war type way about the statement Sportler made, but it's an accurate one.
Dragon Ball FighterZ sold over 10 million copies and is one of the most successful fighting games of all time. Dragon Ball is a popular IP, especially in the fighting game genre, but Marvel is still a much larger IP with a much better (more relevant) roster of characters. If DBFZ sold 10 million copies, it stands to reason that MTFS could sell
easily sell 15-20 million if not more.
The question is whether that makes it Sony's Smash and if that was the only case, I'd probably say no. What makes it Sony's Smash is the DLC capabilities and crossovers. Outside of Smash Bros Ultimate, none of the games sold more than 14 million units, so unless future games in the series can deliver Ultimate numbers consistently, I'd say 15-20 million is still quite fair to compare to Smash on the basis of sales.
Going further though, when you look at general revenue I could easily see a My Hero Academia crossover DLC, which would generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue by itself. I could see the incorporation of several Sony characters over time.
This game could easily become an officially licensed mugen in a way we haven't really seen on a large scale in a game like this outside of games like Smash, Multiversus, Nickelodeon Small Brawl...
To be "Sony's Smash" I don't think it even needs to be a fighting game, but it's curious you didn't focus on it not being the same style of fighting game, which would have been more on target, but probably just as superfluous. Another comparison would be Fortnite, though I doubt this game hits the scale of that obviously.
